Rangers: Sandy Jardine blast at 'greedy' exiting players
Rangers legend Sandy Jardine has accused of "greed" the eight players refusing to have their contracts switched to a new company.

Jardine claims they have reneged on an agreement to do so made before the takeover by Charles Green's consortium.

"There was an agreement reached over wage cuts and they got a great deal because they could leave for rock-bottom prices," he said.

Rangers crisis explained
Rangers went into administration owing up to £134m to unsecured creditors and will eventually be liquidated.
As a result its registrations with the Scottish FA and Scottish Premier League were terminated.
Charles Green led a consortium which bought Rangers' assets for £5.5m.
The former Sheffield United chief executive is reforming Rangers as a new company.
But the 'newco' will not get the required votes for re-admittance to the SPL.
Instead the new Rangers is expected to start life in the Scottish Football League.
"And now they have seen an opportunity. In many ways, it's greed."

Captain Steven Davis, plus Allan McGregor, Kyle Lafferty and Jamie Ness became the latest players to lodge objections to having their contracts switched to a "newco" Rangers.

Steven Naismith, Steven Whittaker, Sone Aluko and Rhys McCabe last week claimed to be free agents as a result of the old club heading for liquidation.

They had cited the likelihood of Rangers being demoted from the Scottish Premier League as the reason for their decision.

But Jardine believes their motives are purely financial and that their actions will deny Rangers vital funds as they seek to rebuild.

"I am dismayed and disappointed by the actions of the eight players," the club ambassador told Rangers' website.

"What they have done is seen an opportunity - whether it is them or their agents - to maximise their income.

Northern Ireland striker Lafferty is one of the eight players who are leaving Rangers
"The players took a salary sacrifice. But, for that, they got clauses in their contracts which would allow them to leave on rock bottom prices if clubs came in for them.

"I have to be honest and say I think the players have used our predicament to their gain."

The new Rangers face the prospect of losing a vote among the 12 SPL clubs and face another battle for admission to Division One or the Third Division next season.

"Of course, we as a club don't expect international players to go down a division or a few divisions," said former Rangers defender Jardine.

"We would be reluctant to see them go, but we would understand. They would move on with our best wishes and we would get a fee - albeit a rock bottom price in comparison to their market value.

"What we don't have an answer for is why the players simply did not adhere to the original deal and allow the club to make money from these reduced fees.

"What we have to do in our situation is to get everything sorted out, know what league we are in, know what players are staying and then start to build from there.

"If we don't have money from fees for players leaving - which we are completely entitled to - then what are we supposed to build on, fresh air?"

i'm guessing some do walking away

begs the question...if the CCCC couldn't find a credible witness, who's word did the referee take in the first place?

The 4th official who has no standing to make the report.

I'm struggling to comprehend this.

They can't take the word of the 4th official (because he is not allowed to point out indiscretions) yet they were apparently trying to find a "reputable witness".  Other than the 3 main officials how could they ever find a more "reputible witness" than the 4th official?

It's crazy.

What are the Duties of a Sideline Official?

The duties of the sideline official are:
To receive substitution notes giving the name and number of a substitute or temporary substitute and the name and number of the player being substituted or replaced. To record and report all substitutions and temporary substitutions made during a game to the referee for inclusion in the match report. To display by means of electronic or manual board the numbers of players being substituted. To display by means of electronic or manual board

Kerry hurling boss John Meyler has dropped three brothers from the panel because they played soccer three days before a national hurling league match.

Liam Boyle succeeded his brother Mikey as Kerry captain this year and youngest brother Pádriaig is seen as one of the best young hurlers in the county.   The Boyles have backboned the Kingdom's significant hurling progress over the last few years.

But Meyler has dropped all three for playing a soccer match three days before Kerry's league clash with Carlow last Sunday.   A fourth brother, Aidan, is still part of the team and has been selected to line out in this week's Division 2A clash with Wicklow.   Meyler's son David plays for Sunderland so an anti-soccer bias is thought not to be the issue.

In his two seasons in charge, Meyler has helped Kerry into hurling's third tier and to finally win the Christy Ring Cup last summer.

"I felt I had to address the situation because if we're to continue moving things on there has to be 100pc commitment from all of our players," Meyler said. "I informed the players involved earlier this week and thanked them for their time with the panel."

Mayo's Aidan O'Shea is likely to miss the upcoming games against Cork and Donegal after being red carded against Down last weekend.

The midfielder was issued with a straight red card from referee Barry Cassidy and would ordinarily have faced a one match ban.  Under the GAA's new suspension rules however; given that it is the second time in the last 48 weeks that O'Shea has received a red card for a Category 2 offence, he will face a further one game ban.  O'Shea received his first red card for an incident involving Kerry's Paul Galvin during the All-Ireland semi-final.

Mayo manager James Horan said it was unlikely that they would appeal the red card, but would wait until the referee's report became available before making a final call on the matter.

Derry referee Cassidy was reportedly verbally abused at the end of a match which Mayo surprisingly lost by five points at home.  It is thought fans were unhappy with the red card decision, which was awarded as early as the ninth minute and was viewed as the turning point of the game.

O'Shea will be a big loss to the Mayo cause as they aim to make the league play-offs; though their Division One status appears to be safe for another year with the Yew County currently lying on four points from three games played.

GAA Discussion / referees to strike
February 28, 2012, 03:15:00 PM
Longford GAA referees have voted to go on strike, bringing to a head a major problem facing the GAA as they attempt to bring referees expenses into line with the Revenue's guidelines.

Last Sunday, Wexford referees threatened to withdraw their services until they got an undertaking that current expenses rates would be retained.

The Revenue guidelines suggest referees get match expenses of €13.71 per match, and mileage of 50c per mile.

But in Wexford a referee has been getting €50 for a senior game and €30 for an underage game.

Joe O Brien, the co-ordinator of GAA referees in Longford, speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, said: "Longford is a very small county and most of the referees are centrally based.

"The new regulations are that Longford would have to pay €13.71 subsistence, plus 50c a mile. Now in a case of a lot of referees they wouldn't even reach the €20 mark in Longford for it [refereeing a match].

"That would be half of what they were getting for the last couple of years."

In Longford, the referees' fees come from a central fund, which is financed by all clubs in the county.

O'Brien continued: "How can it be resolved? It can only be resolved by people sitting around a table and ironing out this.

"I was at a meeting in Leinster last Wednesday night and we had a representative from Croke Park down and she said 'This was effective from then', and everyone from last weekend had to carry out the function of the €13.71 plus mileage.

"I have a huge issue with that as it brings the integrity of the referee in question, and that is not a road I would like to see referees having to go down. I think they have high enough standing that they wouldn't go down that road anyway."

RTÉ's Gaelic games correspondent Brian Carthy feels the problem will become a national issue.

He said: "Certainly [it will become national], because two proposals were put to the floor in Longford last night. One was for the referees in Longford to continue refereeing for the moment, but not to take the new proposed payments. It was felt that if the referees took the new fee it would compromise future negotiations.

"That particular proposal got very little support and I imagine the same would apply across the country.

"Whereas the second proposal to withdraw all services immediately was passed by an overwhelming majority. And the point is Longford is a small county, travel expenses would be minimal, and some referees would be out of pocket because of the high cost of petrol.

"It's obviously coming from Revenue as they decide the tax implications. The GAA have had discussions with Revenue and the main proposals are that club referees will get €13.71, civil service rates, 50c a mile.

"Obviously Revenue are looking at all areas to ensure everyone is tax compliant. Yesterday referees in Wexford decided to withdraw their services because of the new match fee proposals. But following consultation with the county chairman it was decided to hold off for the moment, until they got clarification.

"But it would need to be clarified. I'm sure the chairman in any county, let alone in Wexford, they cannot decide that previous arrangements don't apply now, if there's a directive from Revenue through Croke Park.

"Then the other situations, if there's payments to managers. If they're regulated, clearly there's going to be tax implications there.

"Revenue is looking closely at GAA to ensure that everything is above board. No under the counter payments, particularly to managers and all of that."

Did u get on today Milltown?? was at the game, thought it was a good game of hurling. Hows the young lad who got hurt?? what did u think of KL park??

I did, young lad ended up with the bar from the other fellas helmet through his hand, he went off to hospital, I haven't more from him.

Decent game for the time of year we scored 2-19 i think and considering the team we had out and a few lads that had been on their works do is some going. Burt really stuck with us till the last 5 minutes and managed to get the goals to stick with us. Our full backline were out on their Xmas do's  :D.

Sort of swan song for me with the seniors so i came on the last 5 minutes and had a couple of chances for a score and the last one i hit it fell short into our full forward who put it in the back of the net. Of course it was a pass  ;)

Impressed with Burt and number 13 was a standout hurler who'd get on most teams in Ulster.

I have to add (and I would have said this had you not asked) that i was impressed with the pitch for the time of year and the facilities were great. A bitta effort added with the flags all up and the anthems being played before the game.

Minutes silence before the game as a mark of respect for a young girl who'd died tragically last night.
MR2 check out desmondloughery.com cracking photos of todays game even the injury to number 7 well done

Trasna- what county are you refereeing in? I know a few Senior Armagh referees who would be nowhere near 20min for 2 miles, let alone 15-16.
i have been told Tyrone have a very strict fitness test which you must pass to get on the club championship panel even to do the line which is serious but i think the referees that want to progress give it a right go

Trasna man, as a matter of interest would there be many refs who can run two mile in 15 mins? Seems to be a steep enough test that one?
I was going to make a smart comment about refeering Rasharkin/Carrickmore/Dromore games but ill leave it this time......... ;)

Ballinaman/imtommygunn, i was wondering if you lads would have advice on how to lower my 10k time. I can run 5 miles in just under 34mins at ny best, but i cant get my 10k below 44. If i could keep my five mile pace going i would be hittin around 42.30. Am i too optimistic to expect this in your considered opinion?
the referees in Derry haven't had to do a fitness test for a few years now but i would think a good few would make it croke park are insisting on fitness tests for referees in all county's for next season

I would say do about thirty -forty minutes once a week(at a slow pace) to improve the fitness, some interval work and then do either a run or two more to get the fitness up or something else like biking / gym work. Intervals should be several reps of say 400 metres. Do say 4 by 400 and make sure that the pace of the first is the same as the pace of the last (otherwise they're too hard and you're not getting maximum benefit).

It may even make sense to do your intervals at the target pace. Increase the number of reps every week. Your 30/40 minute run should get easier.
Good advice there.
A nice session to do is minute on/minute off, on a trail route say. Stride out for a minute and then jog easy for a minute and repeat for 10 reps and you'll know all about it. 10 minute warm up, 20 minutes working hard and then 10 minutes warm down.

Can be progressed to 2 minutes on/1 off, for 8 reps or the dreaded 3 on, 2 off for 6 reps...killer.
thanks lads will give it a lash and see how i get on
