I think Ros got two points from play in the 2nd half, one of which was wide. Michael Duffy kept ye in it with a series of unbelievable frees to Roscommon that had even the hardiest Ros fans scratching their heads. As I always say, Duffy can somehow see every free that is 50 meters away off the ball but cannot see them right in front of his face. He should hang up his boots as its more comical he is getting. Today we had a Cavan player booked for trying to go down and pick up a ball, other ones booked for a push during a kickout. A roscommon player dragged a Cavan player to the ground in the 1st half, Duffy makes the action to show the player he pulled the player down and then gives the same player a yellow instead of a black. His umpires waves a definite Cavan point wide and then from a Carbon copy shot in the 2nd half give Ros a point that was clearly wide. Still I'd have taken a point before the game so happy enough.

I was situated in the non score board end. In the 1st half the umpires did indeed wave a Cavan point wide. The one we had in the 2nd half was going wide but curled in a correct call. We got two soft frees in the 2nd half but one of your defenders was very lucky not to give a penalty away when he touched the ball on the ground inside the square, play was waved on by Duffy and from the resulting attack Cavan scored a point. D Murtagh was also taken out in the build up to another Cavan point so the long story short he was bad for both sides & Michael Duffy shouldn't be allowed near a junior club game never mind a div 2 senior county game.

Anyway i wouldn't be looking to a poor ref as the reason we didn't win we simply didn't play well enough on the day & a similar performance on Saturday night in Newry will mean a certain defeat.

Well done to Cavan full value for the share of the spoils and will be disappointed they didn't win. For us  a error ridden display a similar performance to what we displayed in the defeat against NUIG a few weeks ago & if we play like that again in Newry we will receive a serious trimming.

Accomplished display by the young rossies this afternoon. Playing against the strong wind & leading by 2pts it was clear by half time that we were going to win. Within 5 mins of the second half we ended the game as a contest with some clinical finishing. Galway were missing a few key championship starters but to score 2-21 (2-16 from play) in January is very impressive regardless of the opposition.

Another useful pre season competition where we got the chance to give 35 lads a run out. Plenty of options for Mark Dowd to choose from & we won't be looking past Sligo after the way they pushed us all the way last year.

Mayo U21 manager very unhappy that he had to field without his senior panellists. Manager requested them and was denied.
Now I agree that senior should be priority but we didn't have a senior game at the weekend - apart from A v B match.
Be interesting to see if these U21s feature v Kerry at the weekend?

Coen,Durcan,Gallagher all started group hastings cup games surprising they didn't get a run out Saturday.

The one interesting quote from Niall Heffernan

Quotethere's no better preparation for the championship out there. "The intensity of that game you can't replace that with challenge games. The crowd out on the pitch, the Roscommon crowd standing on the sideline when we were attacking. That toughens you up, that's what these games are all about
The roars from rossfan would toughen any young lad up  ;)

Our forward line come Summer will be 2 Murtaghs 2 Smiths and Senan K plus 1 other.Midfield is a problem and neither of yesterday's starting pair will be there. The FB line yesterday will likely be our Summer one while HBL is a problem... Yet 2 of yesterday's likely to start
C Murtagh,D Smith will have to continue their good pre-season form during the NFL to hold down a championship starting spot. C Shine will be midfield starter come the summer he will improve with a more suitable partner. We all found out in 2012 against Galway that I Kilbride isn't inter county midfielder & yesterday confirmed it. Full back is very much or most settled line but Davy Murray could be giving a run out during the league & Seanie Mac moved into the half back line.

From that team yesterday there's probably on Bradshaw, O'Curraoin & Walsh that are nailed on to start in the Championship. Need to get off to a good start on Sunday, win the home games and we'll be pushing for promotion although that may depend on how many games the Corofin lads and Conroy will miss.
How many of the Corofin lads are likely starters? D Burke,G Sice,M Lundy certainly while it might be a bit soon for I Burke,Silke to start yet.

Flynn,Forde who came on yesterday will be championship starters as will Conroy,Hanley,Comer when available for selection.

Only pre season but good to win a trophy and have some momentum for the start of NFL. Average enough 1st half but we smartly went for goals against wind 2nd half. The almost muted celebrations similar to what you see when Mayo win Connacht championship titles was poof that the players minds are set on the tough more challenging div 2 league football ahead.

Very well done to St Croans and well deserved trip to Croke park for them.

Another good competitive contest that both managements will be happy with as they build towards the championship. Neither side showed their full hand we didn't start D Murtagh,E Smith and the injured lads Compton,Corcoran among others while Mayo didn't start D O Connor,S Coen,P Durcan,A Gallagher all senior players

The game itself was mostly about our wastefulness in front of the posts that almost presented the win to Mayo but thankfully we got our just rewards with a slice of luck on the late goal. Thats our 5th win in a row against Mayo at this level now & a far cry from 2009 when i walked out of Charlestown after losing a classic wondering would we ever beat them at U21 level again.

General discussion / Re: Man Utd Thread:

The night belongs to Cambridge United they displayed the coverage, determination that no amount of millions can buy, well done to them a well deserved replay in Old Trafford.

Of the Man United starting team tonight i think only 4 players Carrick,Jones,De Gea,Valencia played under Fergie too much change in a short space of time IMO. All i see this season is just a 11 individuals not playing as a Team with little plan, shape or pattern to their play. The squad is arguably better now than what Fergie had in 2013 however was few better forming 11 players into a team than him & he managed to keep the right consistency in place to challenge for trophies.  Van Gaal took over a side that finished in 7th was no quick fix regardless of the money spent.

I don't think the standard of PL is much different to last year. The fact is United have a uphill task to secure a champions league spot.  Pool,Arsenal in good form & pushing hard Spurs also there Southampton deservedly 3rd in the table, the pressure is on Van Gaal to keep United top 4 no doubt about it.

Donal Ward another 2006 minor if my memory serves me right he played in minor league but was focused on boxing when the championship came around.

Due to work commitments in Dublin David O Gara is taking time out. David Keenan is regaining his fitness & might feature this Sunday. You could arguably say of the 2006 minors when fit & available D O Malley,N Carty,D Keenan,K Higgins,D Shine,D O Gara are all senior starters which is a good return for any group of minors.

That s good going. Mayo only got 1 nailed on regular from the team that should have won in 08.

Mayo have a good number of starters from your 2006 U21 All Ireland winning team though.  G Cafferkey, K Higgins; C Barrett, T Cunniffe, C Boyle; S O'Shea all starters and others B Moran,M Ronaldson, M Conroy, E Varley,K O'Malley who should at least make your senior bench for the league this year. All of which is a fine return for any underage team.

It will be a short enough spin for the bus on Saturday. Can any of my fellow Rossies provide an update on the fitness of Thomas Corcoran, Cathal Compton and Ultan Harney?
In December the timescale for Corcoran was 2 to 3 months, after a year of playing through the pain Harney is wisely rested for championship. Compton was over played by DIT management & eventually picked up a knock that ruled him out of the O Byrne cup semi final. I haven't heard any news since so hopefully that means good news as the lad deserve a break on the injury front.

Michael Gunning who would have featured for our U21s this year did his ACL in a club game back in December. Kevin Finn is back after his 2nd ACL in 2 years, if ever a player needs a injury free year its him.

Our focus will be on staying up.
Absolutely. Only 3 home games & we haven't played at this league level for 7 years & the less said about that experience the better.
