Was the waterford victory over a highly fancied Tipp team not a bit of a shock down Munster way?

It was but with Tipp being so successful at minor level recently- I think they worry more about all-irelands at this stage. But Waterford are a hell of a good side this year.

It was a huge surprise as Tipp were 1/7 with the bookmakers. Looks like the Tipp players believed their own publicity as they were well beaten.  Tipp Under 21's were also the hottest of favourites against Waterford last Wednesday and lost by 10 points.  A bad week for Tipp's under age hurlers, particularly the Under 21's  who were Minor All Ireland winners in 2006 and were favourites to win the All Ireland.

I was thunderstruck by how good Waterford looked against Tipperary in the Munster final. They were better throughout the game and in every area of the pitch, and the late goal Tipp really flattered them. However, Tipp might well have been caught on the hop. The bookeis will have been following the money and it's rare enough that you'd back anyone other than Kilkenny, Cork, Tipp or Galway for minor success.

Minor stuff can be unpredictable, so who knows what comes next.

Deiseach, a question, and a pleasant one at that. De La Salle All Ireland Winners at Colleges level 07 and 08. Waterford Munster minor champions 09, after playing a few games too, a chance of being Munster Under 21 winners this year after a great performance against Tipp last week. Now that must be around 40 lads between 18 and 21 in Waterford that know what it's like to win at the highest level in their age bracket. When was this ever seen before, never I'd say is the answer.

Looks like a lot of good work going on down Deise way and they need to kick on/keep it up etc. Has to, very soon, pay dividends at Senior level.

No guarantee at all of senior success unfortunately as we only know to well in Galway. How many minor and U-21 All- Ireland's did we win and we are still 21 years waiting for a senior All-Ireland title.

That said you'd prefer to be winning underage titles than getting beat every year.

Not only that, Waterford won the Tony Forristal tournament for the first time last year, which is the de facto Under-14 All-Ireland. We have had it before in a way, we won both underage Munster titles in 1992. It took a while for that to translate into a competive Senior team, and there'll always be a twinge of regret that the Clare team we beat in 1992 would go on to form the backbone of their All-Ireland winning teams while in 1993 we were losing to Kerry and killing each other AGAIN over who was to blame for the Under-21's losing to Limerick. But if the current underage teams can produce players of the quality of Paul Flynn, Fergal Hartley and Tony Browne, we'll be competitive for a good few years yet.
