He can be ordained in another diocese surely?

Yes, assuming they'll take him and assuming he's recommended to them by the bosses in the seminary and the boss in Derry and Raphoe ( the gentleman who graced the airwaves on the occasion of the abusive priest in Dungiven, the lifting of the money to pay off victims of clerical abuse who famously told the reporter that he'd tell his parishioners as he saw fit when asked why he didn't tell the people that the collection was specifically for the above purpose ).

I don't mind him, don't think its any reason to PM you though.

Dont know why you replied but if he wants to discuss the details off the thread then I offered.

Ah no Abbey I was only winding, just because your sentence read "PM me if you like southoftheborder", I was trying to be funny, but failed miserably  :-\
"If you want to box, say you want to box and we'll box"

I find it hard to believe too. Sure they ordain all sorts of unsuitable cretins without difficulty. In fact I'd say it would be next to impossible to not get ordained after doing your stint in Maynooth. Did your friend piss off the bishop in some other way and the bishop used the excuse of a tattoo to get back at him?
If I were you I'd tell your friend he can do more good in the world as a lay person anyway. Look on the bright side.

I would believe this story.

My first cousin went straight from Leaving Cert and into the seminary in Maynooth. He wanted to join the missions more than anything.
However after 7 years studying to be a priest he was told that he was probably too young to join the priesthood and there was a fear that he would have a problem with the vows like celibacy.

He was completely devastated. He had devoted 7 years of his life only to be told he couldnt get ordained. However he left and joined the department of foreign affairs and was working in Africa for a number of years.

Looking back now he would say that it was the best thing that ever happened him. He got to go to Africa after that and is happily married now.

Its amazing how conservative they can be.

PM me if you like southoftheborder, I can understand what its like.

So in other words the church was dead right.

i have a nephew who was to be ordained at the end of the month, however after 7years of training apparently they have told him that the bishop will not ordain him as he has tattoo of a crucifix, surely after 7years of devotion this is absurd, i know the bible states that we should not harm our body, but the bible is a guide, not a rule book

anyones thoughts or comments are appreciated

Find this hard to believe. Which Bishop is it?

Bishop Brennan? ;)

Seriously though, it sounds like it could be out of a Father Ted script:

Father Dougal McGuire: God Ted, I've heard about those cults. Everyone dressing in black and saying our Lord's going to come back and judge us all.
Father Ted Crilly: No... no Dougal, that's us. That's Catholicism you're talking about there.
I'm gonna punch you in the ovary, that's what I'm gonna do. A straight shot. Right to the babymaker.

Bishop Brennan? ;)

Bishop Brennan is alive and well in the Diocese of Ferns and like his televisual namesake, needs a good boot up the hole.
