The rules aren't helping them.

By accident or design, over the past decade, CCC have tried out every combination of concurrent vs prior reserve championships, named 13 vs/plus SFC ineligibility.

And you know what.... The strongest teams in the SFC have continued to be the strongest teams in the reserve championships too.

Which really is how it should be.

Yeah, that's it. I've been involved with reserves as a young player and a nearly retired player and you can't get it 100% right. I always thought 10 minutes at the end of a SFC/IFC shouldn't stop you playing the following year. Personally getting it over before SFC starts worked best because if you started with a group of players then 4 of them come on in the SFC you're getting hammered in a semi final or whatever.

If you have 3 teams but only enter a team in the RFC not the PRFC that's not fair on other sides. The strongest teams in SFC should be winning the PRFC and then the RFC will have the better semi retired players too. That's just football. I think the Fr Davies/Felix Darby for the teams that went out of the championship was a good idea, keeps those lads playing for another few weeks.

From a  Pat Mc Eneany interview last week;

"A goalkeeper taking a kick-out, can a goalkeeper soccer dribble the ball out and without taking the ball into his hands, kick the ball 40-yards up the field? Yes, he can.

So what he's saying is., a goalkeeper ,  instead of lumping it upfield off the tee, can knock the ball off the tee, dribble it as far as he wants, as long as he doesn't pick it up?

Yes
Rule 2.7a
The player taking a kick-out may kick the ball more than once before any other player touches it but may not take the ball into his hands.

Went for a short kick out once and got too much of the tee, ball barely went the distance to let full back get it - so I could of ran out and hoofed it away before the forward got in? Ref would have blew that 100%.

A ref that may not know that rule, like the rest of the players and supporters it seems on a lot of rules... you can actually bounce the ball as many times as you want, sort of ;) another crazy rule

You can basketball dribble the ball isn't that right. At an U11 match last night the ref blew a lad for 2 bounces - he palmed the ball down in front of himself and collected it, took 4 steps and bounced it and he blew him up. Thought it was harsh.

I suppose the kick out one is similar to hurling where if you miss the puck out you can pull it on the ground.

Tbh I have always thought a recurring theme of the players who made minor early was that their senior careers didn't last as long or definitely they dropped off a good bit earlier in their career.

McCartan was phenomenal at 19 ish but I would say at 28 or 29 wasn't as good. Paddy McKeever would have dropped off a bit early too.

He got battered playing club football too. Diarmuid Marsden played senior as a minor too. In the hogan win in 1993 he was just class.

this is one are stats dont tell the whole truth  if derry had to play a 14? at minor it probably says more about th dery setup than mcNicholl.
another way of judging it is players who played senior on the same day like Benny coulter or paddy McBrearty and indeed Wille joe padden( and a few more)

the best minor player i have seen was Kyle coney Tyrone. looked a dead cert to be a superstar but it just didnt really happen for him

Derry got to 3 AI minor finals 80,81 and 83 winning the latter with DMcN as captain so I would say they had a fairly good setup at that time and for a 14 year old to be part of that also says a whole lot about how good he was.

Or maybe playing for Ireland at 19 and getting an allstar at the same age says more about the Ireland and and Allstar setups than it does about McNicholl also.

I get the 3 years, but 5 years is surely wrong. With him missing minors in his last year at school in the North that would put him at 13 when he was called in because he could be 17 or just turned 18 when he captained the team. 5 years at macrory would only be 4 years at minor too. He'd be playing minor in 2nd year if that's right. He must of been a serious monster in 3rd year to play Macrory in a winning team. Easy to write off playing young in a bad team.

James McCartan played in 3 out of 4 macrory finals I think (1988 went to a 2nd replay), won 1 and a hogan and got to 2 all ireland finals at minor winning one. I think he was only 18 or 19 on the international rules too.

Crazy in this day and age. . . you have easy access to all broadcast sports and can see the successful broadcasting formats.

You audition lads for personality and give them some media training so they can handle themselves properly on screen without losing their opinions and backbone.

The fact there isn't a recap style show like MNF with proper analysis and a legend of the game as a guest to add some extra insight is ridiculous as far as I can see.

Even some kind of mish mash magazine show presented by the 2 Johnnies (or someone like that) lacing a bit of craic through the GAA scene would be deadly.

They have so much they can do and they just won't it's so frustrating!

Parkinson said he pitched a mid week show to them and they didn't even acknowledge him. RTE have a lot of programming to fit in but you would think an hour long show would be cheap enough to make and you'd have a decent audience. Look at the amount of GAA podcasts going and doing well - you'd think they could get a couple of hours a week out even with decent audience numbers.

Has anyone made the shift to electric cars and what's your advice on it?

Been thinking about going that way for a while for the wife's car but not sure what to do. Don't see the point in the lexus/toyota type hybrid at the minute but maybe the plug in hybrid type would be better. Couple of family members have the Kia Nero and Sportage and seem to be happy with them.

Don't have the cash for a Tesla but had looked at some of the VW electric cars. Don't know anyone with them though.
I have a Kia XCeed plug in hybrid. It's a work company car so didn't buy it but I find it great. Get about 50km range on the electric charge.
The wife does about 60km/38miles to work and back and was thinking it would suit her better, but I actually do less. It's just the constant in and out to kids sports that would kill it for me. I like the idea of the petrol engine as back up.

It's a strange one for me that Gallagher is so system oriented and risk averse, but asked the young lad to play fly goalie.  If he wanted to price in a bit of jeopardy, a few high balls into the square would have been a better bet.  Watching McKaigue sky a shot and the goalie having a shot blocked after telegraphing it, both would have been better slung in to the back stick. Galway couldn't deal with it against Armagh and you can be sure Kerry will be bombing them in.
This is one thing that has annoyed me from looking at football lately. I understand keepers have to change going forward and you have to be much more comfortable on the ball than in previous years but there's some teams at a point where players can't risk a forward pass or a shot that's not nailed on but you expect the keeper to thread a pass through a crowd from the tee and then he's the only one taking a risk by going forward with the ball. Lynch didn't do much wrong on Saturday but was made look bad. Most keepers aren't up to that no matter what they say or think.
I've seen keepers on twitter championing Ethan Rafferty, saying we can play out surely, but he's proving that if you're going that way it's a midfielder you need in that position not a keeper that played midfield for his club at U16s.

My main concern about Goalkeeping is the goalkeeping coach. He was a poor keeper when playing for Derry, imo, so I'm not sure he's the man to have in there as the GK coach. I could be wrong, good players don't always make good coaches so I guess the opposite can also be true.

Who's the goalkeeper coach?

Going to Fota Island for a few nights with family. Anyone ever been? If its crap don't tell me  ;D

Where should we go and explore in Cork City and along the coast?

Went a couple of years ago with the kids, pre covid, and it was great. We stayed in one of the houses on the site but had full access to the pool etc. We booked the VIP tour for the kids in the zoo and it was some of the best money I've ever spent. Kids loved it, got to feed the penguins, monkeys and giraffes. I got to feed the lions and tigers, kids were too small to throw a steak or fish over the fence. We didn't tour about that much though, into Middleton and Cobh and went to the cinema in Cork one wet day. I'd recommend Ferret and Lee for food just outside the Jameson distillery.

Dances with Wolves is brilliant.  I also loved Costner in For the Love of the Game and Mr Brooks.

Field of Dreams is a superb film. Also loved 13 Days (has Bruce Greenwood, another actor I like), No Way Out, The Untouchables and even Oliver Stone's ludicrous JFK.

The less said about the likes of Robin Hood, the better, even if Alan Rickman is good fun in it. :)

That's a blast from the past - haven't watched it in years. Used to watch it all the time

What did we think of Richard Arnold's impromptu meeting with the fans at the pub? I thought he spoke some sense and seemed genuine. Felt videoing and releasing it was a poor move and will in reality make the club far more insular.

I thought he came out of it well. He seems more grounded and self aware than Woodward. I don't think you could disagree with much of what he said. I'm prepared to give him and Murtough a chance but they have a hard job to correct 10 years of failed management while being held back by the Glazers at the same time.

It would have been better not to have released the videos in the way they did, can't see that type of meeting happening again. It will be interesting to see if it puts Arnold's position in trouble with the Glazers.
