I got my placement many moons ago in the Drinks Industry - I worked for Bass Ireland and my housemate actually worked for Guinness at the time too.
Try them.
Consider going abroad too - there are a lot of opportunities overseas for placement students and it is great experience.
I am sure your careers dept and studies advisor should be able to point you in the right direction at this stage.
I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight

OTB get it organised as soon as you can, I'm starting on placement (in pharmaceutical industry) in June and we thought the whole class had places sorted and all, a few people were still waiting for their contracts but eventually got them; my friend had her interview way before Christmas and she got a place in Solvay Fornier in Carrigtwohill and that was grand, she kept on at them about her contract then she got a phonecall last week to tell her that they can't take her...as if she isn't already stressed out enough from exams and having to pick final year research projects she now has to try and find somewhere that will take her and to be honest I don't know if she will get anywhere cus the last few to be placed from our class had a hard time getting somewhere I feel so sorry for her...just hoping the same thing doesn't happen to me!!  :-\ :-\

Anyway, moral of the story is look early, once you get a place demand the contract asap and possibly have backups!!

Good luck!

Im searching for placement as well in the Multimedia/Wed Design area and cant seem to find anything. A lot of my classmates have decided to cut their losses and accept an unpaid placement for 2 or 3 days a week rather than be left without one and sent into final year miles behind those who are coming back from a year in a job.

I know of a few people who got accepted for intel and even signed a contract for a house next year, only for intel to get back to them and say they cannot take them on.

Can anyone help?

Where are you looking work ?

You won't be 'miles behind' going into final year so don't worry. Quite a few people don't do placement year (supersarsfields done one and failed it mysteriously!) Although obviously some of your classmates will have gained skills that will be useful in final year. You'll notice the main advantages of a good placement year with plenty of experience when you're finished and applying for jobs.

If you don't get a multimedia/web design related placement, try and get a placement in another IT area. It'll still look good on the CV.

If you end up getting a crap placement or working in asda for the year, there's one obvious thing for you to do; start designing websites for people. You'll earn a bit of cash and start putting together a portfolio to show off when you graduate.

From the 2nd years on my course last year only about 4 or 5 people from a class of near 100 didnt do placement and went to final year. There have been plenty of occasions i've seen this 4 or 5 people sitting all day and all night working away in the labs. Considerably more than the rest of the final years.

It is likely to be more than 4 or 5% this year. With companies in all sectors trimming costs and people, I would say paying for a student placement year will be well down the list of priorities this year.

Just talking about paying for student placements, one of my friends is going to Merck Sharp and Dhome in Clonmel for the Summer and she is getting something ridiculous like €12 an hour!!!  Ah I'm only jealous lol  But MSD must be doing ok if they can afford to pay her that much!
