Is Sky HD worth it?

Sky HD? I haven't had a clear RTE picture in 9 years. I'd like to get RTE first.

I can't tell the difference between HD and standard def Tv to be honest..

There is a huge difference to be fair.  When watching a match on SS1 and you then change to HD1 , it's a noticeable change in quality.  If you then change BACK to SS1, after seeing it in HD, the difference is startling.

What type of TV do you have?
I never noticed before on my TV that I have a screen setting called "exact scan" which is only available when watching a HD source.
I might even fork out and rent(for a change) a decent movie to see what it looks like.

There's a box coming up shortly that converts the Irish MP4 into the UK MP2 soon. I've a man testing it out for me, so I should know in a few weeks.

I don't have HD myself, but have seen it in my parents house.  They have a 48", Panasonic I think.  Yeah the blue-ray dvds are pretty impressive.

You have to understand where Sky get all of of their HD stuff from. Alot of it is just passed into a up scaler to add the extra lines. The problem with this is you can't add quality when the quality doesn't exist in the original . In fact up scaling from a poor source can lead to increasing artefacts in the picture. BBC are only showing true HD that being stuff that was recorded in HD or the original print was good enough to be remastered in HD . You can see the difference in Sport of Sky very clearly .

Our eyes can only pick out things of a certain size so can you see much difference in the picture when you are sitting 10ft from the tv?  The polar bears on the nature programs I watch look fine to me without having them in HD.

It's not about size its about detail , so while you see a polar bear people with HD can see every detail , separate hairs , difference in the snow etc. Its much more real.

two music channels and a couple of other crap ones

If i buy a freesat box will i get

itv 4
bbc 4
film4 etc
or do i need to adjust my sat as i get no radio stations
