I'd never regard Mort as a complete footballer but he is very good at what he can do.
He is neither tall nor aggressive enough to mix it one to one with most defenders. Up to the start of the present championships season, I was honestly convinced that O'Mahony was totally clueless and had lost whatever marbles he used to have.
For me at any rate, his use of Conereen is a case in point. Against Tyrone last year, he was left isolated against Gormley who was let batter him all through the game. McMenamin nearly creased him when he wound up across the Tyrone goal line. The ref continued to turn a blind eye to what Tyrone were doing to him all throughout the game.
Now, I think all of that was outside Mort's control and there's no use in moaning about it now but the manager should have spotted that hoofing high balls in on top of him in a two man ff line was never going to produce dividends.
Those outside him kept this up and Mort got loads of abuse form Mayo fans for having such an ineffective game. This  was most unfair in my opinion; the fault lay elsewhere. There wasn't a semblance of a Plan A, never mind a plan B that day.
JOM appears to be far more with it this year and Mort's style of play doesn't seem to fit in with his game plan.
When Ciaran Mac was there to deliver inch perfect ground passes to him, he could sling points over consistently.  He used to run out to meet the ball and get so low he would slide along the ground to pick it up. No wonder he got his All Star when Mac was there to feed him.
O'Mahony seems to be going for height in his FF line and Mortimer doesn't fit into this plan.

Semi final in 1996 would have to be there
I'd agree and I'd add the 2006 semi to that.

It's best to let sleeping dogs goats lie, as the old saying goes. I'm gonna try and not upset the goat any more and with luck, this promise might last a week.
You have a Lar-free week now, Sligonian. (I hope)

Was wonderin what happened the old thread. It was bubbling along nicely. Lar had concocted some fable about a goat coveting his neighbour's cabbage. Tom P was the cabbage and Sligonian the goat. Sligonian then, with some justification it must be said, told Lar his logic was arseways and it was really Mayo who were sneaking into the neighbours garden and making off with the finest of the cabbage heads. Oh, and Sigonian called Lar a clown. Over to ye lads.

Moysider, something tells me you are havin' a real sloooow day!
Come to think of it, so am I or I wouldn't keep going on with this sort of stuff.

On the Galway/Sligo thread a short while ago, Sligo made an epic contribution; it was remarkable even by his own standards.
He had kinda figured out that if Sligo had Tom Parsons and if Eamonn O'Hara had three brothers, Sligo could do the business.
I couldn't resist joining in and I suggested gently that he was spouting moolagumby.
If all of Sligo thought the same way as him, they'd be turning up expecting to get bet and would have had their excuses made up before a ball was thrown in.
I told him that TP wasn't going to show up in a Sligo jersey and O'Hara wasn't  going to have three brothers  playing, so all Sligo should do what to make the best use of what they had and get on with it.
Even a goat should know that there's no point in looking into the neighbouring garden and coveting what he sees there. If he doesn't make do with what is available to him in his own, he'll get nowhere.
BTW; I accept the fact that I am a clown. Given Sligonian's own qualifications, I could not challenge his opinion. ;D

If its just a broken finger then thats not so bad even though I heard it was his wrist aswel. Still I seriously doubt he'll play.. Barry is a big loss. He hasn't been getting enough credit for the way he has been playing and the point about him deflecting attention away from O'Shea is certainly a valid one.

In that sense, I have to say I'm liking this idea of Tom Parsons at FF. If he doesn't work out I feel we are interchangable enough to bring him out to midfield and bring in Ronladson or someone like that. But at least it keeps the game plan the same and it means that all the attention won't be focused on O'Shea. Also, I think Pasrons has an eye for goal. Definitely agree with keeping C Mort on the bench. He seemed really hungry the last day coming on, which is a good asset to have, and anyway Kilcoyne is playing pretty well.

I know Ronnie played corner forward before but he looked out of his depth in Tralee against Kerry earlier this year in the league. I thought he had a terrible game but it was very early in the season.
Would you throw Austie in there? He works very well 'on the loop' and hooking it over the bar off either foot... I know people will be harping on aout pace and not being up to championship, but with O Shea there to break and win ball it could work for AOM and killer each side.
With MJ Mort in reserve as an impact sub.

I'd  be worried if he sticks Ronny in for Barry in a straight swop. There must be 7 o r 8 inches between their heights. Whatever game plan has been used would need a big change. It's tough on Barry; I thought he was improving all the time. I hope there's nothing major wrong with him. Mort could be useful if he's not left on his own to fight it out with a bigger man.

I think it is the best option available but it could be open to abuse.
Who decides what an 'independent' witness means?
If the practice becomes widespread, you could have an assload of 'independent' witnesses coming forward.

QuoteMan and there I was thinking all the mayo lads hated me, damn it, what more do I have to do to get you to hate me?

I'd hate it if you were to stay away from the board so I couldn't wind you up.  ;D

QuoteThere is a excellent thread on HS at the minute that shows im not alone.

I'd say you'll find a lot more people with your mentality (and mental age), and attitude on hoganstand than you wlll on gaaboard.
So I think you may as well treat yourself, and make that your new home.

No harm having 2 homes  ;), I could fight back but OMS would end up deleting this thread aswell. So I think I'll be the better man and not stoop to yer level.

Thanks sniper, im only human.

It's good to see you have cooled down a bit and have returned to the fold.
I would never deliberately set out to insult you and I just thought you were a bit bored out there in Saudi and was just trying to stir things up a bit to pass the time.
I knew the Connacht final was well and truly over and I thought it no harm to let you drag it off topic and give us a blast about Tom Parsons and everything else you get worked up about.
For the record, I have the best of time for Sligo and for all the Sligo lads on here.

I had expcted him to post on the Sligo club thread at some stage today so maybe he did get a ban?
Well, I was sorta winding him up a bit, if you follow me and I thought he had got thick and took it down.  He could do that, couldn't he?
After all, he started it so maybe he can remove it s well.
I really would be sorry if he feels I had insulted him. Hell, I don't think you could insult him as he keeps rising to the bait time after time.
I hope he doesn't forget to return real soon; I kinda miss him already. ;D

It's a spancil where I and my goats came from.

[Edit]  Just checked - neither word is in the concise OED.
Trivial fact: The concise OED has only six English words that begin with "lang".

Is one of these "langer"??

:D Sadly, no.  But I should mention that mine is about 30 years old.

Lang syne
Language
Languid
Languish
Languor
QuoteLangur (an Asian long-tailed monkey - maybe this is the one they've confused with "langer").

Nah; langur is the way it'd be said if you had a thick Cork accent. I think the clever chappies at the OED go tit right. No confusion. I just hope the langurs with the tails asren't upset by any comparisons.

Janey, I thought it was the other way around.
I got a call from the brother late last night to tell me that he had read online that the game had been fixed for August 9 at HQ nd I didn't bother to aske him where he read this; I just assumed that this was the latest news.
I wonder how current the info on gaa.ie is.  I can'tget back to the bro until he returns home this evening.

There is absolutely zero chance I would reckon of this happening.

The manager has a very fixed game-plan in place which would just not suit McDonald, or the balance of the team. I could not see a manager of the experience of JOM taking that risk now.

What everybody remembers is 2006 against Dublin. We are 3 years down the line. Sadly McD is 3 years older and the chances of him making a sudden impact at this level without a season's training behind him is most unlikely.

I'm afraid I have to agree with you Barney.
But I would go further and say that it's not the game plan itself that caused the dropping of Ciaran. I think it's a personality matter and either man, staunch Mayo lads both, would find it hard to get on with the other.
I reckoned the controversy would continue for a long, long time and here we are, more than two years later and the issue is still very much alive. Sadly, I don't see any possibility of Mac returning; both men would have to undergo a personality detox course to allow that to happen.

It can be done tho if for greater good of the team ... rem last year and Stephen O'Neill

Longruns is right but with Tyrone, the manager and the panel supported O'Neill's comeback. Also, Jack O'Connor and a good few members of his squad had their own differences in the lead up the 2006 final. But they kept them strictly in-house until the job was done.
But I see little point in dwelling on the past, what was done was done and we can only go forward- maybe learn form the past but that itself can't be altered.
John O'Mahony seems to have a definite line-up and game plan in mind this season.
He also has a more hands on approach and is reacting more quickly to what's happening on the field. We can argue about his changing of players and tactics last week but at least he did something!
I don't particularly mind we draw; you got to face them as you find them.
The side is basically a very young and experienced one and I think last's week's game will have brought them on a ton. I see no particular reason to fear any side left but definitely no reason to take any side for granted either.
All I would ask for is that both team and manager give it their best shot and I'm confident that they won't be found wanting.
