General discussion / Re: LOST (TV Show)
August 17, 2010, 02:22:58 AM
Sorry have not read whole thread but did anyone notice than the ending was the same as Flann O'Brien's Third Policeman which was shown in season 2 when Desmond was punching the numbers which resulted in best sales ever for Flann's posthumously published novel. I am only after seeing the final season now but always wondered if series would have similar ending. I believe it did.

Is it about a bicycle   ;)

Is there one whistler or a few? Thought I heard a few whistles for the second Tyrone goal chance. If he keeps blowing up valid moves, he could have a career as a GAA referee. Seriously he needs it slapped out of his mouth.

Great performance by Down. Not the shock Marty Morrissey would have you believe. Down has serious talent with young players who have U21 and Minor All-Ireland medals. Division 1 team now and should be major force for awhile. They are also the form team right now and I'd expect them to win their semi. Hard luck to Kerry. This has been a great Kerry team but time has caught up with them and sad to see some players who are now a shadow of their former selves. Would also say that provincial councils need to time their finals closer to the quarter final stage. Kerry were waiting too long, and always looked off the pitch of the game.

Could have been better than Mick O'Connell only for the drink.

Biddy Earley..

That teams are afflicted by "curses" could well be a myth. Biddy Earley and her magic bottle were plying their trade long before the GAA came into existence and therefore she was hardly the cause of Clare's long famine, even if she was for a long time blamed. Then again, they say some priest once cursed Mayo, so you never know.

Just back from McHale. What an electric atmosphere there today. The place was shaking. Amazing performance by Ros to hold out in the end because the momentum was then with Sligo, the wind had really picked up, the decimel levels were through the roof as the magpies smelled victory and the primrose and blue was getting engulfed in a great sea of black and white. Cathal Cregg was heroic today, my man of the match. Won a sight of ball and carried Ros forward when things started to turn. No player gets more criticism in Ros than Finneran and today he was just outstanding. Donie kicked immaculate frees, not just from distance but also with all kinds of noise ringing in his ears. Fergie left it late bringing on some fresh legs but Higgins won the balls that got us those last scores. Sincere hard luck to Sligo. They didn't lose for lack of support. They contributed to a marvelous occasion and as they've done all year when they got going kicked some mighty points. Those who are in charge of McHale had it in excellent shape today. Great stadium. The scenes at the end is something I'll never forget and no matter what happens in qtr final, they have banished away the last ten nightmare years at senior. Come on the Ros.

If only big Joe had been able to replicate Mayo's finest ever goal..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ezlkmUf1c0
Not much making me laugh over the last few days, but never saw that before, classic, all the grace and composure that Sheridan showed as well  :D

That comical but hugely significant goal actually came at the very end of extra time in a replay at the Hyde. Won it for Mayo. At the time I thought Burke fouled Sheerin and should have been a free out. Was an epic game nevertheless.

I maybe wrong but i cant roscommon going 1on1 with kelly,

Curious Sligonian if you knew David Kelly was a Roscommon man, born and bred, until his family moved to Tubercurry. Great player. As your former PRO wrote in the Herald, Roscommon's loss is Sligo's gain. That said, I can't see Ros putting 2 players on Kelly. Looking forward to the battle between Kelly and hopefully Ormsby on Sunday.

Werent Galway awarded the game officially by the connacht Council as  the ref had disallowed the goal??
Then if I remember correctly Galway agreed to a replay.
Cake Curran  :D was the man who took the penalty.

Ros were given the cup and did a lap of honor. Since the ref was surrounded by Galway players after the match, at that time he had not disallowed the penalty. Connacht Council then awarded the game to Galway after ref said he had disallowed the goal. Galway offered a replay. You had several precedents in that one.

Would imagine when Meath see that, they will offer a replay, the GAA will agree, and that's how this will play out.

In fairness, ref gave Louth a lot up until that terrible decision at the end. But Louth were by a long shot the best team. Some of their supporters let them down. Right rough looking gurriers, too. It didn't look like their first time throwing a punch. The booing of free kick takers has crept into the game in a big way this year. Hope we don't see it in McHale next week.

the last time a Connacht final in McHale park didn't involve Mayo was 1962 Roscommon 3-07 Galway 2-09

That was the famous broken crossbar incident when Roscommon were 5 points down in the second half and not too long left when goalkeeper Aidan Brady pulled down the crossbar. When it was fixed a rampaging Gerry O'Malley inspired Ros to victory - with the broken crossbar being the turning point in the game. Castlebar was actually always a very lucky ground for Roscommon and when Mayo defeated Roscommon there in 1992, it was probably the first time most Mayo supporters saw their county overcome Roscommon in Castlebar. There had been two draws there in 89 and 91 (Duggan's amazing free kick), while Ros won there in 86. Incidentally, when Roscommon lost their great record in Castlebar, Enon Gavin actually broke the crossbar again, thirty years after Aidan Brady had pulled it down. Ros have not won a senior game there since.

Hopefully Páirc Markiewicz. Had Sligo won in Salthill last weekend they might have opted to bring it there. If Connacht Council won't allow Markiewicz, Castlebar will surely come into the reckoning then.

Congrats to Sligo; hard luck to Galway. That was a tremendous game of football, fast and some very hard - usually fair - knocks. For most of the game, Galway looked the likely winners especially when they went 3 up after conceding that disastrous goal. But Sligo turned the screw after that and displayed remarkable steel, hunger and nerve to come out on top. Very high scoring game considering the conditions.

Not only big contrast in the skill levels of Germany and England, but what about the contrast between your wan in the Norn Iron shirt supporting England and the German birds? Different class as Jimmy Magee would say.
