General discussion / Re: Prayers Badly Needed
January 15, 2009, 11:57:52 AM
Unfortunately baby miceal didnt make it, he was just to small. He hung in there for 3 weeks but it wasnt to be.  Havent posted on the thread about it before now as it just didnt feel right.

The parents seem to be doing fine now but it was a bit hairy there for a while.

Makes you realise how trivial all our gripes on the board are. Thanks for asking bout the wee lad and thanks to everyone who offered prayers.

If you all could maybe say a wee prayer for the parents it would do no harm.

I'm not defending America because I live here but you can't blame society nor can you judge America or Americans by what you see on TV.
Ireland isn't all Blarney stones, guinness and red haired lovelys river dancing down the street - but that is what the world is told.
Have some friggin kop on and blame the mother here and the lad himself

Ireland is like that - If your off your head on acid.

i reckon cullaville will stay up and sarsfields to go down.

In division 2 i think granmore will do very well.

granemore have 3 men on the county panel this year, if they all make it Granemore might struggle without them.

Good point Gander Graemore looked poor enough without K toner and McClelland the couple of times I seen them last year another possible absence would add to this.

Cullyhanna could also suffer in Div 1 with McKeever and Mackin (possibly) on county panel. Seen them a few times last year and without them 2 they would be seriously weaker.  Cullyhanna would miss them 2 alot more than some other Div teams would miss their county men.

Andrew McCann was as good a wing back as ever played for Armagh,

Spot on, one of the quieter heroes of 02.

I agree, never thought he got the plaudits his performances deserved.  Was a real class player who just went about his business and done the simple things really well and never looked in trouble on a pitch.  Suppose thats where the whole "great players always seem to have time on the ball" would apply.

Look, you wouldnt have any AI if cooper had kicked for that point in the last minute instead of Brosnan in 2002.

I know ur prob on the wind up, but cant let that one slide. Armagh won the AI in 2002 because they deserved it and were the better team over the whole game. Yes Kerry could have won as it was tight but IMHO Armagh deserved it that year. And sure yous have enough AIs to do a few counties Mike, as you Kerry folk like telling us.

on most of the three occasions billy highlights armagh were beaten by the better team. billy may have thought armagh would be better than they were.

So you actually agree with me??

I spend alot more of my time in Armagh than Derry
I do alot of coaching around Armagh for last few years, so I be talking to Armagh GAA people all the time,
Im going out with an Armagh girl who is from a prominent GAA family in the county

All these things have enabled me to ascertain the feelings of the average Armagh gael towards the other teams I mentioned and although not under Kernan, towards Wexford this year. In all four Instances, Fermanagh 2004, Kerry 2006 (after Munster final Collapse), Derry 2007 and Wexford 2008 the general consensus seemed to be turning up was all that would be required.

On the night before the Kerry game 2006 I was at a wedding where the bride was the sister of one of your famous players and the Groom was also a GAA man. When discussing the next days game I offered that Kerry didnt become a bad team over night and Armagh fans were taking them to lightly. The Armagh folk laughed there heads of and I was offered plenty of bets. I took on a few which kindly rewarded to the tune of £150 between 3 fellas and also could of had a few lads mortgages if I had wanted. Now placing bets on your own county in the championship is not a conceited or arrogant practice, but failing to even acknowledge that the opposition have any hope of victory is, and especially when that opposition were Kerry who had appeared in the last 3 AI finals.

But that wasnt the worst I heard at said wedding. On one of my many trips to the toilet I overheard a group of 5-6 grown men discussing what accomodation they had booked for the AI final and this was the night before Armagh were to play the QF!! The men hadnt booked it to enjoy the AI weekend experience no matter who played, as they openly talked about how it was gonna be great to see Armagh in the final again to make up for 2003 - 2005 and were also discussing how smart they were as everyone in Armagh would be looking accomodation after the semi.

Maybe you dont see this as over confidence/Arrogance or showing opponents no respect but that is how I would look at it.

GAA can you honestly say that in 2004, 2006, 2007 (kernan) and 2008 (PMD) that the vast majority of Armagh fans didnt think the result was inevitable before a ball had been kicked??

My opinion on Joe Kernans status is the following.  I have yet to hear anyone who has actually achieved more than him in management describing him as overrated.  I only hear North Armagh types describing him as overrated.

David Jeffries of Linfield texted me there to say he feels Joe got alot more credit for his All Ireland than 'big Davy' got for his (Setanta cup). I told him to f**k off back to Wndsor as he is never of the NI soccer channel (BBC NI) along with all those other below average ability soccer types.

A GREAT club manager.....a GOOD county manager.

As they say about teams, good teams win one, great teams win two.  Surely the same must apply to managers.

I agree with that. Achieved amazing things with Cross at club level, but he inherited a Good Armagh team who had been knocking on the door for a couple of years.  He also failed to develop the team IMHO over the rest of his tenure, with the same 18 or so players making up his teams and real subs and the rest only playing in bits and pieces with no real chance of getting a proper go at it.

I would however seriously question the logic that Joe Kernan cost Armagh a heap of AIs.

2003 - (Tyrone) Beaten by a better team. FULL STOP!

2004 - (Fermanagh) Armagh far to confident and arrogant (and that includes all you supporters) and were beaten by a better team on the day.

2005 - (Tyrone) Beaten by a slightly better team, but game could have gone either way. (great game)

2006 - (Kerry) Armagh far to confident and arrogant (and that definately includes all you supporters) Beaten by a much better team.

2007 - (Derry) Armagh again thinking they were alot better than they actually were and lost a tight game.

Armagh players have to take at least some of the blame in some of these games for not showing opponents enough respect/ being over confident/ not performing.
Many Armagh supporters have to take a look at themselves as their expectactions are unrealistic at times and their 'we are Armagh and we are better than anyone else' attitude is bound to rub of on players.

Accent dropping is also a bugbear of mine. Have met loads of people here in Dublin with what you would I suppose call a "plum accent" /what I think is called a "Dublin 4 accent" outside of Dublin and am amazed to find out they came from the country. Imo there is no way they could have picked it up naturally so I have to presume they deliberately dropped their own accent.......only  for it hilariously to resurface when they are drunk. Women are by far the worst offenders.
Was gobsmacked for example to hear last week that Claire Byrne from Newstalk was from Laois, Mountrath I think.

The country posters here must have noticed this phenomenon.

Would also agree to an extent that the Dublin accent would seem to be far and away the most disliked accent in Ireland.

Well the Monaghan (Monakon) accent is pretty horrible and can be very hard to understand and the Armagh accent (South Armagh) in particular can be brutal to listen to, with every sentence finished with the word 'boy' but pronunced 'Boi'. But have to say the Belfast spides high pitched shriek is the winner in the most hated and horrible accent.

Is that why there is midweek matched? As far as I remember there were McKenna cup games mid week last year aswell.

There was.

I thought there was always meant to be mid-week games and it had nothing to do with Tyrone.

Downs fitness in the Mc Kenna Cup is testimony to the fact that they were training before xmas.

Down hurlers and footballers have been training away flat out since mid November and it was a down player who told me this.

The footballers will prob win the McKenna cup again as they are so much fitter and furter ahead of other teams in their preparations, but like last year, when the other teams get some work done and get fitness levels up, Down will be overtaken by alot of teams. Last year I thought Down looked a very tired team later in the year against Wexford and didnt look great against Armagh either earlier in the summer. They need to get out of Div 3 if they are going to catch up with the teams ahead of them.
