Rochford it is then.

Back to the football.

It seems that way but I'd imagine there will be a degree of horse trading over the set up he might want in place. Budgets will still dictate to a certain extent what happens next and what shape his management team and approach will take.
Either way Mayo are still a good team with room for improvement and he has demonstrated he can get a lot out of his panel.

Stephen Rochford has confirmed that he 'accepted a nomination' today to allow his name go forward for the Mayo manager post. #mayogaa #gaa

He has so far proven himself a good manager and coach and was always going to be nominated. The bigger issue now is if the Board want him and the set up he will want to put in place (or more to the point if the Board can afford it) and if they don't what alternatives they have on offer.

Anybody know if Rochford, or anyone else has been nominated?

Haven't heard of any club meetings held yet for nominations

Does anybody here get the sense that Rochford making a statement that he has not had an approach from the Co Board is somewhat informative when the Board stated they are waiting until Nov 1 to receive nominations?

When did he say that?

Is there a link to it anywhere??

Taken from Hogan Stand on Oct 27

Stephen Rochford says he has had "no contact" from Mayo County Board regarding the vacant Mayo senior football manager's job.

Rochford remains in charge of reigning All-Ireland club champions Corofin and he oversaw the Galway side's victory over Mohill of Leitrim on Sunday as they successfully opened the defence of their Connacht crown.

He has been strongly linked with the Mayo job but insists there's nothing happening on that front at present:

"No, there has been no contact. As everybody is aware, the nomination process opened last week. I know it sounds like a bit of a broken record but I was very much focused on the Corofin aspect," he told The Irish Independent.

"There are a couple of things happening in Mayo and as I indicated in the past it is something that would interest me but whether now is going to be the time or not is probably something we will know a lot in the next seven days.

"But the main interest for me at the moment is preparing Corofin for the Connacht semi-final away to St Mary's in Sligo on Sunday week. That's the priority at the minute."

He is aware of the process (nomination from club which I presume he would receive from Crossmolina) but he still notes he had no contact from Co Board. It was likely in response to the question if he had contact from the Board.
He goes on to say he is interested in the job. While he does point out he could wait he also seems to have given the Board a slightly stronger negotiating hand, particularly with John Maughan possibly waiting in the wings.

Why 5 nights a week? Surely the body needs a days rest in between training sessions? I'm no training expert but training everyday makes no sense whatsoever.

You're essentially trying to fit the workload of a professional athlete into an amateur structure. I think it's gone mad myself but if you're coaching at this level you've no choice because you won't be competitive otherwise. To me the season should be shorter, have more games and club championships not played until July.

The new fad for the first 3-4 months is to do double sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays with a saturday and sunday session and give guys the days off in between. So six sessions in 7 days.

Then the following week will look like

Gym 6am Monday
Training Tuesday 7.30pm- pitch
Gym 6am Wednesday
Thursday 7.30pm -pitch
friday  6am - gym
Saturday - 11am -pitch
You get Sunday off!

then back into the tuesday/thursday double session cycle. The top 6 counties all train like the above structure. I know that for a fact.

The big issue for me as a coach who has the background in S&C is the load factor. If you're trying to bulk lads up - how can you do it safely when lads are sprinting the following night. The fact is you're on a wing and a prayer. It's a game based on short sharp bursts which means everything that is done- has to be done at speed. You're trying to give as much rest as possible. 36 hours is the maximum that one can get.

That's why so many teams have so many players injured at once and have to carry squads of 35-37 players. Because at any one time you're guaranteed to have 8-10 injured.

Nutrition is huge for an amateur player. You literally have to lumping protein into at every available opportunity when in this cycle. There are professional players in the GAA already- called students. They live like pro athletes and as a result most guys play their best football between 18-25.

This idea that GAA players at county level peak in their late 20's - rubbish- their best football is long played at that level. Once they start working 9-5 -it's the beginning of the end. The human body can only sustain the above until 30 unless they have no job or are teachers.

Not enough money in the game to be professional. It would be a disaster for the Association. But they've got to do something about the training and shorten the bloody season.

INDIANA

It's a while since I played the game and the introduction of weight training was beginning as I was finishing up but I did have a degree of interest in the concept of weight training separate to the field/ball based training. It was my understanding that after a field session and likewise a pitch session there was a recovery period required the next day - to allow repair of the muscle damage  caused during the session just gone.
If I have that right then how can three pitch sessions and three gym sessions in one week be right? Given your S+C knowledge/training can you enlighten me? thanks

Best of luck to Achill in the Junior, and indeed to the other Mayo clubs that will be representing the county. I think Hollymount-Carramore will win the Intermediate and may be hard stopped. Very hard to call the Senior final at this stage.

Tell us farr are they as good as Kiltane were last year?Presume they will be favourites v Ballyhaunis?
Will keep Connelly occupied if they win Connacht.

Sorry for keeping you! I suppose they should be favourites, yet Belmullet took them to a replay in the semis whereas Ballyhaunis beat a hapless Neale team who sounded out of their depth in the other one. I don't know about them being as good as Kiltane though. They had a panel of 40+ training last year and that was a factor in them going so far I'd say.

I'm not so sure about why H/C would be favourites beyond operating in a higher division. It should be remembered Ballyhaunis had operated there until their annus horibilis last year and had played in 2 semi finals and I quarter final in the previous three years.
I saw both teams q/f's and s/f's (HC drawn game only) and I expect Ballyhaunis to win and maybe more comfortably than might be expected. THe only drawback I see for them is the weather. THey generally operate better in good conditions and may find the weather expected more difficult to deal with than HC

Did he attend trials?
I never heard these trials announced, are lads recruited directly based on co minor performance?
Best of luck to him, he seems to be a steady young lad

Not sure if Cian was involved in the public trials but his team-mate Sharoize Akram was last year, though. The last few years the names of the attendees of at least one under-age trial by Tadhg Kennelly has been named.

It might be a special case given his brother but I'm sure they vetted Cian somehow. I can imagine there would be a lot of scouts interested in the brother of Pearce Hanley.

Ya, I've seen the media coverage of trials and who attended but has Kennelly got some local scouting in place or is it up to a young lad to make contact with Kennelly.
He gets a bit of slack for recruiting from some quarters but it seems he has a local network.

Yep. I agree. It's the term I'm talking about, not the tactic.

McStay is usually the one who introduces a lot of these terms from US sports into gaelic football.

Barcelona in soccer in their pomp employed a very succesfuil version of this tactic. High risk, high reward.

I think Mc Hale's influence here might be more pertinent. Expect him on the Mc Stay ticket in Mayo

Is there a reason I'm missing that in the event Dublin and Donegal draw the Kerry/Mayo replay couldn't be played on the same day - one at 2pm and one at 7pm?
Should allow time for the ground to be cleared prior to second game?

Was down in Tullamore yesterday, if cork set up the same we'll destroy them. They left five lads in the full back line which meant extra half backs for Sligo. If Sligo could have run the ball they'd have won. It's mayos biggest strength, half backs running off shoulders.

As for Hurley, first time I've seen him in the flesh, not impressed and he's a fat f**ker, seriously after the Tipp keeper he was the most over weight player there, how do cork have a player carrying that kinda weight?

Colm Corkery???

Ballagh scored 1-5?
Were they missing players?

Ros need to keep it within 2-3 points or they will play div 3 again in 2016
Mayo need to win playing within themselves or they may not even see Sept this year.

I understand Roscommon have just carried out a review of underage coaching as it was felt the progression of recent underage success was slowing down. If that's right it seems like the Shannonsiders are attempting to make progress on a number of fronts. Well done on the sponsorship of the bus.
