Armagh / Re: The Armagh Harps Thread
October 10, 2009, 07:15:42 PM
Great performance, won every single indiividual battle. Was thinking to myself that some of them boys will have no trouble making their way into the senior team over the next few years.

Nice to be involved in both finals, Harps haven't won Senior and Minor in the same year since 1955 (not sure if they've even been involved in both finals since) so the boys are making history.

Ironic that one of them is called Judas. He's doing his club no favours by talking about a clubman like that on a public forum.

what is the attraction of supporting a soccer team from a different land that plays in a league where the only challenge comes from the same team year in, year out?

do you feel you have an affinity with japanese or dutch (etc) mercenaries who play for celtic?

how anyone can seriously support any soccer team in another land is beyond me

i have friends who say "come on boys" etc when Liverpool etc are playing --i have never seen the attraction

Sometimes people fear what they do not understand  ::)

If a foreign national happened to be an Architect or a Doctor working in Scotland would he be a 'mercenary?'

GAA Discussion / Re: Mickey Hartes Autobiography

I thought 'Kicking Down Heaven's Door' was one of the better GAA books I've read, even for an Armagh man. I'd definitely read the Autobiography, good ghost writer as well.

Houlie also came on against Kerry in extra time in 2000. Last game for Armagh i think.

Good mention too for Phil Jackson's "the final season" and "more than a game"

Read 'Sacred Hoops' not so long ago, great read altogether, breezed through it in no time. Some fantastic philosophies in it.

All time favourites would be Tony Cascarino, Kicking Down Heaven's Door (Mickey Harte), Carra, Hurling: The Revolution Years (Denis Walsh), Laptop Dancing and the Nannygoat Mambo (Tom Humphries), Paidi O'Se also.

Worst would include Oisin McConville, Robbie Fowler, and The Miracle of Istanbul (can't remember who wrote it but not a patch on Balague's effort.)

We had a girl who just left the office and she was the most condescending and intellectually righteous bitch you ever clapped your eyes on. She got into this course due to start later in the year and informed the boss that she would be leaving at the end of August, to which the boss replied "Sure ye can leave at the end of the month!"

Player who has a Sigerson Cup medal and a Soccer World Cup medal

Socrates but seen somewhere that this is just an urban myth. Apparently he wasn't on any Sigerson panel.

It could just be myth heard it one day never actually researched it,

The rumour is he was at trinity in Dublin i think!! when he was studying in ireland trained with the panel to keep fit for a year and he got it that way.

could just be an urban legend.

Royal College of Surgeons, he trained with the Footballers. Feckin hate seeing that question come up because it's pure balls, don't even think RCSI ever won a Sigerson!

General discussion / Re: Brian Clough

There's a story about Clough that always sticks in my mind. A good friend of mine's da was the secretary of Derry City FC when Clough brought Forest over for a friendly at the Brandywell. When the game was over, Clough walked over to where a couple of the Derry City officials were standing and made it clear that Brian Clough doesn't take his Forest team for anywhere for less than two grand. They were shocked by this because there had never ben an agreement to that effect, but they spent the next hour scampering about trying to get this two grand and, needless to say, he took it and walked out.

Thought it was a bit lousy of him to be honest. I know a lot of famous people make wee appearances here and there and give a wink and say "You'll look after me won't ye?" but I thought that was a bit much.

Just heard there's going to be a report on Cormac McAnallen GAA Club in Sydney on Drivetime Sport tonight. Should be interesting.

GAA Discussion / Re: Sigerson Cup 2009

Anyone who's been heavily involved with a college football team knows that there's a serious bond that grows between the players and while it's hard to compare it with other competitions it's definitely the be and end all for the players involved.

I'll give you an example - Joe Brolly said on his Laochra Gael episode that he 'wept inconsolably' for a week after losing a Sigerson semi-final in the early 90's, yet in the book 'The Chosen Ones' (Colm Keys and Martin Breheny) Brolly stated that winning the All-Ireland with Derry in 1993 was 'the greatest anticlimax of my life.' Sigerson obviously meant a lot to him.

Correcto! Although if you think that Kilkenny's got a wee tiny coast line then there's none.
