Anybody who has been to Oz aroud this time of year will have come across and probably gotten caught up in the NRL's State of Origin series. For those who have not ye are missing out. It is probably the closest thing the Aussies have to an All Ireland series. I know that the rivalry is intense in the AFL but this is proper representative footy with team mate v's team mate biffing it out to win the three match series for their state of origin either New South Wales or Queensland. The atmosphere is electric especially in the Suncorp stadium and it attracts full houses when played in Melbourne or Sydney. It was also the series which got me into league and now I have to say it would be my preference over union. Maybe not super league but def NRL.

Anyway the reason I am posting this tread is to find out if there is anybody out there who thinks it is after getting a bit stale what with the Maroonswinning it again this year to make it four in a row. Is there anything that can be done to liven it up a little such as allowing players born outside of either state but playing in one of the other states to play for them. I'm talking about Kiwi's and Islanders here and not those born on the mainland. It's just a question and one I am sure most people are not that interested in. A bit like this thread really i suppose.

Rugby Lite is a terrible sport.

Going by the European game you would be right for sure but watch the southern hemisphere version and you could be swayed. But then again maybe not.  ;D

No rucks ,no mauls, no scrums and no line outs. Doesn't really appeal to the forward in me  ;)

They have some pretty tasty cheerleaders, something the old kick and run game is sorely lacking.

Isn't league the kick and run game? Also I would put it too you that if the product on pitch is entertaining and exciting there is no need for cheerleaders .

No, League is run and tackle and on the fifth (or fourth sometimes) the team in possession usually lobs a "bomb" into the corner.  I'm a  Qld supporter purely for the fact that I used to work with obnoxious little, spoilt wankers from Sydney who wouldn't know their arse from their elbow but suddenly became NRL experts at SoO time.  At that time, too, NSW were pasting the maroons.  I then moved to work in Qld and that's when they started on their record-breaking run.

If you ever get a chance to see a man in action, type Wally Lewis into You Tube.  Enjoy

So that's a yes then . It's the code where if you don't kick it you have to hand the ball over too the other team .

There is a hell of a lot more kicking in union these days

That was a result of those stupid ELV's. The IRB just had to fix what wasn't broken.

True but of all the things to criticise league for i wouldn't use kicking, it is used as a last resort, in union these days it is used as a primary weapon!

True the man was and still is a legend. I remember when he went in for brain surgery in 2007. The aussie public and media were treating it like the prime minister or somebody of that importance had taking ill such is the esteem in which he is held. He was one of the main reasons SoO took off in the 80's. Joey Johns would be another one I would put up there. I was sickened when he pulled out of the 07 SoO as I paid $130 just for the privilege of seeing his kicking. I did get to see him playing for Newcastle in the finals that year though at Aussie Stadium. He was brutal that game and Newcastle lost badly. Ah well I was just happy to have seen him play.
