Title: Follow Meath Up To Carlow (Reprise)
Post by: thejuice on May 28, 2012, 05:04:26 PM
Yes, the game is not in Carlow. The last on was. But anyway.

If we are to get to Croker we'll need to go through 15 traffic lights. No matter whether they'll be red, yella or green Banty's not a man for stoppin.

Bull on there Banty, ye boya.

All Leinster Championship games are played a neutral venue expect if your county is Dublin because seemingly Portlaoise isn't big enough to host the 5K odd traveling fans from Dublin.

I hear caomhin king has left the panel due to a falling out with the bantysaurus. We can't really afford to be losing lads who aren't injured. Especially lads like king who have been good players and have a bit of big game experience.

Na, honest Chuck McCreevey had more to do with the club houses and pitches than the Leinster Council, I think at one stage Naas GAA got €700,000 ffs.

Well, if there is a silver lining with all these injuries it is that there's no option but to blood new young players.
Keoghan, Forde and Tobin have done well after being given their chance.
By his own standards Seamus wasn't having a good season.
Gutted for him though as he's been such a warrior for us.
Last year he was outstanding.
Hope he can get back from this.

Stephen Bray is back fit and hopefully will start. I imagine Farrell might keep his place and Carroll dropped although Banty might leave Cian Ward off instead.

Likely line-up:

D Gallagher

M Burke, K Reilly, S McAnarney,
D Tobin, B Menton, D Keoghan,

C Gillespie, B Meade,

A Forde, Stephen Bray, G Reilly,
Brian Farrell, Big Joe, Cian Ward,

Team named:

Quote
D Gallagher;

D Keoghan, K Reilly, B Menton;
D Tobin, S McAnarney, M Burke;

C Gillespie, B Meade;

A Forde, S Bray, G Reilly;
B Farrell, J Sheridan, C Ward.

Pretty much the team I picked.

I guess Banty switched Menton and McAnarney just to make it look like it was his idea.

McAnerney struggled at corner back and with King off the panel I guess Banty’s hand was forced. I guess Cormac McGill hasn’t returned this year either.

He was top class, scored 2-5, and still available for  - told me  he's not harbouring any hopes for a call up - gone on holiday tomorrow anyway.

Banty could do worse than patching up whatever the issue with Moyles is, quality experienced players like him don't grow on trees.

I dont know why people are still talking about Cormac McGill - has hardly stood out for Donaghmore/Ashbourne recently and hasn't kicked a ball for Meath in 3 or 4 years. Eoin Harrington, Chris O'Connor, Seanie Curran, Gary O'Brien and Ciaran Lenehan all involved - so don't think Banty's hand was forced. Mickey Burke and Donal Keoghan are also comfortable in the corner.

It's a good team. I was wondering how Banty would re-jig his 2-2-2 formation in the forwards. Looks like it'll be Bray and Ward on the forty and Farrell and Joe inside. Meade and Forde on the wings with Graham Reilly midfield again. Paddy Gilsenan must still have a hamstring problem and it's disappointing for Mark Collins. .

Gutted for Meath. They looked to have it sealed but as so often happens a little bit of inexperience and they paid the price. Hard to think they'll get a better chance to make a Leinster semi-final. Now they're up against it - traditionally, Carlow just don't do second chances.

Still, at least it's another day out for the Royals...

What was the comment Hardy?

This performance was a joke but full credit to carlow they kept at it. We gave away possession too easily in the forwards. Farrell was the only one of the forwards to really get the better of his man. Ward got some good scores but his distribution from good positions at key moments was at time awful. We were best served by K. Reilly, Tobin, G. Reilly, Ward & Farrell. Graham Reilly worked his socks off and is back to his best.

Keoghan showed terrible naivety in giving the ball away that lead to the goal at the end. Gilsenan showed great for balls but missed 3 easy enough chances. Joe was almost anonomous and doesnt look sharp. Gallagher made a poor error that resulted in the goal. I dont think he is the best option there, his kickouts had no variation and we lost the vast majority of them. Queeny did well when he came on and has to start ahead of Forde the next day.

Seriously though, what would you have them do?

It s not just in Meath. A lot of people with a lot to offer don t get involved in clubs etc throughout the country because they couldn t suffer the gombeens running the show. People have better things to do than get involved in squabbling and messing.

Who do ye Meath boys think ye are??? Do ye not realise how far ye have fallen? Carlow deserve more credit for today's performance than any of you are giving. Ye have no right to hammer Carlow out the gate. If Carlow had a decent Manager they would due in Div 2 by now! Lot of talent knocking around just need ing some good coaching and management.
Carlow have suffered three big losses today though - St Ledger injured, Reid and Hayden suspended; little on the bench to make a difference but of Luke was prepared to draft in reinforcements..... Carlow could ask more questions of Meath.
Now having said all that Meath were through on goal on at least three occasions and opted to fist over the bar, hitting the posts twice in the first half.
Strange for Meath to arrive at the grounds just 15 mins beforehand....don't think it's such a good idea plus Tullamore club grounds are just across the road and are ideal...

All very funny of course, but I'm beginning to believe there's some kind of sabotage happening here. First we arrive late, then we play badly, and after conceding a last minute goal, Banty says he's "absolutely delighted with the result". Not one bit happy with this penguin in charge.

That's the thing. Get the likes of O'Rourke, Hayes etc running the show and send the gombeen men on their way. An alternative county board needs to be assembled and voted into place.

RE:Give and Go,
I don't know what forum you're reading perhaps its just a knee jerk reaction of yours to assume arrogance on our part. If we didn't realise how far we have fallen we wouldn't be asking for wholesale changes of the county board. We are fully aware that we are not as good as Dublin or Kildare these days and yesterdays result is not a surprise but it is depressing.

[Paraphrasing] 'I hope he has his helicopter ready' (in Carlow, I presume he meant). 'There'll probably be another attempt to get rid of him this week.'

He didn't take the opportunity to comment on the situation at all and didn't come across as distressed at the situation we've descended into or interested in offering an opinion on how to get out of it. It may not have been the time or place, but if he had ideas about getting involved in sorting out the mess I doubt if he’d have been as flippant as he came across.

As a Longford man not in a position to gloat but fact that Meath supporters around me roaring for Carlow lads to be sent off after any tackle from middle of second half onwards show how far Meath have fallen, would never have needed a numerical advantage to beat a Division 4 team....

Also the manager has to make the final call and decisions, was positioned beside the Meath dugout and every decision had to go threw a committee incl McElkinnon, Geraghty, Giles, Evans....surley manager consults maybe one, two voices and then makes the call.....too many cooks and all that....

Meath ratings in the Indo have to be seen to be believed:
Meath -- D Gallagher 7; D Keogan 7, K Reilly 7, B Menton 7; D Tobin 7, S McAnarney 7, M Burke 7; C Gillespie 7, B Meade 7; A Forde 7, P Gilsenan 7, G Reilly 7; B Farrell 7, J Sheridan 7, C Ward 7. Subs: J Queeney 7 for A Forde (44); M Collins 7 for P Gilsenan (50).

Everyone on a 7!

How he can give Graham Reilly the same rating as McAnarney, Gillespie, Sheridan & Gallagher and still be considered a sports journalist beats me. I seriously doubt that the journalist in question atttended the game.

My ratings would be
Meath -- D Gallagher 5; D Keogan 6, K Reilly 8, B Menton 7; D Tobin 7, S McAnarney 5, M Burke 5; C Gillespie 4, B Meade 7; A Forde 5, P Gilsenan 6, G Reilly 8; B Farrell 7, J Sheridan 4, C Ward 7. Subs: J Queeney 7 for A Forde (44); M Collins 6 for P Gilsenan (50).

Team arriving 15 minutes before the game having warmed up elsewhere. Didn't Colm Coyle do that the time Limerick hammered us. A strange approach to take.

I initially thought a production error only Carlow had a range of scores. However he gave Paul Reid & Derek Hayden (the 2 guys sent off & Hayden was a sub) also a 7.

Also, the following is his description of the carlow goal.....
But somehow -- from the depths of their being -- Carlow dredged up one more assault on the Royals goal and in a glorious move, Nolan found substitute Keith Jackson with a precise pass, and he transferred it to Smith, who smashed the ball into the Meath net.

Even if Liam Kely had watched the Sunday Game highlights he could have seen that this was rubbish. It kinda makes you wonder what is the poin in getting a newspaper for reports on the matches at all.

O’Rourke fills goalie gap but rules out Royal return
By Terry Reilly
Wednesday, June 13, 2012
They may have dusted Graham Geraghty’s boots off last summer but Colm O’Rourke’s comeback won’t stretch any further than a one off club game.
The 54-year old Royal legend and respected TV pundit caused quite a stir when he returned to playing duty on Monday night in Meath.

He is involved as a selector with Simonstown Gaels’ junior C team who had only 13 players for a Division 3B league away fixture against St Ultan’s. Having made the journey it was decided to draft two selectors into action, O’Rourke, who played in goals, and Ollie Boland, who lined out at corner-forward.

But O’Rourke, father of Meath panellist Shane, won’t be repeating the outing.

"No, there’ll be no glorious comeback," smiled Simonstown club secretary and former Meath county board official Barry Gorman.

"It was a bit of a novelty more than anything else. A lot of the lads had travelled a fair distance to get to the game and instead of telling them to turn around go home they stuck Colm in goals.

"He pulled off one great save in fairness to him. But he let two goals in and I’d imagine he took a bit of ribbing for that."

O’Rourke is unlikely to put it up there with his All-Ireland winning heroics of 1987 and 1988 but the club did at least win their match 3-14 to 2-11.

Some of Meath's more experienced players need to shape up in my opinion. I'd like to say my piece about a few.

Kevin Reilly - Yes good full-back when left on edge of square but vulnerable when taken away from it - a weakness Carlow clearly sought to exploit last Sunday. The large number of frees he concedes usually goes ignored, plus has a propensity to try and nip everything in front of his man possibly due to fear of been taken on.

Graham Reilly - A fine footballer but one who has no aspiration to track back and tackle. A tactic used by Meath on Sunday was to leave Reilly's man free for Carlow kickouts so that Reilly could contest breaks. He rarely at any stage showed any enthusiasm for this. The supporters are blinded by his occasional dashing runs through defences.

Joe Sheridan - Vastly over-rated and always has been. He completely upsets the beat of this Meath team but continually standing still inside the '45 with his finger held high in the air. Farrell must find it hard to play alongside him - only one of them is interested in moving. He should never have been brought from America.

David Gallagher, Shane McAnarney, Mickey Burke, Brian Meade, Cian Ward and Brian Farrell have all mixed the good and the bad quite regularly over the last number of games.

I would not agree with that - a back should always stay between his man and the goal. If Reilly wants to commit himself the way he does, then he must get the ball. Usually though he finds himself having to drag his man down or else looking at him running into the distance. Only an observation I had.

It's an interesting perspective, but as a full back, I would never have received coaching as such. The message always was "Get out in front", first and foremost, and if you can't the other element of full back play comes in : harry, tackle, block, stay goalside. Perhaps there is another approach in other counties?

I would not have a problem with a back being out in front - provided he's not going to be turned around running after his man five seconds later. My problem with Reilly is that he can be reckless - diving in trying to get a hand to a ball and not getting there. It's a risk he takes too often without the required results. He's especially liable to do this when he's forced to mark a player who likes to run on to the ball. He would be better advised to shadow (basketball style) and let the forward give a handpass - at which point the next defender lines up to shadow.

Ah i have to say i do have a bit of an obsession with Kildare. Hopefully this year, they can turn the corner and shut me up as i hold no malice toward them (Team or Fans), more the media who constantly put them on a pedistal they do not yet deserve to be on. Anyway best of Luck v Meath (now there's an Obsession and Malice  :P).

Meath upped it big time once they realised Carlow were not going to be a pushover.
Couple of things strike me about Meath:

Belief and self confidence at an all time low. Players playing with doubt. Excellent forwards, some very mobile backs, midfield not strong enough although Peadar Byrne added bite .
Too many waiting for this year to finish instead of getting on with it as it is.

Meath can go further but negativity holding team back.

Good win last night. It's nice to see Farrell back on form this year. He can kick some lovely scores when on form. Still tough to see Meath beating kildare but the fact that they will have 3 matches under their belt compared to 1 for kildare could stand to them. Is it due to be a double header in croker with the other semi?

Yeah but I guess the demand for tickets isn’t as high anymore given the opposition and the damp squib Leinster has become. Although I’d say the Dubs would probably be more keen to go see us get beat by Carlow than seeing themselves hammer Louth.

This one will have three sets of fans against us so it’s going to be an intimidating atmosphere for our young lads.

Delighted for them and good to see the ban upheld. Poacher is a scar on the game.

Meath will need to be patient like Dublin 2 years ago and unlike Kildare last year. If you try to force it Carlow's defensive system will gobble up loose ball and hit you on the break, Broderick is their go to man.  The loss of the sideline and Poachers mouthing will be a factor and Brendan Murphy will be hard to replace, so I don't give them any chance. Most neutral's would sooner Meath go through than Carlow, Meath play a nicer brand of football and the chip on the shoulder #carlowrising has become very tiresome.

Carlow were without Murphy last year against Kildare and I’m sure they’ll have been prepared for the suspensions anyway. If Carlow play that way again they’ll cause us problems unless we can find something extra. I think perhaps our bench will get us through this one as well but it’s by no means as clear cut as the bookies have it.

Meath (Leinster SFC v Carlow):
Andrew Colgan;

Seamus Lavin,
Conor McGill,
Shane Gallagher;

James McEntee,
Donal Keogan,
Gavin McCoy;

Bryan Menton,
Adam Flanagan;

Cillian O'Sullivan,
Bryan McMahon,
Ben Brennan;

Barry Dardis,
Michael Newman,
Thomas O'Reilly.

Subs: Marcus Brennan, Ronan Ryan, James Conlon, Eoin Lynch, Padraic Harnan, Ethan Devine, Sean Tobin, Graham Reilly, Sean Curran, Darragh Campion, Thomas McGovern.

Same again but Flanagan replacing the injured Shane McEntee. I’d probably have left Dardis off as he wasn’t influential enough against Offaly but it seems Andy has found his formula and is sticking to it. Good that James McEntee is fit for this one but he needs to put in some hard work today which was absent the last day.
