GAA Discussion / Re: November 2008 GAA Transfers
November 24, 2008, 05:02:34 PM
I don't know exactly what can be done - but it definitely needs to be looked at, anything that is done won't happen overnight. I don't want to mention the payment of players as this apparently  ;) goes against everything the GAA stands for etc. But there are ways around this for instance the beefing up of expense payments, tax breaks, these could be brought in and thus technically the players would still be amateur.

GAA Discussion / Re: National League tickets?
November 24, 2008, 04:29:23 PM
NFL fixtures haven't been officially passed yet - so i'd imagine there waiting them to be passed before dishing out season tickets.  The gaurantee of an AIF ticket would be great if true, but I think it could be unworkable.

I know Gary McCloskey from Leitrim transferred in June. Is there any other IC players that may feature next year for London? To view all transfers, go to archives in the GAA website..

McCluskey will be lining out for Leitrim next year, think there could be a Ciaran McManus arrangement being setup where by he'll travel home at weekends for games.

Your definitely on to something here though - as IMO the following few months could be the busiest in years for transfers.  With all the talk about losing players to Aussie Rules should we not be more worried about losing players to emigration?

The reason the national anthem is played at home games is due to the fact that the president or the government may be at the game (well thats the excuse anyway). can people not just get over the Irelands call thing ff!
It might help some to get over it if you wrote something sensible.
The anthem is played and the flag is flown because the game is played in the jurisdiction of the Republic.

When the president is there in an official capacity, a short version of the anthem is also played. That is the presidential salute, played in her honour.

No your are incorrect, if that was the case they should have played GSTQ in Ravenhill last year as they were in NI. there is no obligation to play the national anthem in Ireland ahead of Irelands Call but it is seem as a compromise to play it in Ireland as it would upset too many people if it was not played!

Compromise Main Street, if the two traditions are ever to get on we will need more of it!!!!

What are you blabbering about now?
I corrected your nonsense about why the Irish anthem is played in Lansdowne.
That is the IRFU policy at Lansdowne. They can change that policy if they so decide according to the IRFU procedures.

Whatever happens at Ravenhill is another matter altogether and has nothing to do with why the ANbF is played at Lansdowne.

::) stop being so rude

Maybe i've missed this somewhere - but at the last Ireland game in Ravenhill, what anthems were played??

Irelands Call was played

No AnBF - i suppose the question is - when is a home game not a home game, but i suppose the IRFU have to try and please everyone. I don't really care what they play at their games as i have only passing interest in the Rugby as i don't see it as anywhere near a good a game to watch as Gaelic football never mind Hurling.

Quotewas it not 6c ?

It is 6c+vat.

There is also another 1% levy for anyone over 100 grand.

Quote€200 on second homes is the thin edge of the property tax wedge.

it is much wiser to tax houses every year than just take a huge whack from them when they are sold. The stamp duty fell like a burst ballon when the property prices crashed, while a tax per house would be a stable source of revenue.

TEXT OF SPEECH ON LEISURE

VAT/Excise
I am increasing the Standard Rate of VAT by ½% to 21½% from 1 December. There will be no change in the zero rate which applies to food, children's clothes and footwear, oral medicines and several other products. The 13½% rate which applies to new houses, labour intensive services, gas, electricity and home heating fuel will also remain unchanged.

Excises on cigarettes will go up by 50 cent per packet of 20. I am increasing the excise on a standard bottle of wine by 50 cent with pro rata increases on other wine products and an increase of 8 cent on a litre of petrol. There will be no excise increase on beer, cider, spirits or on diesel. The excise changes are VAT inclusive and will take effect from midnight tonight.

was it not 6c ?

I think it is a bit unfair yo impose the 1% LEVY on everyone

no it is 8c - just when it was actually going down over the last few weeks it'll be pardon the pun driven back up.

Going to be filling up 2nite on my way home - 8c on petrol. Might have to look at Diesel car for 09.

GAA Discussion / Re: Mickey Quinn all-star

Just after officiating on a bet for 20€ on the fact that Mickey Quinn won an all-star in 1990 (google-aidied judging) What did Leitrim/Mickey Quinn do in 1990 that led to him winning Leitrim's 1st all-star award? Was it All-Ireland B or Railway cup?

It was more what is called a "services rendered" award, ie one given to a veteran (usually from one of the weaker or middle-tier counties) nearing the end of their career in recognition of stellar performances over a number of years previously.

Wouldn't agree with that for a start Mickey Quinn didn't hang up his inter county boots until around 96/97 and he is still going strong a club football this year in Leitrim. Exceptional player of his day.

Looks like it'll be one the most competitive championship in a few years - especially with Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim under new management.  There is a real buzz been created in Leitrim with the arrival of Mickey Moran & John Morrison.  Over sixty players in training at the moment, alot of good vibes coming out of the camp not like the last few years with des dolan.  Great to see some players coming back into the fold that wudn't play under dolan.  To cap things off the draw last nite gave every one something to look forward to with a home game against the Rossies, you can forget about your Dublin v Westdublin this will be a full house as per usual and it won't take Red Top Tabloids to sell this game unlike the aforementioned.

Can't believe Declan Maxwell hasn't even been considered yet again. I know he doesn't play as many high profile games as many of those that were selected, but I'd ask anyone here that has seen him play in championship games for Leitrim to tell me he has not impressed you. The original full forward before donaghy made it fashionable, he has serious fielding ability, natural scorer and 6ft 3 as well.

P.s he took Finian Hanley to the cleaners in the Championship this year - yet Hanley gets selected based on his marshalling of Donaghy in Croker!!

Wexford, the surprise package of this year's All-Ireland championship have four nominees, along with fellow beaten semi-finalists Cork.

Leinster champions Dublin have just three players nominated compared to seven last year.

General discussion / Ronaldo £135 million ???
September 02, 2008, 07:00:26 PM
The new owner of Manchester City, Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim, has intimated that Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment (ADUG) could back a £135million bid for Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo in January.

The agreement of an ADUG takeover deal at Eastlands was announced on Monday and was followed by the shock capture of Real Madrid forward Robinho for a British record fee of £32.5million.

Chief executive of Hydra Properties, Al-Fahim is reportedly 10 times richer than his counterpart at Chelsea, Roman Abramovich, and he has revealed there are plans to bring in a 'minimum 18' players to the club.

"Ronaldo has said he wants to play for the biggest club in the world, so we will see in January if he is serious," Al-Fahim said in The Guardian.

"Real Madrid were estimating his value at $160million (£90m) but for a player like that, to actually get him, will cost a lot more; I would think $240million (£135m). But why not? We are going to be the biggest club in the world, bigger than both Real Madrid and Manchester United."

It is also reported City will look to target the likes of Liverpool striker Fernando Torres and Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas as the club aim to build a side capable of achieving success in Europe's most prestigious competition.

Al-Fahim added: "We want a team who can win the UEFA Champions League. We're not just going to spend money on anyone, but if we can get the biggest players in the world, and of course if the manager wants them, then we will get them."

Is this the end of football, i thought the introduction of Abramovich was bad but this crowd look like they will just take over at any cost.  I wonder are they interested in investing in Leitrim football with a few Kerry forwards!!
