GAA Discussion / Re: Canavan gone
September 04, 2013, 09:18:11 AM
Canavan took this team from mid table Div 4 to 3rd in Div 3 , so I say job well done. We struggled against Cavan, but did beat a soon to be Div 1 team. Fermanagh didn't seem to learn from the first day against Cavan, and Cavan did learn, however when it comes to the crunch, Cavan have better players. Canavan did seem to lack a bit of tactical awareness in some games, however his professionalism etc.. added greatly to the Fermanagh set up.

One major problem within the county is the youth setup. We really don't have any sort of decent youth policy. We have hardly won a game at minor and U-21's for years. We need to take a look at our neighbours in Cavan and use that as a blueprint.

I would have loved Canavan to stay as I have no confidence in the county board to select another manager. I fear we will go for the super cheap option or some mate of the selection panel.

Personally I would like us to either go with Peter McGinnity or a young up and coming manager from outside the county, however I suspect we will have an uninspired appointment, a raft of retirements and a return to Div 4, but i hope I am proved wrong.

GAA Discussion / Re: Cavan vs Fermangh....Again

Well done Cavan, they were way the better team. Better players, playing a system that really worked for them. The work at underage looks like it may soon start to pay off at senior level. Fermanagh could do with taking a look at what you done at underage and use it as a blue print for ourselves.

With regards the ref, it was probably the worst display of refereeing I have ever seen, I honestly wouldn't let him referee an Under-12 game after that display. Fermanaghs discipline was poor but alot of this came from poor frustation at the ref and a feeling that the ref was bias, which to be honest seemed to be the case from were I was sitting (this is no excuse but, they still need to be disciplied).

But good luck to Cavan, I think you have a great shout against Derry and it could turn out to be a long enough summer for you's.

Great game in casement,  think we just edged it but a draw is fair enough.

From a fermanagh point view, it was very encouraging considering we were missing both our starting midfielders.  Work rate and effort could not be faulted.

It was worth every penny of the entrance fee!!

So who played well for either team left_peg? Who done the scoring, I have a feeling that will be our big issue this year (just like other years I suppose).

In bad need of a goal scorer, still think the Clint deal will happen, hopefully get another striker too but.

Without a commitment to buy, I don't really know the value in this deal. If they don't have to buy him, I think I would just keep him, we don't have too many strikers at the minute.

It will be good to see Morgan play, and see how Downing gets on at left back. Hope Gerrard plays on the right to see how he gets on, but no doubt it will be Hendo.

Looks like Carroll could finally be away to West Ham too.

BBC are reporting that Stoke City have made a £5m bid for Charlie Adam.

Hopefully thats true.

I would be shocked if that was the team to start on Sunday, I would expect about 4 changes before kick off, just hope the unit isn't one of them.

So where are you playing Little and D Keenan then??

Assuming people are fit, it would be:

Ronnie

Bogue
Owens/Lyons
Woods
Conor Q
Clucker
Tommy

Lyons/Owens
Sherry

Little
Keenan (very impressive there last night)
Kelly
Sean Q
Seamus Q
A.N Other

A.N other to come from Eamon, Corrigan, Ward etc.

In my opinion the half back line now only has one place up for grabs.
McCluckey is the CHB with C Quigley the other WHB.
That leaves Tommy and Damien fighting it out for the other position.
We have a good strength in depth in the WHB position.

Little and Keenan would be a great combination as WHF's.

I hope i am wrong but am unsure whether we will see Marty back for a while.
We have to develop other options there as a partner for Sherry.

Does anybody know if the university players can now play for there counties in the semi finals??

If everybody was fit I would guess McElroy will go wing half back and Kelly wing half forward, we really lack strength and size in the half forward line and Kelly might help with that.

Lyons will partner James at midfield.

So what did people think of last nights game?

Some points from last night
1) Is Owens still good/fast enough for full back (Maybe an option at full forward should seamy not be there).
2) Bogue and Woods seem to be going well in the corners
3) Conor Q prob our best player at the minute
4) The other half back spot is still up for grabs
5) Lyons looks good around the middle, another option for full back but
6) D Keenan seems to have started to fulfill his potential
7) Two wing half forward spots still there for the taking
8) Sean Q seems to be carrying pounds and Ward failed to get out in front often enough
9) Seamy is still the key!!!

All in all very encouraging but.

Dont know what game you were at?? he turned the game on its head.Fermanagh offered nothing in attack until he entered the fray. the whole side evolves around him from what i seen..Tyrone were beat 1-06 to 0-3 during the period when he came on so a treble scores defeat in the second half im no mathimatician but id say if you dont get carried away with that impact it must take a fair bit to get you excited....

Exactly what I was thinking, he changed the game completely. He gives us an aggressive focal point which inspires the whole team. What is worrying is how bad we were up front in the 1st half when he wasn't there.

Best for Fermanagh was probably Bogue, Woods, Conor Q, Sherry, Keenan and obviously Seamus. Keenan especially seems to have got alot stronger during his year out.

I was disappointed with Owens, he was never blessed with pace, but he seems to have got even slower, hopefully this improves as he get fitter. Eamon also still seems to be of the pace, but like Owens I suppose fitness is probably still an issue there.

When we throw in some stronger players such as Kelly, McElroy and McGrath and then also the speed of Little, we certainly have a team good enough to give most teams a run for there money!
