GAA Discussion / Re: Your GAA moment of the year
December 30, 2015, 08:45:13 AM
Waterford beating Cork in Munster hurling semi final to follow up on win over them a few weeks earlier in league final. Tom Devine's clinching goal in last minute led to big celebrations in the crowd and put us back in Munster final.
Outside of that Westmeath v Meath game was great with, high scoring, attacking football and an amazing comeback and you could see how much it meant to them to finally beat Meath in the championship.
Overall not too many standout moments this year in hurling or football.

Waterford final is on tomorrow night at last with Stradbally v Ballinacourty and for some reason the Munster club game v Nemo Rangers is on the following night and not on the Sunday so less than 24 hours to prepare for it.

Yeah game between Waterford champions and now Nemo Rangers is put back a week now so barring replays/postponements Waterford should have a team in it as semis to played next weekend and presumably final midweek under lights then next week.

Waterford won't have a county champion by 1 November anyway as some play offs have to be played before quarter finals even start. 3 teams finished on same points after group stages but because one of the teams The Nire I think got 2 points because their opponent conceded a walkover points difference can't be used to seed teams for quarters. It's a bit of a mess and not the first team the football championship won't be decided in time for Munster club.

It's ridiculous that retired judges and solicitors are involved in this process at the last minute. County boards preach discipline at club level yet do all in their power to get a county player off even when it is obvious he deserved the suspension. I heard on radio during the week Dublin also appealed Liam Rushe's red card against Waterford even though he struck with the hurley to opponents helmet off the ball. This appeal was rightly turned down.
There are too many layers of appeal and counties are chancing their arm that one of them will overturn the ban but sporting justice should be done and legal eagles kept away from the process.

I hope we see a good, close game on Sunday after a disappointing championship and reckon we have a good chance of this as both teams play attacking hurling and have strong forwards who can put up big scores. Tipperary have had a long break since the Munster final and this has affected Munster teams before. Galway have been impressive sofar particularly v Dublin in the replay and Cork. It's a hard one to call but would favour Galway slightly.

Hurling Discussion / Re: All Ireland Qualifiers

It wasn't a great game. Some flashes of good hurling from the likes of Reid, Hogan,Aylward and for Waterford De Burca, the Fives brothers, Gleeson and Dunford were best with Maurice Shanahan also good in first half but struggled when outnumbered by Kilkenny defence in 2nd half under high balls. Game kind of petered out near the end with Kilkenny holding on the lead and not looking like conceding the goal Waterford needed.
Overall a good season for Waterford winning the league and beating Cork and Dublin in championship so we would have taken that at start of the year.

I'm looking forward to Sunday now. If Waterford can keep the defence tight and prevent Kilkenny getting goals in the first half and keep in the game until the 2nd half we have a chance but keeping the likes of TJ Reid and Richie Hogan quiet will be very difficult.
I'd love to see Waterford finally beat Kilkenny in championship but it's hard to back against the Cats.

Johnny Ryan sent off Shane O'Sullivan very harshly in the first half of the relegation play off last year between Waterford and Dublin so don't think he has anything against Dublin unless ye have upset him since then!
Waterford did get a couple of decisions in their favour on Sunday but wouldn't have affected outcome of the game.

Waterford senior club matches were played up to about 2/3 weeks before Munster final but I think once you're on a inter county senior squad even if you're only making up the numbers in training you won't play club games any closer than 2 weeks before a championship match. I'd imagine most counties are the same.

How do you see the two quarter finals going? Waterford v Dublin at 2pm so would fancy us to win that with maybe 5 points to spare. It won't be a great game and don't think it'll be high scoring but think Waterford have enough to see off Dublin who haven't been great so far in the championship.
Galway v Cork is hard to call as Cork have momentum behind them after two wins while Galway performed well enough in Leinster but are coming from a defeat. Cork seem to have tightened up in last 2 games and have kept a clean sheet in both.

Great game between Clare v Waterford last night. Clare aren't ready to give up their under 21 dominance yet even against a fancied Waterford team with a lot of players from senior team. Waterford were looking good in first half but Clare turned it around at start of 2nd half to take the lead. Bobby Duggan scored 0-13, 7 from play and and Ian Galvin was also good up front for Clare.
Tipperary v Limerick now tonight also on TG4.

;D Oh yeah Limerick Cork in 2013 was goalless. I forgot about that earlier but it is a rare occurrence in a Munster final as you say.

There were only 2 goals scored in 3 championship matches last weekend. It's been a while since there was a Munster final without a goal so it won't go down as a great final by any means. Waterford were well in it up to last 10 minutes or so and Tipp only got more than a goal ahead late on. James Owens didn't do Waterford any favours in first half I felt as he let a lot of holding and spare arm tackling go with 2 fouls both on Jake Dillon I think in the space of a few minutes not being given which annoyed the Waterford crowd. Tipp overall had better forwards which was main difference and Waterford also presented them with 2 points from short clearances by Stephen O'Keeffe in 2nd half and hit some bad wides.

It's a long time since Kilkenny hurlers got a beating like that. Now they know what it feels like to be on the other end of a beating.
There are some good teams in contention for the under 21 this year. Clare v Waterford and Tipperary v Limerick in Munster semi finals next week.
