I have to admit, I'm incredibly jealous of the restaurant iPad brigade. They get to eat their dinner in something resembling peace and quiet.

QuoteYouTube is fine to a degree but our wee one doesn't ask...she knows what she likes on. Netflix and Disney and rolls with that. She likes TV but would play most of the time around it being on rather than sitting watching it...unless it's Strictly and she's glued!  Loves Bluey,  loves K-pop,  loves all the Halloweenee stuff.

Luckily she is coming 6 and has no interest in iPads. If we go out we try to bring colouring books as she loves drawing rather than sticking on the screen. Would be a hypocrite to say we haven't done it but most of the time we don't. Was out for tea a few weeks ago and there was a party of 8-9 with 3-4 kids under 7-8. Each kid had their own iPad and watched it the whole way through the meal. Not judging,  just observing

 ;D

I remember when we were away with our 4 about 9 years ago when our oldest was 8, at breakfast time in the hotel in the mornings ours were the only kids with no devices.  Plus when we had them in Creche you seen parents pulling up in the morning and the ipad would have been strapped to the back of the driver seat, it is not as if their house was 20 miles from the Creche.
Some parents really  have a lot to answer for.  If they've never grown up with screens , they'll never miss them (until a certain  age anyway).

At times , I've had to keep an eye on the nephews for an hour , and they get  screens a lot. I know it's easy  when  you're not dealing with them 24/7 , but the last few times  we've had them , they've taken great craic  making paper aeroplanes ,  colouring in and  when they get a bit loud , let's see who can keep quiet the longest. Surprisingly, they've taken to that one! It's  bliss!

"Silence in the courtyard, silence in the street,
the biggest mouth in Ireland is just about to speak!"

Works a treat still even if my crew are getting a old for it at 9yo's..

If any of you coach underage, fundamentals groups you'll know that the sedentary lifestyle in kids is becoming a problem in terms of running, jumping, basic motor skills, coordination etc, a lot of them just don't do it so when they rock up to training you are really starting from a low level on all fronts.

The best kids at those levels are the ones who are let off the leash a bit by their parents, farmers or builders kids and even the ones whose parents are a bit modern and don't discipline at all.
Once they know if they mess with another kid and that kid is going to hit back they get the message sharpish enough.

I've started to allow a bit of rough and tumble (within reason) and any kid who rolls about the ground is quickly told to get up and play on.

Quote from: lurganblue on October 20, 2025, 04:09:39 PM6 7 is the big one at the minute.  Tiktok again.  Something to do with someone shouting it at basketball, or someone's height... or some other nonsense.

Just back from holidays where kids were randomly shouting 6-7 and others were replying. Kids who didn't know each other from different countries all cheering when they heard it. Seemed harmless, if a bit annoying.
