Disappointing for Tyrone that Stevie has quit but no surprise. The real issue is the quality of training. There was a meeting and Harte was asked to change the trainer and he refused. Its a real shame but look at other counties and their trainers. Antrim managed by a PE teacher, Derry training by an experience athletica and fitness coach, Down trainer is Des Jennings an experienced fitnesss coach, Fermanagh - managed by a PE teacher, Armagh trainer Des Hollywood again an experienced coach, Cavan trained by Conal Sheridan a PE teacher, Donegal trained by Ryan Porter a sports Studies graduate, Monaghan trained by Martin McElkennon and Tyrone trainer by a primary school coach with no playing experience - NO wonder the training lacks intensity and is made up of primary school drills.

Another thing - Antrim, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal have Tyrone men managing or training them - yet we get a primary school coach with no experience. Paddy Tally again with a PE background is training st Marys. There needs to be a change - If we are not careful we could get a surprise with Down in June they are on a roll on confidence seems to be up. This could be another year lost.

But if Mickey Harte were to go in the moring who would replace him. Its all very well saying get rid of him - but would you want Liam Donnellly managing Tyrone or Monroe for that matter

Im puzzled endaman!! Are you saying that the real issue with SON was the quality of training?

Well endaman, are you happy with John Mc Elholm, as your club's new managerial appointment? He is not high profile but then neither was Ryan Porter a few years back with Dromore!

SON informed MH in October of his decision to retire. Harte has spoken to Stephen on a 2 or 3 occasions since regarding this. I am lead to believe that SON's injury is not as bad as Harte was making out. He has given 10 years service to Tyrone and now wants to give his all to his club.

Have to agree with you there lynchbhoy.......there's no way you could depend on young Bradley to carry the drinks down, as he would only drop them!!!!!!!!!!!!
def would agree there, he's been known to drop them 'down the hatch' with no encouragement, still at least he's a superb forward and we can indlge his wayward if not alcoholic tendency genius - a bit like Frank McGuigan sr, without the spare tyres!

Whoops, old Lynchie Bhoy!!!!!....Obviously your doctor has changed your tablets recently!!!!!

feck off thumper and go shag bambi  ;)

Tut, Tut....Lynchie Bhoy.........temper.....temper!!!!!!!!!!!!!....Remember........your tablets!!!!!!!

an open ended question. Think everyone will pick subjective teams, but in reality these teams may never have won the AI if playing together as an 'intercounty' team.

You have to play with what you are dealt, and for a start the above listed teams are too full of star performers and lacking imo a bit of balance etc
eg
as fantastic as the full forward lines are, imo you are better off playing a two man FF line (if you have the right kind of men to play in at FF - any two of canavan, linden, coulter, boyle, mcdonnell , p bradley etc etc would be ideal)

then how do you deploy the third full forward , cover for half back line, augmenting the midfield or picking up breaking ball.

you pick your team to suit the strengths of of your panel and your team style also accordingly.
different styles, tactics an templates are no good for certain teams (eg a long high ball into a FF line is of no use if you have tyrone sized oompa loompas on your team) ;)

lynchbhoy,i bet quite a number of those Tyrone 'oompa loompas' would make up your best 15 over the past 10-15 years!!!!!

Any study of great teams will provide a simple answer to your question.ie. a strong spine down the middle from FB.to FF. in terms of height and physicality. You can have all the skill and mobility possible on the wings, but if you lack a strong spine, they will always struggle.
Some deluded Managers believe the modern running, short passing game has negated the need for a strong spine. None of the aforesaid Managers will ever feature in Croke Park in September. History is a great teacher

And which players over the past 10-15 years would you consider, would make up this 'strong spine'?

Best team in the last 10-15 years?.....Im going to stick with Ulster Players

1   Mickey Mc Veigh
2   Tony Scullion
3   Cormac Mc Anallan
4   Kieran Mc Keever
5   D.J. O'Kane
6   Conor Gormley
7   Kieran Mc Geeney
8   Anthony Tohill
9   Sean Cavanagh
10 Greg Blaney
11 Brian Mc Guigan
12 Stephen O'Neill
13 Mickey Linden
14 Peter Canavan
15 Stephen Mc Donnell

Management Team      Mickey Harte, Pete Mc Grath and Paddy Tally

Did i read somwhere that Scullion didn't like training? Talented and all as he was would a  team get away with that today?

Come on Red Card, walk the walk.........name your team........Mc Geeney is the only man I have ever heard that liked training.!!!!!!!!.......Wouldn't hold that against Scullion

GAA Discussion / What makes a winning team?...
December 28, 2007, 04:27:32 PM
Over the past few weeks I've listened to people talking about their special recipes for many award winning dishes. This has got me thinking. What is the recipe for an all conquering Gaelic football team? What special ingredients make up a winning formula?....What type of player should play corner back?.....What is the best combination at Midfield?........Can a modern day Gaelic football team carry a specialist free taker who contributes only that to his team?........What type of Master Chef/ Manager, can make best use of these ingredients? In essence, which 15 players over the past 10 years would be included in this recipe and which individual is best equipped to Manage such a team?...These are just a few of the many questions that need answered....... Many of you out there can talk the talk, but I just wonder can you walk the walk!!!!!!!!

Is it not very optomistic to be talking in terms of an Ireland title in December ???? Just because you were unbeaten at 15 and 16 doesn't necessarily mean you'll remain undefeated at 18 ! Tyrone vocationals were tipped this year to go far but were dumped at the first hurdle -

Don't get me wrong I really do hope we can win another all Ireland minor but is it not creating a huge level of expectation and we're still in December 2007 ??????

I dont believe it is. I agree totally with Tyrone 86. I know we usually have to be somewhat cautious when talking about underage teams, but having watched this young team over the past few years, I believe the talent is there to challenge any team in Ireland

Tyrone must have some minor side !!!! Is talk of an All Ireland not being VERY optomistic ?

Tyrone have a fantastic minor team this year. They steamrolled everyone at U15 an U16.!...They have a good number of the Brothers Hogan cup winning team and the Vocational winning team...Things look very bright for this squad of players
