Hurling Discussion / Re: All Ireland Qualifiers
July 11, 2015, 10:37:26 PM
That cork v Galway match will be on in thurles alright, on the 26th of July along with Dublin v the losers of tomorrow's match. Everyone assumes it will be Waterford but whoever wins it will hammer Dublin. For Galways sake, I hope it's tipp that wins tomorrow as Galway would struggle to play against Waterford but could give Tipp a rattle. Of course they would have to beat Cork first and it really depends on what Galway turn up in two weeks. Cork owe us a beating that's for sure, and they have serious momentum now as well!!

Agreed ftb, several counties like Meath, cork, Armagh, Tyrone etc etc would beat Galway, I should have added the proviso that a softish draw would be necessary for Galway to make the last round of the qualifiers never mind the quarters.

Decent win for mayo today but so many questions remain. Firstly an obviously too-fired-up Galway side gifted them so many scores from frees from stupid fouling. Will teams like Kerry, Dublin or donegal be that flaithuileach?? Secondly have mayo found another scoring forward to compliment cillian o Connor ?? On the evidence of today, that would  be no imho. The minimum needed for mayo to have a crack at Sam is to find that forward  and let's face it, it's all about Sam for mayo. This drive for five shite is irrelevant. Yeah, it would be nice to achieve it by who cares about provincial honours when the bigger prize is the main goal? I don't remember who won the Connacht championship in 2001 but guess what,? I remember who won the all Ireland title that year😉! Still though a win is a win especially after 10 weeks out of action and the show is on the road again. Mayo should be good enough to win the Connacht title again before the real action starts in August ! As for Galway, there is a bit to go before it can be said that they're coming again but more discipline, a better midfield and shane Walsh back might see them go for a spin through the qualifiers before defeat to 1 of the other members of the big 4, donegal, Kerry and the dubs!!

Yeah I must say I enjoyed that today, the two mannions have added to the team as gave Flynn, daithi Burke  and Harte as well. Having more scoring forwards will only help joe. Add to that the ball winning ability of Donnellan and glynn and the work of Andy Smyth . The mouth waters when you consider Niall Burke, David burke, conor Cooney, David glennon and Niall Healy as well to be added as possible forwards . Defence is where I'd have question marks still. Tan when run at, is suspect abs young hansbury is limited . But to be fair they haven't really put a foot wrong yet. I mean you have Fergal Moore and Ronan Burke waiting to come in as well if needed!!real competition which is good !!

Much as I'd like to see it, I can't see a Galway win. Quite simply Galway won't win enough of the breaking ball in the middle third of the pitch to create enough chances. The mayo players are better in the physical stakes here to win the "dirty" ball and as someone said earlier the Galway forwards can't score without the ball.
Someone made the analogy earlier of the club championship being over valued but you can't really compare the football and hurling titles, from a Galway perspective . The hurling ones have been won with only 2 matches after the co championship, similarly the co teams at minor and u21 have win their national titles after 2 matches. And damn all good that's been really with a staggering 25 titles won in these grades since the last senior all Ireland title .
At least in the club football, they play a provincial title before the all Ireland championship so this is harder won in my opinion.
The more accurate analogy may be senior co teams, west of the Shannon closing the deal in all Ireland finals. Galway hurlers and mayo footballers are the obvious examples of this but I hope that 1 of them puts this sad indictment to an end and soon. Mayo are a lot closer to doing this obviously and they will take the first step towards this in a months time. Mayo by 3 or 4 points !!

You'd want to acquire few tricks to be a modern day treasurer of a gaa club I can tell ya😄😄. My own club in Galway Ahascragh- Fohenagh were beaten in the co final on Saturday. I was worried about this match before it as I had seen the body language of both teams after the drawn match and it was clear that the cappataggle lads were delighted to have a second chance. They scored 12 points to our lads 1 in the second half to win it easily . Our lads had a great start, leading by 1-04 to 0-01 but we're only leading by 3 at the half and the rest is history. The a/f team is relatively young still so they could still do it in the future. Another huge crowd at the match, easily 3000 people which is impressive, maybe hurling fans in Galway are so desperate to see a hurling match that they turned out in numbers on Saturday. Desperate to see a match because there is no SENIOR HURLING on at the moment there, but of course "sin scĂ©al eile"!!

The Leinster council ar happy enough to make money out of galways matches though, all of tgem being in leinster of course. Galway should pull out of leinster altogether so it might force the issue. It's also a myth that Galway are a powerhouse at underage. Winning titles after two matches hardly entitles you to that status, I would have thought. Will be interesting what the gaa hq have to say about the leinster councils decision. As for the Galway championship, it's turned into a farce with portumna waiting in the final now for the last 3 weeks with the quarter final on the other side yet to be decided. No leadership at all from the co board with the full time secretary deafening by his silence. Then again certain members of the board were apparently the ones who advised turloughmore, that all was in order in the first place. On a lighter side, my home club are in the replay of the co intermediate final on Saturday . Please God they will finish it off this time having been hauled back in injury time last Sunday. While I may be treasurer of my club here in cork, I will be among the hordes invading Dugan park should our lads win on sat. Can't wait for it!!

Good grinding win for leinster in France .intetesting that shane Horgan is not wearing a poppy, I would have thought that any analyst or presenter on British tv would have no choice in the matter!!

As much as I admire the greatest hurling manager of all time, managing the greatest team of all time , he is out of order with his comments about Barry Kelly. Kelly is one of the few refs actually blowing the whistle for fouls.gavin letting eveything go suited kk very well and they could foul practically with impunity then. Mind you I don't think that michael kavanagh would have done his county any favours with his revelations about how kk play the ref. according to kav on the Sunday game, he said that kk players will wait to see how the ref is blowing up fouling in a game and then play accordingly. Makes sense in a way but the gaa should pull Cody on his comments . They are only designed to influence the choice of refs for kk matches and should not be tolerated. With gavin letting a lot go, it was only natural for both teams to be pulling and dragging with the free hand and in fairness, it was much easier for donal Og with zoom in cameras to be focusing on those type of fouls. Gavin had only a split second to make his decisions on the day!

today Kerry were the southern version of Donegal even if it was for just one day!  They had to do it to win I suppose but what an awful match and puke football wins out! A pity that football loses out as the supposed aristocrats of the game are reduced to blanket defence to win an all Ireland! 1 big mistake ended up being decisive and I felt sorry for Durcan but unfortunately for him they are the margins that decide games like this! well done Kerry I suppose, must be great seeing your team winning another title  allowing for despicable characters like Keane and while I agree with star's sentiments, that was not the time and place to have a dig at Brolly!  Only a fool would write Kerry off  in any year as they delight in showing these experts to be wrong again and again. Then again they are virtually guaranteed entry to the Ai quarter final every year due  to the  weak province they are in and that's not their fault  either to be fair. Thank God for hurling!

Will be a no vote in the end all right, the scare tactics will make most of the undecideds stay with the "safe" option. A pity but when there's been nothing but a constant stream of threats and warnings from financial institutions, establishment politicians and 95% of the media in the last 2 weeks then what other outcome could be expected? I presume that there won't be another referendum on this matter in our lifetime anyway ? ( 50 years)??

Jesus the worst collision I ever saw on a hurling field was a couple of years (maybe last year) in Thurles when Kilkenny hurled Galway in the league. Walter Walsh absolutely wrote off Fergal Moore. It was a scary, scary collision, and I thought Moore was badly broke up. Walsh never flinched. I'd say the physical stuff would be well up his alley.
I wad at that match and remember the sight of fergals mother running onto the pitch to see her son. I also remember the comment from a prominent kk official at half time to the Galway board chairman.....after inquiring as to his well being, he said that Moore had. "Looked for it" . A poor comment from him considering the way Moore was brought off to hospital. Walsh has had 1 good match for the cats and that's the replay 2 years ago. He's done nothing since in my opinion and I would expect Padraig Walsh and or taggy  Fogarty to play the next time.

Best final I have ever seen and I was delighted to see that last free go wide to give us another match. I thought that Barry Kelly was harsh on kk to be honest, Eoin Larkin should have been awarded a free early in the match and both penalties were wrongly awarded considering that the offences were outside the box, therefore justice was done when they were both missed. Only 2 players have scored penalties now since the rule was amended, joe canning and Patrick Horgan so it is possible to score them even if the advantage to the fouled team is less now. I thought that Eddie Brennan was stupid to come out with his comments about Kelly though even if there is an element of truth about it. It came across all parochial and his objectivity would be questioned now IMHO .I would fully expect kk to win the replay now, with a different ref and so many players who can improve from Sundays display. Both fennellys and wally Walsh were poor in my opinion so expect to see changes there for the replay. Huge credit to tipp though, the players who had not really lit it up before the final, lar, noel mc grath, played well along with bubbles and seamus callinan. Bonner doesn't have a bad game ever it seems and if he ever got injured you'd have to worry about tipp. I would love to attend the replay as the atmosphere will be truly amazing but the match won't live up to the standards of the first one, I would say. Roll on sept 27th.
