Antrim / Re: ANTRIM HURLING
November 07, 2008, 09:32:32 AM
Have just read the Antrim guest book and cant believe the stick this board is getting - as someone who admittedly doesn't post (as I'm not at home anymore and from a Division 3 football club anyway) I have been reading the board for years and 99.9% of it is good honest discussion. In fact I love it cause it keeps me up to date with whats happening in the county. Its seriously worrying that the County is so paranoid and aggressive on its own site - that cant be healthy. Vaguely remember the posts that they refer to but that was an isolated case. I see Milltown had a go back and got an essay in reply. You'd really have to wonder...

Interesting to hear Daithi Regan and Mark Landers on Newstalk about this - Regan got stuck in as usual and insisted that Donal Og was lucky to still be the Cork keeper after his displays this year particularly getting sent off against Galway. Both agreed that Donal Og should retire as should Frank Murphy although Regan insisted there was no chance of this happening. Landers made the point that McCarthy doesnt have the respect of the players and should have gone - he seemed to be blaming the training for Corks failure to stay with Kilkenny (surely a highly optimistic view?). Regan made the point that Kilkenny are a much better side and have brought younger players on and that basically the players should take a good look at themselves - also argued that not everything McCarthy did was wrong and strongly suggested that players should just play.

The interesting thing for me was that Landers seemed to have little sympathy this time - while auguring that McCarthy should have gone he seemed to think this was a step too far. Interesting given his role in 2002. Landers also expected the players not to play for McCarthy and that Cork hurling will be set back 10 years.

If Cork implode you'd have to think that 5 in a row is on - at least.

QuoteHowever, for whatever reason, the Cork County Board just seems to have personalities who can stamp their authority very strongly, and have no compunctions about doing so. That tends to grate with the players, who are then always in some sort of angst because of it.

I can understand their fustration AZ but it still doesnt change the fact that the manager was appointed by the board. I know GAA politics being what it is certain personalities embed themselves but they can always be voted out if the clubs get it together. Thats GAA democarcy its not perfect but whats the alternative? Certainly not to have the players in charge of all major decsions.

What do the Cork clubs feel about all this? Do they not send delegates to the county board like everywhere else? Is the Cork county board not a democratic representation of the clubs in the county?

And if so are the decisions they make by proxy not the democratic decisions of the Cork clubs and therefore the county?

What confuses me the absolute refusal on three occasions now of the Cork players to accept the decisions of their county board - the democratic decision of their board by the way.

Whatever their reasons (and I would think that most people would agree they have the success of Cork as their priority) they are hijacking the entire county and its processes. When it came to conditions and then the appointment of selectors for a manager I can see why they weren't happy but still its the decision of the county.

Should they not be trying to change the delegates to the county board? And as for this last argument you have to feel all sympathy has run out - it makes no sense to let players chose the manager (by all means an input) but for a million reasons they cant have the final say. The Donegal players were unhappy with the loss of their manager but didn't chose to strike and are again unhappy with the process but haven't taken the nuclear option.

The county belongs to the clubs not the senior county team players.

GAA Discussion / Re: The Sunday Game & Joe Brolly.
September 01, 2008, 11:26:24 AM
Think Brolly goes over the top on teams at times but I think hes good to have there - some of what he says is insightful and I'd have him over O'Rourke.

Brolly's half time analysis of Tyrones tactics was spoiled by his over the top eulogising of the team - Wexford promptly reduced an 8 point margin to 2 in 10 minutes.

That said think hes a good pundit. The banter the two of them have makes it - TV3 analysis, while good, came across as dull with no chemistry.

Yeah totally agree this is his big shot at getting the Hillary vote - surprising but will either be a master stroke or a disaster. I see she is under investigation in Alaska about the firing of her brother in law.

I think alot of women might see this as patronising as its clear what hes attempting to do and she isnt anywhere near the politician that Hillary is - alot depends on her performance. Any Hillary supporters that vote for McCain cant be Democrats in the first place so not sure how many she can win over.

Hard to pick a winner here - the swing voters in the States seem to be a shrinking demographic, the country is evenly split.

Has anybody taken a bet over the whole season?

Have Leeds, Shrewsbury and Birmingham to all go up along with Celtic to win the SPL and Torres to be top scorer.

Long shot but worth a few quid if it comes up..

GAA Discussion / Re: Aidan O'Mahony = Pathetic

QuoteNot ideal by any means, but a rule that deems what O'Connor did deserves a red is just plain wrong.

He lifted his hand to another players face - it was petulant and stupid. By the rules its a red. His red card should have stood. Now we have more messing on what is and isnt striking.

QuoteHave they finished working at the red cow yet?

:D :D

Everytime I go near the red cow it looks worse.

They now block lanes off with cones and no one appears to be working there at all. The whole thing is very confusing.

QuoteNortherners or people driving with non-irish plates are not exempt, there is no mechanism to track them down though,

Thats what I thought but you can be sure they will keep a record of the plates and then look to find some mechanism to get the payment probably with the fine for non payment added. Think I'll just pay.

The whole thing is dumb - spending whatever tens of millions to put this in place when that money could be well spent somewhere else. Stupid system for a stupid idea. And if they want to impose a toll they could at least impose it for everyone using it and not just the people you use that bit. The Red Cow exit cost the most money and yet people using that and not going through the toll bridge pay nothing. You can actually go from Bray to the Galway exit and pay nothing.

I got an easypass and have been using it - how do you know all Northern drivers are exempt?

Can anybody explain the constant attacks by that paper on Northen Nationalists - is there a reason for it?

Cusack is a complete joke on the North - I've read articles that were just absolute tabloid rubbish but yet he is allowed free rein to motor on.

Every aspect of Northern Nationalist life is ridiculed by that paper and that is no exaggeration - you only need to look at the vitriolic attacks on Armagh the year they won.

O'Reilly seems genuinely interested in the North and made big donations to Queens so the reason for this is beyond me.

How do you know Ni registered cars wont pay? From what I heard they had the issue of Northern cars covered.

Tried to sign up for eflow but the website wont let you select visa just laser in another quality move by the government / NRA  - any wonder most people dont have a tag.

Have signed up with eazypass which looks about the same and their web site works.

Anyway heres hoping it makes a big difference cause to be fair that road has improved no end from the way it was but with PLENTY of room for more improvement....
