God that was some mess in Duisburg, Germany. Think 19 people confirmed dead. Knew about 25 people who went over for a 30th party. Absolute chaos and its a wonder more were not killed or injured. I believe they had one exit for all people, and they expected around 1.4 Million people. WTF were the organisers thinking.

Brazilian host investigated over TV killings

A crime TV show host is under investigation by Brazilian police for allegedly ordering killings to boost his show's popularity.

A politician who hosted a crime TV show with graphic footage of murder victims is under investigation by Brazilian police for allegedly ordering killings to boost his show's popularity.

Police confirmed they are investigating Wallace Souza and his son after claims that at least five killings were ordered to boost his ratings.

Detectives became suspicious when his television crews often seemed to be the first at the scene of the crime.

State police intelligence chief Thomaz Vasconcelos said the alleged crimes appeared to have served the Souzas in two ways; 'they eliminated drug-trafficking rivals, and they boosted ratings'.

Wallace Souza's lawyer, Francisco Balieiro, said his client vehemently denied the accusations and accused political opponents of trying to disgrace him with false accusations.

Mr Souza became a media personality after a career as a police officer that ended in disgrace.

He started 'Canal Livre' in the 1990s on a local station in Manaus, the capital of Brazil's Amazonas state.

It became extremely popular among the 1.7m residents of Manaus before going off the air late last year as police intensified their investigation.

The show featured Mr Souza, in a studio, railing against rampant crime in the state, punctuated with often exclusive footage of arrests, crime scenes and drug seizures.

General discussion / The Chagos Islands- Shame on Britain
« on: August 09, 2009, 11:03:48 AM »
Just seen a documentary on these set of islands in the Indian Ocean which the British agreed with the US to be used as a military base around the time of the Cold War.The agreement which was not signed by the British parliament, but rather signed by Her Royal Highness stated that the main island Diego Garcia which would be used as the main base had NO inhabitants only a few contract workers. In fact it had at least 2000 native people who had been living there for a few generations. In 1971 when the US forces arrived to set up base all the inhabitants were made leave their native island and move 1500 miles away to Mauritius. The Chagossian people are still fighting for their right to return to the island.
