Down / Re: Down Club Hurling & Football

Totally agree Sabhallphadraig. We need positive commitment not negative cynicism. No 1 is like the gael, Herring-Gutter etc -hurlers on the ditch .He who never made a mistake never made anything.Ross and DJ will get it wrong but they have the courage to lead a limited group of players- we all need to support them.

The high field is the one that does if for me. Last year's collapse by Down in a soakin Healy Park was illuminated by Benny's catch. Even out and out Tyrone men beside us said they had never seen one like it. Apart from the goal he didn't do much else that day.The only other highlight was Colgan's goal to win the minor game, after the boy who had spent the whole of the Mc Rory final sledging Joe Ireland had given away the free and got himself sent off. Revenge is a dish best served cold!!

Sorry to hear about Naomh Mhuire. Suppose we can't have it everyway:back then Ireland was economically poor and the road to London was well worn ,now, there's plenty of work here and the attractions of London are limited. However, there was a great pride in being Irish and a determination to keep the games going. Pat Griffin played a big part in it and ,irunthev,if you see him , tell him a Downman sends his regards.

I played 2 games for Naomh Mhuire in 1982-know that is outside the 20 year rule butyou can't be ageist anymore- the guy that ran it was a decent spud called Pat Griffith(I think)-I think there was an O'Sullivan from Cork whose brother was a county player. Mighty craic-picked up from the c**k on Kilburn High Road in the back of a van and and I can't remember where we were dropped off. It was a dicey summer in London- Hyde park bombings when a horse ( called Sefton) and several soldiers(who very few remember the names of) were killed.I was staying in the Quex Road hostel and the NF put the windows in. Hard, honest football.

Agree Cloc Mor.Sorry to see Jerry Quinn go. His judgement with Paddy has cost him but to throw him out so soon is an over-reaction. We need leadership at a difficult time and I am unconvinced Kevin Bell will provide it. There is not a lot of glamour in the job and Jerry was not in it for his ego. Ah well, the GAA we all love !

GAA Discussion / Re: Paddy Heaney of the irish news!
December 07, 2006, 10:36:15 PM
Elias, I think you missed out on a 'not'!!I think Heaney is good and the IN GAA has improved beyond belief but I disagree about his abuse of committee men. Some may be fleecing it but I know the men and women in our club put serious hours in for no reward. I've been on the committee 5 or 6 times over the years and I looked forward to the meetings in the same way I looked forward to root canal work but somebody has to do it.
What do youse think of the other journos?
Adrian Cliche Logan ? John lift from the IN Campbell ? Pat Spillane ?Martin Breheny ?Sean Moran ?
I used to love the follower in the Donegal Democrat- a real poet with words.

Hats off to Cross. Jeez- praising a Tyrone man yesterday and an Armagh team today. This peace process really is something.

Agree that DG should be at full-forward. But wothout Ambrose ( and he had a poor enough championship) ,who do we have for midfield ?

GAA Discussion / Re: Drinking and the GAA
November 20, 2006, 07:21:16 PM
This is a 'refreshing' and honest debate without zealots like the gael.I think Mickey Harte's call is right and most county managers follow this line.I think that a total ban before big games can act as a bonding exercise where adults make a commitment and hold each other to it. In Down, I expect Ross and DJ to follow this line as they knew how to prepare but they also knew the value of building a team.
