Carrickfergus man 'fired imaginary machine gun' at police during riot
The men appeared at Belfast Magistrates' Court A Carrickfergus man allegedly fired an imaginary machine gun at police during street unrest in the town, a court has been told.

Brian McLean, 30, of Maple Gardens in Carrickfergus is accused of inciting protesters to riot, disorderly behaviour and failure to remove a mask worn to conceal his identity. He was remanded in custody.

The alleged offences occurred during a loyalist flag protest in the County Antrim town on the evening of Monday 17 December.

A detective constable who opposed Mr McLean's bail application at Belfast Magistrates' Court said this would deter others from becoming involved in trouble.

Defence solicitor Seamus Leonard stressed that his client was not accused of any actual rioting, or of throwing anything at the police.

"This is a man who was drunk and then with a dummy machine gun is shooting at police. That is what is alleged," the lawyer argued.

District Judge Fiona Bagnall refused bail due to the risk of re-offending, remanding McLean in custody until 2 January.

Meanwhile two other men, accused of blocking roads in Belfast, were granted bail subject to afternoon curfews.

Stephen Smith, 25, of Matilda Avenue, Belfast, and Tyler Thompson, 18, from Blythe Street in the city, are both charged with failing to remove disguises and obstructing roads.

The court heard how Mr Smith was arrested in connection with a protest at Great Victoria Street on Monday night.

A defence lawyer said his client went to the scene as a spectator, adding that there was no violence at that stage.

Granting bail to both Mr Smith and Mr Thompson, Judge Bagnall said each case had to be decided on its merits.

She imposed a maximum 12-hour curfew on both accused, starting from 1600 GMT.

Smith and Thompson were also each banned from having any flags, or going within 500 metres of demonstrations or parades.
Both men will appear again in court in eight weeks' time.
How will they express their britishness now :(

At first and after all that has happened in this part of the world I found the "Northern Irish Only" answer odd. But Is this an acceptance after 90 odd years of partition that this is really how things will end up and that we might as well accept it. The power and  influence of media in the north does seem to have a large affect on people's psyche.  I myself feel Irish only and have been born and bred in Derry but I have always been surrounded by all aspects of Irish culture from a very early age, it is easy then to forget that this is not the case for many northern catholics. I wouldnt read into the passport thing much, thats more to do with handiness and maybe cost, but I suppose if people arent prepared to pay a few extra quid for Irish passport they are not going to vote to give up UK handouts.

Is an Irish passport not slighlty cheaper at the minute?  €88.50 using Passport Express (aaprox £70) against £72.50 for a British??

Edit:  If you go to the Irish Embassy in London it's £70.  EG told me ;)

Irish Childrens passports are cheaper. €35 for a 3 year against £60 for a 5 year.
A few young lads from here got Brit passports to go to America told me no need for a visa but they might have made it up to stop the piss been taken

What was the story about renaming the RVH?
I didn't catch the story, have just people complaining about it.
Gerry Kelly was using it to point out how much Britishness there is around the wee six and the Unionist get hung up on the flag

Ugly scenes marred the provincial JHC final in Ballyhaunis between Calry St-Joseph's and Skehana after Mayo referee Kevin McGeeney was struck to the ground after a group of Skehana players swarmed around him following the final whistle.

Calry St-Joseph's will remember the game fondly as they were crowned Connacht champions thanks to a long range winner from Keith Raymond in the dying seconds that gave them the victory by 1-12 to 1-11. Raymond was a class apart on the day and underlined his credentials as Sligo's best hurler with a personal score of 1-9.

Connacht GAA chiefs will wait for the referee's report before launching an investigation but Skehana players are likely to find themselves in implicated after they swarmed around McGeeney as the game finished.

Match reports appear to implicate one Skehana player in particular who struck McGeeney but Connacht council secretary John Pretty has asserted that he will wait for the referee to submit his report before deciding on whether to launch an investigation.

He also warned the players involved that he would do everything possible to ensure that he correct outcome was reached and that he would not be found wanting in this matter.

The Londonderry family of a remand prisoner at Maghaberry jail has claimed his wrist has been broken in a struggle with prison staff.

43-year-old Tony Taylor has been charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life last year.

His sister claimed prison staff became violent towards her brother when he asked for documents ahead of a court appearance in Londonderry.

Joanne Starrs claimed tensions are running high in Maghaberry.

"When I spoke to him on Thursday, Tony told me the prison staff are punching them and spitting on their food in front of them before they eat it.

"He said the tension is terrible in the prison at the moment."

Ms Starrs said the tensions came to a head as her brother was preparing to go to court for a remand hearing.

"On the way out to the van to go to the court hearing he asked for his papers and was told he wasn't getting them.

"Tony said he was entitled to them and asked the prison officer to go and ask the governor for them.

"When he came back, he said the governor told him he wasn't getting them and a member of the prison staff bounced Tony's head off the side of the van.

"Then he put his hand on the back of his head and pushed it down on a bar.

"The riot squad came out and kicked Tony in the face and stood on his hand.

"He didn't get any treatment until Thursday night when it was confirmed that his wrist was broken and he also has injuries to his thumb and back.

Ms Starrs also claimed that while he was being beaten he was called a criminal by prison officers, and an official complaint has to made to prison authorities.

The Prison Service have issued the following statement: "The Governor is investigating an incident in a prison service van at Maghaberry Prison yesterday morning, (Thursday) involving a prisoner who was about to leave for court. One Prisoner Custody Officer received hospital treatment following the incident."

garmin watches and foot pods aren't that expensive. have a garmin watch myself. cost me just over £110, but you couldn't wear it in a game. the foot pod works on measuring your stride when you run and then it just counts how many strides you make i think, but i could be wrong on this. the foot pod would be flawed as running and running in a game of football are totally different and the reading would be skewed i'd have thought and not true.

@ trasna man, what type of gear is it and is there a website that holds the stats so we can have a look at them please?
go to nike+ website
as well as tracking the refereeing it tracks my runs in winter on the roads or the trend mill Stephen Cleary from the Steelstown club uses the Addais one which is more expensive but gives more information
