very disapponited to see Gardiner dropped .

Me too. Half the year playing midfield and half forward. breaks his jaw. another couple of months in the forwards, and finally dropped, just before the big game that the previous 9 months of training was all about.  Hopefully he'll get another shot before the year is out, preferrably at half back.

I don't see it as much of a surprise that Gardiner is gone really, Dillon had to come back in and it was always going to be Gardiner rather than T Mort or Harte. The problem with Gardiner is that while he's a good footballer, he's not a good enough defensively (regardless of what he offers going forward) for intercounty level and yet he's not good enough to play half forward either as we have better ball-winners there (i.e. Harte/Mort)

Will be very tight. Hopefully talk of Burke having a bad year will mean Mort will finally be able to have a really good game on him.

Mayo by one or two, possilbly after a replay

Quoteso much for change bar Cuniffe the rest of the lads have played under maughan or moran so much for rebuilding for the future

Howley hadn't much game time under any other manager either. Barrett is injured, Campbell is still playing Sigerson, so was Kilcoyne up until last week.

I know Donaghy destroyed us on '06 but are we a bity obsessed with him and the whole FB thing at this stage? No other county has managed to reign in Donaghy - indeed since Donaghy has come on the scene no county has beaten Kerry in championship football.

Maybe we just don't have a top class full back in the county? Maybe we're down to a choice between Heaney and BJP until (if) cafferky makes the grade? While Heaney isn't a natural FB he's not a bad option while we have nothing better, other than '04 & '06 finals he was rarely skinned and in fairness we were destroyed all over the pitch both days and especially so at midfield.

For me, this is where the root of our problems lie, no strong midfielder and no ball-winning half backs and half forwards in the Paul Galvin mould. For this reason I would have liked to see O'Shea start at MF because while Gill may have the strength to throw his weight around in the middle of the pitch, he rarely does so.

A draw or Kerry by one.

QuoteFor me i thought Kevin Deignan was charlestowns best player

Wouldn't agree with that at all. From what I could see in the 2nd half, Deignan was marking McGarry; both players ignored each other and both picked up a good amount of loose balls, particularly long punts out from the back. Easy enough to look good when you're not marking anyone.

For me, Ballina will have to improve a lot if they're to get out of Connacht. Thought they were under pressure for a lot of Sundays game and a lot of "big names" played poorly for them - L Brady, Casey, Devenney, Ruane, Leonard.

Having scored 5 goals in 2 games is all well and good but a points tally of 6 from a county final doesn't exactly bode well for the forward line. Hughes looked lively throughout but other than himself and GB, there was nobody who looked capable of scoring a few points.

McGarrity was poor enough in the first half but improved a lot and was very influential in the last 20 minutes or so. I was surprised they didn't bring DB out to midfield in the first half when they were struggling, not much point in having him in on the square if they're not winning any ball to put in to him.

Charlestown had no "star" performers, more of  a solid team throughout, again though they lack a top quality forward. Tony Mulligan had been touted as possible county standard but based on last Sunday and the first day against Knockmore, I wouldn't really rate him. Haran scored a great point in the first half but wasn't an influential as he needed to be for them to win it.

I'd expect Ballina's backs and midfield to imrpove but if they're to go down it will be through lack of cutting edge up front.

Is the format of the Connacht club championship the same as the county championship?? i.e. Mayo v Galway; Sligo v Roscommon etc??

Quotepaul mc garry m.o.m

Are you kidding me?? G Brady should have got MoM followed by Wynne. McGarry was useless in the 1st half, got a lot of ball alright in the 2nd half but didn't do much with it; I actually checked who C/town's no. 7 was - Deignan - cos I thought he was doing pretty well but then I realised he was "marking" McGarry. Neither player was bothering to pick each other up so both had plenty of the ball and looked reasonably good. G Brady scroed two mighty first half points when Ballina were going nowhere and got the 1st goal which really borught Ballina back into it.

Wynne was v good. Not tall enough for FB for Mayo, but has he ever played in the corner??

QuoteAny match reports from the Senior Final - another championship to add to the list

Tradition, do ye understand it now?

Credit where credit's due Stephenite, well done..............

.............only another two and ye'll have as many Moclair cups as the mighty Knockmore!!!!!

You know when you go to put in a username on a website and when you start with say M, a few options come up i.e. names that have been used previously/recently on that PC. How do you get rid of those and start fresh??

Have tried deleting cookies, temp internet files, clearing the history but no joy......

any ideas??

Thanks

The biggest difference between Kerry and most other teams is their sheer intensity in 50/50 situations. Any ball that is anywhere close to being there for the taking, a Kerry player is straight in on it with 100% committment. Why other teams seem to lack this I don't know.

Obviously having Gooch, D O'Se etc, also helps, but despite having 35 AIs in the bag, they seem so much hungrier than other teams.

Quotethis year our failing had more to do with an incompetent distracted manager

I agree with Rosnarun, JOM was also to blame for our failings in 2004 & 2006.............Off with his head!!!!

Fair play to you Lone Shark, great to have prices available for the club games.

Ballina at 7/4 might be worth a few quid if the day is wet.

GAA Discussion / Re: Donaghy's "tackle" on Ryan
August 29, 2007, 07:24:14 PM
Not disputing the ref's decision at all, what he did was entirely correct considering the rules. The OP wasn't focussing on the rules or the application of them but the blatantness of the foul itself.

Whether Ryan would have actually scored or not is beside the point, the fact that Donaghy would make such a blatant foul in such a crucial area of the field with the scores as they were makes it a red card for me. Usually when a player is taken down when going through it is when the fouling player has at least made half an attempt to tackle him, Donaghy just pulled him down without making even a token effort at tackling. The tackle was never going to hurt Ryan but the sheer cynicism of it is what makes it a serious offence in my book.

Have no complaints about the ref, he made the decision on the spot so.....

But you'll see Irish lads making lighter tackles in France in a few weeks.....
