From Setanta.com -

Kerry's Kieran Donaghy has been cleared to play in Saturday night's National Football League clash with Cork in Tralee after a successful appeal to the GAA's Central Hearings Committee against a two-week ban.

The Austin Stack's clubman was issued the suspension after being sent off following two yellow cards on two separate occassions within a 48-week period.

"The Committee, having viewed video of the incident and having received clarification from the referee, decided that the player was not guilty of the infraction as reported," read a GAA statement.

Donaghy was present at the CHC meeting on Thursday night and has been named at midfield in Kingdom manager Pat O'Shea's team to play the Rebel County at Austin Stack Park.

The game will be broadcast live on Setanta Sports Ireland (throw-in 7.30pm).

Meanwhile, Kilalla's Noel Ryan, who was sent off in the All-Ireland Junior Club quarter final against Fulham Irish on 13 January, also came before the Committee.

Ryan had been offered the minimum suspension by the Central Control Committee, and the HC, based on video evidence, decided that he was guilty of a lesser infraction and was cleared.

The reason they say the capacity is 82, 300 and not 82, 500 is because the max allowed into the ground, officially, is the first figure. This is because 200 seats are left vacant in the lower tiers in case people in the upper tier suffer from vertigo.

Floodlit tie to set new record attendance
-  from Setanta.com

A new record attendance for a National League game will be set when Dublin meet Tyrone in next month's historic switching-on of Croke Park's new floodlights.

The current record attendance for a National League game was set in 2003 when Dublin and Armagh drew 53, 000 to Croke Park.

Over 60, 000 tickets have now been sold for the Division 1A opener between the Blues and the O'Neill County at Headquarters.

The tie, which has been the subject of a huge media marketing campaign, may even attract a full house (82, 300) to the Jones' Road venue with a carnival atmosphere the order of the day.

A formal ceremony will mark the switching-on of the new lights, which will also be used for International rugby and soccer matches later in the year.

"The GAA have confirmed that in excess of 60,000 tickets have now been issued for the meeting of Dublin and Tyrone in the Allianz National football league at Croke Park on Saturday, February 3rd," read a GAA statement.

"The remaining tickets are currently on sale through the normal county board and club sources in the participating counties, from the GAA Website, through Ticketmaster Outlets Nationwide and in the Croke Park area from McCaughey's Shop on Clonliffe Road, Benny's in Emmet Street and the Skylon Hotel."

The cost of illuminating Croke Park was a fraction over €5 million with the Irish government contributing €3.65m.

The Dublin-Tyrone clash will be shown exclusively live on Setanta Ireland at 7.00pm on Saturday 3 February.

Gaelic Games Magazine is decent enough - it seems to have a number of the top GAA writers do pieces for it. But anytime I went to buy it I had to go to Easons, nowehere else seemed to seel it.

In relation to the state of the county websites, this was on http://www.setanta.com/portal/sport/gaa

How does your county rate in cyberspace?

Well, we've rated the GAA's sites county-by-county and the results bear little in common with their respective on-field performances.

Tommy Murphy Cup runners-up Leitrim and All-Ireland SFC Qualifier Round One departees Antrim are the best maintained and visually enticing websites, while All-Ireland football champions Kerry have not updated their site since claiming the Sam Maguire Cup in autumn.

We have analysed each county website and given ratings based on their e-communication structure, site appearance, regularity of updates, local and national news diet and other useful features.

The sites have then been placed accordingly in a four-division league, similar to the structure the 2008 National Leagues will take.

Antrim have arguably the best website alongside Leitrim's. The Saffron site has all its club league tables and updates results via the clubs who are obligated to text in scores to a hotline where all the information is collated.

During the championship there were updates on county teams and panels, a diet of national news and a photo gallery.

It also has a special feature - which other counties would do well to copy - a forum is available to users whereby they can question an administration team on a wide range of topical issues.

Tyrone's site, meanwhile, could well challenge the top two in 2007. It has been recently launched and avails all the latest in terms of flash plug-ins etc and a lovely map showing where all the clubs are located. So there are no excuses for being late games.

Counties like Donegal and Derry, have made it into the top tier primarily as a result of their regularity of updates and volume of information, but their aesthetic features somewhat detract from the overall product.

Kerry would have secured a place in Division One but for the fact that once the championship was sown up, information dried up. Perhaps it was overloaded by a 34th All-Ireland crown.

A number of counties would effectively be better off not having a site so bad is their offering. If we play a name and shame game, the likes of Westmeath, Waterford , Cork and even All-Ireland hurling champions Kilkenny are all in dire need of a complete makeover.

London's website, meanwhile, was shut down over abuse received on its discussion forum. While it can still be accessed it has not been updated in months.

A well-informed source within the GAA has however confirmed that the GAA's central website – gaa.ie – an old warhorse, is set to be rebuilt, and a tangent to this initiative will be bringing county sites inline as the GAA moves forward.

GAA Discussion / Re: New Dubs On The Block

Reckon it's crazy to leave Conal Keaney out of any Dubs team...

There's a young guy at St Vincent's called Eoin Brady (full back), he's a steely but mobile defender that reads the game pretty well and holds his position. I reckon Caffrey will have a look at him over the next while.

Alan Brogan was Dublin's best forward this year and has a dynamism that's pretty unique in the modern game. But his brother - Bernard - is arguably even more talented. How he fares at championship level, if he gets a chance, remains to be seen though.

Lilywhites plan new 25,000-capacity stadium - from www.setanta.com

The Kildare county board has outlined its plans to move its county ground to a new purpose built 25,000-capacity stadium.

The Lilywhites will move from St Conleth's Park to a new venue with state-of-the-art dressing rooms, car park and a training pitch.

There are provisional plans for 7,000 seats, a 12,000-capacity covered terrace and an uncovered terrace that will hold 6,000 people, however the number of seats may even be increased.

A presentation on the new complex took place at the Hotel Kadeen in Newbridge on Tuesday night.

The horseshoe shaped design is based on the Liberty Stadium in Swansea, Wales, which is home to the Ospreys rugby team and soccer outfit Swansea City.

A new site will be handed over to Kildare chiefs free of charge under the Newbridge Development plan. It will be located within the new Citygate development at Old Connell, is on the Naas side of Newbridge.

The Liberty Stadium cost STG27 million to build and the new Kildare ground is estimated to be ready for use in two years time.

St Conleth's Park, a six-acre site, is expected to fetch around EUR25 million.

Have they failed to give Frank Browne another year without actually having someone else in the pipeline? What exactly happened at the hurling board meeting last night?

GAA Discussion / What's the story with the Kerry job?
November 24, 2006, 04:20:44 PM
I heard today that the Munster Council is going to give Pat O'Shea a one-year leave of absence to take up the Kerry job.

There was a meeting of the Munster Council in Limerick and a separate meeting of the Kerry executive in Tralee last night but haven't read much of what came out of them.

Any one know?
