Father horrified to see dead son's name on banner at loyalist bonfire
12/07/2007 - 15:25:08

A Coleraine father has spoken out against loyalists who put his dead son's name on top of a bonfire in the town.

Catholic teenager Aaron Hill died two weeks ago of a heart condition. Neither he nor his family have any paramilitary or political involvement.

His father, Peter, said he was stunned and horrified to see his 16 year-old son's name written large on a banner at a loyalist bonfire with the question next to it, 'who's next?'

When he tried to remove it, loyalists threatened him.

He then complained to the police but they at first said they couldn't take any action although a later statement said they were investigating.

The SDLP assembly member for East Derry, John Dallat, said it was a shameful, vile, sectarian incident.

Offaly are now back where they were in the early 80's - an average hurling county

they took their underage development up a few steps in the 80's to produce a few great teams and players

now they need to look at why they are not producing top quality talent and rectify the problems from the grassroots up

We won our first Leinster in 1980, the AI in 81, robbed by Matt Ruth in 82, AI finalists in 84 and won the AI in 85.  Not bad for an "average" team.

What happens if, during one of the soccer matches at Croke park, there's anti-GAA chants from some of the crowd?  I think it's a distinct possibility.  Should the offenders be f*cked out?

I see that they won a junior football title in only their second year competing.  Pillar had a couple of nephews on it.  When will we see Gonzaga, St. Michaels and Clongoes lift silverware?  Hell freezing over sooner, maybe?  At least Blackrock make an effort with gaelic games as well.  Is there any GAA school that makes such efforts to keep out other games as rugby schools?  My own alma mater, an All-Ireland senior hurling colleges winner, would let Olympic tiddlywinks in, if people wanted it.

PJ Ward is training with Offaly now!

And David Mitcherell moving to Longford.  Will ye be able to field a team next year?  O'Flaharta must be hard task master.
