Walsh rejects plea to reinstate ó hAilpín

By DAMIAN LAWLOR

Sunday December 05 2010

A DELEGATION of Cork players made a direct appeal to team management to have Seán óg ó hAilpín reinstated to the panel, but Denis Walsh and his selectors are sticking by their decision.

There had been unrest in the squad over the axing of ó hAilpín, leading to fears that the manager was facing a revolt, especially among the more senior members of the panel. These fears were heightened when just five players turned up for a fitness assessment.

However, this has since been explained away. A number of players were on holidays while those tests were taking place. In addition, Sarsfields players were in Munster club duty and both Na Piarsaigh and Glen Rovers hurlers were in domestic under 21 action.

But just a week after the assessment, full-back Eoin Cadogan and others sought a meeting with manager Denis Walsh to state their upset at the dropping of ó hAilpín and seeking to discuss the situation further. The prospect of the experienced ó hAilpín returning as an advisor was also mooted.

The manager agreed to the meeting but the Sunday Independent understands exchanges were extremely short. The players were told that the decision to drop the half-back had been made for purely hurling reasons and that it was his remit to make the calls regarding team matters and selection. With no further questions being presented, the get-together was then called to a halt.

Walsh has thus far refused to make any comment on the matter and the only public utterances came from Donal óg Cusack last week. "Seán Óg Ó hAilpín was a very good friend of mine, an inspiration not just to me but to a lot of people in Cork and all over the country. I'm just very sad over it," Cusack said.

"He was a friend and inspiration and my overriding emotion when I think about it -- and people who know me have asked -- I tell them the same. I feel, inside of me, very sad about it."

A second fitness assessment for the squad was held last week and it has allayed fears that there would be any further reaction to ó hAilpín's removal.

There was a much higher attendance at this gathering, with experienced centre half-back Ronan Curran attending despite fears he might retire. The long-serving O'Connor twins, Ben and Jerry, were also present.

The Sunday Independent has also learned that there has not been an approach made to footballers Ciarán Sheehan and Aidan Walsh to join up with the hurlers in 2011.

Meanwhile, Sheehan has rejected reports he will resume his AFL career with Carlton Blues ahead of the 2012 Australian Rules season. Instead, he will remain in Cork and finish his sports marketing studies at CIT. He will also link up with the senior footballers again following knee surgery.

"I had surgery to repair some cartilage in my knee but it's nothing major," he said. "I'll be back in training when we return from the team holiday to South Africa in the new year, ready to focus on the coming season."

Hurling Discussion / Was Cody right to start Shefflin?

It was always a risk. Even if he had lasted the 70, he would have spent the day avoiding tackles.
A physical game on a wet day is not the place to carry a player.
Maybe it was a sign of Cody under estimating Tipperary?

Did ye see Tommy Walsh today?
He had the horizontal bar removed from his helmet.
Which is against the new rules.

Leahy fears sideline clash could haunt Tipp

Tipperary legend John Leahy fears that the sideline altercation between Liam Sheedy and Brian Cody earlier this year could come back to haunt the Premier County.

The rival managers squared up to each other on the Semple Stadium sideline during Tipp's National League victory in March, and Leahy believes Kilkenny could use the incident as motivation in Sunday's All-Ireland final.

Cody pointed a finger at Sheedy, who responded by pushing the Kilkenny manager in the chest. But the pair shook hands at the final whistle and dismissed the flashpoint after the game.

"Kilkenny's performances over the last few years show that they are the best team in the country," 1989 and '91 All-Ireland winner Leahy said.

"On top of that, also, I'm a bit concerned with the Tipp-Kilkenny match that happened in Thurles when Liam Sheedy had a go at Cody. Will that come back to haunt Tipperary hurling for the final? That'll give Kilkenny a huge incentive to play against Tipperary.

"The ideal situation from a Kilkenny point of view would be that if you did want to do five-in-a-row, you would want to beat Tipp to do it. Living on the border (Mullinahone), I hear huge rivalry there.

"It's great, but it's intense as well and I'm sure every Kilkenny player would think if you're going to do five-in-a-row, then why not cap it off by beating Tipperary, one of their main rivals?"

Why can't people simply respect the wishes of the organisers and stay off the field as requested?

Maybe because most of these people want to keep the long standing tradition of celebrating the win on the field?
There was a long standing tradition of sitting on the roof of the Hogan.
Should we still do it?

we found 3/4 wee irish bars in a wee side street just off La Ramblas. There was a Mcdonalds & KFC at the bottom of the street (La Ramblas sie). they were pretty decent.
Why bother going to Barcelona if you are going to go on a crawl of Irish bars and eat American fast food?  ;D

Hurling Discussion / Colin Lynch vs. Waterford in 1998
August 03, 2010, 09:09:41 PM
I haven't seen this footage in years.
This is when Lynch went berserk at the throw in of the Munster final replay.
Hitting both Waterford midfielders (Tony Browne and Peter Queally) and even Ollie Baker - his own man!  ;D

He got suspended for an off the ball hit later on in the game, but in reality it was what he did in this clip that marked his cards.

Great memories...

Hard luck Limerick.
The ref rode them, but these are the breaks the big counties always get.  ::)

Quote from: FTJC on March 31, 2007, 01:15:52 PMGer Farragher is a soft-baller and wouldn't be a massive loss. He rarely if ever wins a 50-50 ball and always stands away from the action hoping to pick up the breaking ball instead of getting in there and making things happen. If the only player thats a bit grumpy is Farragher i can live with that.
How times change.
Farragher has already picked up two player of the month awards and has been a match winner for Galway this year.
Every other county would like a "soft-baller " like him.  :D

It's all a bit of a blur . I think Cormac Bonner was missing a few.
The Viking was missing plenty of teeth.
He was one of the first players to wear a helmet with a faceguard.

Is there any rule to stop you removing the timber on the inner part of the hurley bas and replacing it tennis racquet strings?
