He lived at Cuba Avenue in Banagher, right enough.  A row of houses where lived Maura McHugh (daughter of Clare legend John Joe 'Goggles' Doyle), Mannions (Roy), Reddins and Fogartys.  Duignans (Michael) is across the road.

Tony's contribution to Offaly is that he trained St Rynagh's to several SHC title wins in the 1960s and 70s, promoting a brand of quick, direct hurling that defeated the 'traditional' savagery that used pass for hurling prior to that.

May he Rest in Peace.

I often intended to start a topic on this.

Duffry Rovers (Wexford)
Bride Rovers (Cork)
Killavilla (Offaly), but they've now amalgamated with Ballyskenagh

Are there many clubs that have the 'tricolour' jersey?(like offaly)
In tyrone we have 2, carrickmore & kildress. Is this common in other counties?

St Thomas' (Galway) are red and blue, but that probably reflects the old Peterswell and Kilchreest clubs who amalgamated to form St Thomas'.

Abbeyknockmoy wear red and blue.

Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry wear blue and green, but the old Abbey-Duniry club wore white and green and I presume Tynagh wore blue.

So green and blue together seems almost always reflect an amalgamation (Murroe/Boher being another).

A few sashes in Galway hurling - Meelick-Eyrecourt, Loughrea, Kilconieron.

And Killimor wear black and amber vertical stripes.

Is there any red, white and blue or those colours in any order apart from New York??

Ahascragh/Fohenagh in Galway are red, white and blue.
Ahascragh were red and white and Fohenagh were blue and white and they amalgamated round about 2002 I think.

Murroe-Boher are an amalgamation though, and the blue/green colours represent the combination.

Murroe in Limerick are blue and green.

5,731 at the Tipperary hurling Final.  That's a mere 1% of the county's population.  Where was everybody?
Tipp has more like 150 000 people
It has too. Lousy maths on my part. D'oh!  Still it's a very small proportion of the population of a hurling mad county.

2,910 at the Limerick hurling Final, according to the 'Daily Cork'.  That's a shocking figure, for a county with a massive population, and who hurling-wise are approaching the crest of a wave.

Offaly football had 5,314 (and was screened live on TG4)
Offaly hurling had 6,312.

In a county with a population of c70k.

What age were you? - 9/10
Who was playing, what year  ? Offaly v Donegal 1972/3 Grounds Tournament
Who did you go with ?  Da
Do you remember anything about it ? Running  on with me little autograph book when the teams were kicking in and getting autographs from Martin Furlong, Paddy McCormack, Mick Ryan, Martin Heavey, Willy Bryan and Tony McTeague

What age were you? 8 (about to turn 9)
Who was playing, what year  ? Offaly v Kerry, 1980 All Ireland Semi Final (the 4-15 to 4-10 one
Who did you go with ? My father.
Do you remember anything about it ?  Hardly anything about the match. Remember parking in the Phoenix Park, then discovering we forgot the milk for the tea, spotting a family from town and Dad borrowing "a sup of milk for the young fella".
Dad buying me a crepe paper hat around Mountjoy Square.
Thinking the pitch was fierce small (I'd expected the pitch to be at least twice the size of the pitches I'd been to at home).
Dad preparing me for the worst pre-match "shure you won't be disappointed if they're beaten by the mighty Kerry today" and being devastated when Offaly lost.
A Kerryman near us in the Lower Hogan shouting "Aboy Jacko" and me thinking it was funny.
Thinking it was odd that everybody applauded the Kerry player as he was stretchered off the pitch.
Going for a walk up to the Upper Hogan after the match (during the Minor hurling replay that took place after Offaly v Kerry).
Traffic crawling on the way home.
Being fascinated with the match programme.  It was the first of hundreds.

Sounds like Canice is an awkward grip-changer like "Taggy and Welter" so.

John Jo Farrell had a fine game at corner forward - I like his style of hitting the ball - very similar to Taggy and Welter, and if John Jo can turn out to be half the player they are he'll be one to watch.

On the basis of last Saturday, and last Saturday alone, I think MLR would beat Portumna by about eight points.

Of course, all the other stuff then gets added to the mix – tradition, big match nerves, local attitudes, Joe Canning, psychology, Croke Park,  - but are all those factors enough make Portumna the raging favourites that they are.

I am not au fait with the goings on of the Carlow County championship, but is it possible that Kilcormac-Killoughey (2012) are the only team to beat MLR since the Rangers were beaten by St Mullins in the 2010 County Final?

And it will be hard to beat Diarmuid Byrne's point -  off the hurl and when it was most needed - for the rest of the year. Inspirational.

Fair play to the Carlow boys but I suppose winning the Final will be a bridge too far.

I don't see why. Loughgeil won the All-Ireland two years ago so MLR can take on the heavyweights and win.

JD came on as a sub in the 2007 Leinster final and started the Leinster Finals in 2008, '09 and '10, so holds medals as a player for those years.  He lost his place in the team prior to the All-Ireland Finals of '08 and '09 so won All-Ireland medals as a non-playing sub in those two years.

I am guessing you are asking why JD holds more All-Ireland medals than Leinster medals.  He doesn't.  He was a non-playing sub for the Leinster finals of 2006 and 2011.  Overall JD holds six Leinster medals (2006 - 2011 inclusive) and five All-Ireland medals.
