General discussion / No Country for Women - RTE1
« on: June 20, 2018, 09:06:28 AM »
Anyone watch the first part of this last night? Pretty depressing and sad stuff. Shameful really what our State in the Republic has done to half of it's population and the reasoning behind it. Another potent example of the total betrayal of the brave men and women of 1916-1922 and their ideals. If we heard of this kind of stuff happening in a muslim country we'd be outraged yet this was happening up to the 90's here. And on some levels it still is happening here.

General discussion / London trip - guidance needed
« on: March 05, 2018, 03:46:09 PM »
Heading over for the Sligo match in May and in need of a stern on decent bars where we'll not get the heads annoyed off us by bad drink, loud and shite music etc. This is kind of a reunion for the trip we made 20 years ago and in the interim our knowledge of the London scene has evaporated. It appears places we used to go to like the Claddagh Ring have gone a bit posh in that time so might not be suitable. Ideal spot would be somewhere Irish old timers would drink. Don't mind the appearance so long as the drink is good and we'll be able to talk a bit of shite and have the craic. Crucially this is for the night of the game (Sunday) and we don't want to be chucked out at 10.30.....need a good late spot. Location not really a concern....we'll travel for the right spot.

General discussion / Gaelic Voices for Change - Dec 16th sleep out
« on: December 05, 2017, 03:46:20 PM »
Surprised this has not been mentioned here yet. I'm very proud of our GAA players for taking a leadership position and placing the focus firmly on the issue of homelessness. We need this horrible stain on our society to be ended. follow the group on twitter/FB and do what you can to help.

General discussion / Concert tickets
« on: May 08, 2017, 12:42:02 PM »
I'm sure this has been discussed here before but I can't find any thread that deals with it.

When you buy concert tickets and print them off - what's to stop you reprinting them. Say for example you sell a ticket to someone what's to stop you reprinting and going yourself/selling again? I suppose Ticketmaster have your details, including credit card, is that it?

General discussion / Atlantic - documentary
« on: December 09, 2016, 12:28:05 PM »
Finally got to watch this excellent documentary in its entirety last night on RTE1 last night (if you haven't seen it, do yourself a favour and watch it on the RTE player). Despite the fact that not a lot of the content relating to Ireland was new to me I was still tremendously angry after watching it and still am. Frankly anyone who thinks there's a justification for voting for FF or FG needs to watch this. Similarly, fans of the three card trick that is the EU need to think about this when evaluating "all the good" membership of that cabal has done us.

I hope people like AZ can understand why I'm so angry at our country and what a f*cked up mess it is. I deeply love our country and the greatness we should be reaching for. That's why I can't stand for the shittiness that we have to make do with and swallow all the time.

The bottom line is this - not only do FF and FG (and Labour since the 80's) not care about ordinary people, they actually despise us. I truly believe that. Yes, there are some lower level politicians who are "well intentioned"  ::) idiot sheep but I'm not giving them a pass for being stupid. Look what's happening all around us. People say "what's the alternative" which saddens me. That's a conditioned groupthink response, the one fed to us by O'Reilly and to a lesser extent the state broadcaster (I can't believe they were allowed show this documentary last night). Failing and repeating the same process is the definition of stupidity.

General discussion / Savings Accounts
« on: January 15, 2016, 02:49:09 PM »
There was an old thread with only two posts on it on this topic but I thought I'd start a new one.

Any advice on the best ideas for putting a few quid away. I see Rabobank have a savings account which pays 1.25% on amounts up to €50,000 which looks the best to me. Anyone any suggestions? There's no reason to worry about the credit rating of the bank is there (it's ok, but only ok)?

GAA Discussion / Managers - "outside" versus "inside"
« on: February 24, 2015, 11:30:21 AM »
Was having a chat the other evening with a good friend of mine and he brought up something that Sligo surely has a record that cannot be beaten in. Since 1993 the Sligo senior football team has been managed by Sligo natives a total of only 2.5 years. James Kearins in 2004 I think (which ended with the Tommy Murphy Cup debacle), Tommy Breheny in 2007 (which ended with the Nestor Cup  ;D ) and Breheny did another half a year after the Dom Corrigan "white van sacking."

Can any other county match that record for supporting outside managers?

GAA Discussion / Sligo v. Wicklow - someone has to...
« on: July 04, 2014, 01:01:11 PM »
Well the general level of enthusiasm over this tie is just unreal! Don't think we've many if any Wicklow posters and the Sligo crew are probably like myself, dreading the game! We got a monumental hammering last weekend off Roscommon followed by a dressingroom barney. Most seem to think the latter is a good sign but I would pay more attention to what happened on the field. Also, arguably our best scoring forward who has been treated like crap all year headed for Boston on Wednesday. We're in poor shape.

Wicklow look to be a better side than when they beat us a few years ago.

Do the math as they yanks say!

General discussion / Mobile phone providers
« on: July 18, 2013, 01:53:14 PM »
Sorry if there's a thread on this but I did a quick search and found nothing.

Am currently out of contract (disgruntled to put it mildly with my curent provider O2) and looking for a deal. I prefer bill monthly. Tesco Mobile looks ridiculously cheap - what's the catch?

General discussion / Freedom of Info - VB last night
« on: May 22, 2013, 11:53:46 AM »
Last night on Vincent Browne they showed a Dáil Freedom of Information request relating to tax paid by income band. Can anyone tell me where I'd find a copy?

General discussion / Meath East By-Election
« on: March 28, 2013, 02:00:51 PM »
Looking at the tally figures for first preferences I wouldn't be convinced that FG have this wrapped up. They should be happy that their own vote held up. FF will be delighted. SF improved but not as much as I would say they hoped. Labour decimated. 62% didn't vote.

McEntee (FG) 9,457
Byrne (FF) 8,230
O Rourke (SF) 3,180
Gilroy (DDI) 1,613
Holmes (Lab) 959
O Buachalla 382
Keddy 252
McDonagh 250
Others 298

Seems the DDI transfers are breaking evenly and even though Byrne is getting a high proportion of SF transfers it won't be enough - according to David McCullagh of RTE on twitter.

General discussion / Fantasy Premier League
« on: May 11, 2012, 01:24:55 PM »
Couldn't find any recent thread on this subject so here's a new one.

Heading into the last week I've roared back into contention from a recent deficit of 100+ points to currently 9 behind the guy I simply must beat and 17 off the top. I have two free transfers and am thinking of dropping Bale and Papiss Cisse for Martin Petrov and Aguero. What do ye think? All 3 of us have Rooney, Ben Arfa and Dempsey. The two of them have Valencia and Evra and they only have one free transfer apiece this week.

Hurling Discussion / Damian Fitzhenry

I see on the RTE website that Damian Fitzhenry has retired from intercounty hurling. Bloody legend. He'll be sorely missed.

General discussion / White Collar Boxing
« on: July 10, 2009, 11:48:06 PM »
Our club are organising a White Collar Boxing night on August 1st in Sligo Southern Hotel. Training is going well (bloody tough though) and the lads doing it are really looking forward to it. Obviously if anyone is in the Sligo area and interested in going send me a PM.

Anyone ever do something like this before Any tips to save my good looks  :-*??!!!! After training some nights you think you're doing well and other nights you reckon you're useless. Would recommend it to any GAA club for a fundraiser. Contact www.whitecollarboxing.ie and Cathal O'Grady (former Olympian) will look after you. Sound lad.
