I think the chat over transfer fees is a bit silly, who spent the most and who's get the best value out of their new signings, I'd say to a man that Liverpool would rather have been in UTD's position these last 20 years than where they have been.
I don't think BR actually made this choice, in getting Mario, he doesn't fit into the formations he's been playing (which has brought him success, not actual trophy success )
As for this season Liverpool will come close again, if they win the big games or hold their own against City, Chelsea and Arsenal at Anfield then they will have a chance again. To be fair to BR if he can facilitate all these players coming in (was easier when they had only the league and domestic cups to worry about, smaller squad) and keep them fighting for their place, then Liverpool will be a force again.
I personally feel that they havent added enough to their squad to cope with the challenge of European football and chasing the league in the same season. Maybe Mario is the nugget that will drive them toward it but I have my doubts, just always remember how many times United struggled the weekend after a big European encounter, but a lot of that can be down to the fixture list being kind as well.
Top 4 again would be an acievement. I just can't see how they'll be able to juggle both the Champions League and Premier League after losing Suarez. The likes of Man City and Chelsea are able to cope with injuries loss of form. Think they need to do an Arsenal and prioritise finishing top 4 over the Champions League this year as finishing outside would be a massive set back.
