GAA Discussion / Re: Spillane 'attacked' by Donegal fans
September 06, 2012, 07:21:39 PM
First of all there is no excuse for it, it's completely wrong, sin e.

Why do all these posters on these various forums, love to hate Spillane .  Everyone is an expert on the game nowadays.

Spillane says something obvious like " kick points from out the field to beat the blanket" everyone jumps on him , oh shuup what would you know , sure the football in your day was pathetic kick and hope...blah blah fookin blah.

It's like being on the opposition benches in Kildare street on these forums, everyone is great at telling you whats wrong and what wrong with who said it but nobody hardly ever comes up with a constructive counter argument.

Pat Spillane knows his football and has a legacy that will never be matched in the modern era, it kills the unnatural football newcomers.

I think most people in Mayo accept we can't possibly win it but we love the banter, the flags, the hype, the mike denver songs, the ticket scramble, the pints and the craic.

Maybe it would be an idea if we adopted a terrace chant from the English soccer clubs  when they were about to get relegated ' We're only here for the piss up, here for the piss  up , here for the pisssssss up, we're only here for the piss up"

LOL, i feel like i have to prove this now, all i can tell you is himself , his wife and son go to all the Dublin games, are good genuine GAA people too.He gave me tickets (free) for both the league s/f and final too, i'm sure he said he got them free from having a season ticket .

Yesterday evening i was outside , she approached me " well done on your win, you'll have to  get the flags out now" i says, " sure i'll have to get a ticket first"  ........" we have a ticket for ya, no problem, we were always going to get you one if ye won"

she did say how she gets the option of getting one every year but i'm not going to reveal that in here.

End of mighty story from a very content Mayo man living in Dublin.

Yeah, seems to be the trend here and elsewhere, plenty of small ball tickets about and no big ball.

My lovely Dublin neigbour just pulled me aside to tell me, i'll have a ticket for ya, no problem. I swear to god, never been as delighted in a long time.

This is my first All-Ireland final that I'll be watching as a neutral since 1998, since then I've shouted for Meath, Kerry, Galway, Kerry, Tyrone, Kerry, Kerry, Kerry, Kerry, Kerry, Kerry, Down and Kerry.
What's your last neutral final where you genuinely had no inclination one way or the other in your support?

On a separate issue I'd never attend an All-Ireland final as a neutral supporter as I feel it'd be wrong to take the seat of someone from one of the 2 (or 4) counties involved, especially when I've gotten to see almost 20 All-Ireland finals involving my own county (Kerry), but then I think if that was the way everyone did things then someone from let's say Laois would go their whole life without witnessing an All-Ireland final.
to be honest i wouldnt feel one bit bad about going to an allireland final as a neutral, half the couty supporters from both teams will be just people that have just jumped on the bandwagon now they are in the final.(i dont mean just dionegal & mayo, the same applies every year to every county)
most of them would niether go to a national league game or even a club game.
Anyone who is a 'true' supporter, usually has no bother getting a ticket.

I'm not sure that is true about all true supporters getting tickets and how do you define 'true supporter"  anyway?

I have not missed a championship game since i was seven years old ,1984(lon/new york exc) , i admit i don't go to all league games does that make me not a true supporter? . There was 3k Mayo supporters approx at the q/f game, i do wonder where all these supporters come out from but just as an example the aul fella was on the phone to me this morning from down home , " a woman was looking for four tickets for her and her three kids who are under 12 , never been to a game in their lives, mother included" she will get them , no doubt about it , high standing/plenty of mulla etc.

It makes me vomit but it is the reality of it all, people are very quick to say, you should of got your season ticket , yeah yeah, maybe some of us are unemployed at present and couldn't fork out at the time. I had accepted i will not get a ticket this time in my head before we even got there and i swore it wouldn't ruin the build up but already it's starting to wind me up

Yeah i agree with ya tubberman but we have to believe Horan knows best i suppose.

I would of chanced Gibbbons on the 40 tbh or SOS if fit, Varley has not impressed so far this year, must be running riot at training to warrant his place.

I just hope the players have more sense than to be reading this stuff.

I will never accept that the likes of Joe McQuillan, Martin Sludden and Pat Mceaneay set out to ride teams, does it happen? Of course it does, but is it done on purpose? In my view that's nonsense and loser talk.

With regards to media disrespect, you earn respect. For years Donegal were the biggest laughing stock in mainstream media, they've done something about it. There's a lesson in there, and I think James Horan has learned it pretty fast.

That's your opinion , i disagree as regards McQuillan , he has been officiating too many Dublin games, the AvB games thing is an absolute disgrace imo, too familiar with the Dublin team.

What have Donegal done that Mayo haven't done to earn respect?  Unfortunately you are conditioned too  like the majority of this country by what the media are telling you. I don't know where in gods name they're going to turn to, when we win it this year, esp the ex players journo brigade, the likes of Hayes would have to leave the stage (tv anyhow).

Sure it is a matter of "poor aul us " though thats the problem, the appointment of Mquillan for this game is farcical, it's ridiculous beyond ridiculous, AvB games, last years final, Meath 09, the list is endless on why he should not of been chosen.

As for the tv pundits and journos, it's beyond disrespect too at this stage the way they ignore or even laugh at Mayo.

Look at the love in with Donegal, this is their second time only in their history to win a semi final, i think we have won 12 in our history, five of them since 89 too but when it comes to Mayo history tis all about laughing at their displays in finals. I can live with that even , i was just pointing out the difference in pedigree , yet you would think it the opposite, it's the sheer disrespect for this present team that boils my blood.

40k ? We never had 40k in croke park in our history, i doubt even for a final.

Semi final ...Mayo should bring 15k in present climate.......in the good days we would of brought 25-30k max, never 40k to semi.
Sure teams never get anything close to 40k tickets for the All Ireland final i see Galway are only getting 12,000 tickets for hurling final. The 2006 semi final was probably one of Mayo's biggest ever followings in Croke park.

That doesn't mean though that Mayo people don't get the tickets for the final, the allocation to the county has little bearing on the actual amount, i get my tickets from UK and so do about another 50 mayo people i know.

I wouldn't say 06  semi was the biggest following we ever had in croker, for  me anyway 1989 final was unreal, canal end color was spectacular, my guess would be 89 final for biggest Mayo crowd in croker.

well sure mayo had the chance to go up and score when they caught the line ball but they then kicked it to a meath player so i dont really think they can complain about that to be honest.

You're missing the point,  nobody knows what would happen if but what we do know is that it was a free kick to Mayo out the sideline  and this wrong decision led to the passage in play that led to the wrongly awarded penalty.

The foot block amazes me, how people can even say there was any question over it, there was a Meath player (the striker of the ball) a Mayo player ( the tackler) and then two  yards behind the striker of the ball was the Mayo player who made contact with the ball with his foot...............ffs how can that be classed as a foot block. ( thats the way i seen it and i was on the hill) did i see it wrong?
