Is McNamara not playing tonight. I heard in Sligo today that he was on holidays
Surely he wouldn't go on holidays during the knockout stages of the championship
They are not missing him at the half way mark anyway. Looks like Egan could be brought on at half time

Watched our Seniors on saturday night against Ballymote, a thoroughly enjoyable game. Both teams kicked beautiful points from all angles. I got the feeling that Ballymote were caught a bit on the hop. We hit the ground running and pulled a few points away early on. Ballymote pulled it back to two points going into the closing stages however we tagged on two late points to give us a four point win. Liam Kennedy for me was our man of the match. The lad has some stamina and serious strength for his frame size and age. He hit a shoulder on Clancy late on when he was moved into FF when Ballymote were looking for a goal and sent him flying! No mean feat. He also could have been played in for a goal after breaking the length of the pitch to support an attack late on.
Mark Leonard got through a ridiculous amount of work at CHF and won lots of dirty breaks. His man was taken off in the first half, conor mcgowan was moved to CHB with Feargal Sexton going in FB. He kept Mcgowan quiet and chipped in with a point late on. Thats two players with county experience he has played well on in the last two games. James Brennan also played well as did Quinny. We struggled in the LHF position where the Ballymote wing back played puck throughout the game.
All in all a very enjoyable game. Best for Ballymote were that RHB - did nt get his name , could be that stagg lad. Lyons was very energetic also and played well, Wilson being switched onto him early in the first half.  Two Gilsenans will strengthen the team for the Q Finals.
On the attendance - I noticed the usual suspects at the game. Take away the junior players, ex players and the usual stalwarts (J Watters, Sligonians Dad etc) very few attended from our club. Dont know what the solution is - they missed a very entertaining game.

Played in our junior match today, just about hung on for a won point win. Our team was meant up of older more seasoned players shall we say! The average age is nearer 35 than 30 with the master Jimmy Currid still managing to be one of our better players at the ripe old age of 47( i think). We raced into an early lead, 1-3 to 1 after about ten minutes, kicked 14 wides in the first half. Lets just say, i dont think Tourlestrane will have any problems with topping the group!

Frank Casey 1-13 WB Yeats 2-12 ;)

Great stuff though,

Should that be yeats 19-13??????????? You hope!!!!!!

Poem is very good - not my own work though - came on a chain mail circulating amongst fellow Kindgom exiles - author unknown.

Got to be realistic  :P

Just got the Sligo team text from Club Sligo,

Greene, McGovern, McGuire, Ewing, McNamara, Donovan, J Davey, Mullen, Taylor, Breheny, Costello, Marren, Kelly, EOH, Coen...... no suprises, we cant afford any passengers against Kerry so if that the team that starts we wont win might get lucky and draw :-\. JOC is no fool, i read his book and he'll know they are. KW has been picking them all yr so not suprised there still there. Doubt theyll start in those postions, id swap mcgovern with donovan to mark cooper.

The team is probably as expected. Walsh seems to have been fairly consistent in his selections all year. I would really worry about Neil Ewing. He looked to be caught for pace a few times down in thurles even early on when fresh. He will probably have to follow sean o sullivan (who I doubt will play corner forward)I would expect Kerry to play walsh and gooch in ff line and bring osullivan out to run from deep. This could cause Ewing problems ( Harrison would be the ideal man for this role if fit ).
I would worry about our midfields ability to win primary possesion. Kerry definitely have the edge on us in the middle third when it comes to strength. Our half backs and half forwards will have to win way more breaking ball than we did in Thurles where Ohara was the only man claiming breaks. Breheny wont find it as easy to dispossess men with the ball as in tipp where he performed this brilliantly at least seven times in the first half. I think T Ose and Omahony could do damage rampaging forward as we dont have much pace in the wing forward positions. I would say most people would expect MCarthy to switch to FB and Griffin to move to CHB. Is Coen a bit naive for this game? I know he got a peach of a goal and showed good movement but he was slow to bend his back on several occasions in the second half preferring instead to try and flick it around his man soccer style which resulted in us losing possession.
For us to have any chance of winning on saturday we are going to have to eliminate all unforced errors from our game play to 100% of our potential and hope Kerry play below par. The first twenty minutes against Galway was blighted with these. Four that stood out for me in Thurles were:
1: McGuire doing excellently to win the ball back - then booting the ball up the field to two Tipp players who were free because we had funneled all our forwards bar two back into defence.
2: McNamara receiving a pass with no-one around him and letting it fall between his legs.
3 and 4: Sean Davey kicking two balls straight into the keepers hands from 30 metres when men were overlapping in better positions to kick scores. One of these resulted in a tipp score.
Ah jaysus you could just analyse the teams and tactics to death. Disappointed that no place could be found in the team for Johnny Mc. I think he would be a great man at CHF to get in a few hits. He might not last the full game but he would surely soften up his marker ( I remember a mate of Kieran McGeeney telling me after the first Armagh game in 2002 that McGeeney was never as sore coming off a pitch as he was that day) He also can take good long range scores (one from 50 metres against Westmeath in the park in 2006).

Il stop now cause I'm starting to rave a bit.

Anyone know where you can download good quality images of county crests (250x250 pixels minimum).
It's easy to find them for some counties, but not for others. I'm struggling for good quality ones for Tipp and Monaghan in particular.

Any help much appreciated.
As most county GAA crests are the same as the County Crest I suggest trying county council websites. Although I know in recent years Sligos GAA has changed due to a copyright issue.

Why do kerry have home advantage? Someone earlier said it was neutral venues but obviously thats not the case.

My Dad wont chance the astra, he got lift yday, also Dad recounts one of the Sligo backs marking out an area on the pitch for Spillane NOT TO ENTER, he didnt go near it but then again he didnt need to. Kerins missed a peno and free in the first 5 mins which killed us and also did we train for that match.
Ya my auld boy told me that story also. I believe the man in question was john brennan.
One of the players said to me today he wanted to get Kerry at home, well at least he got one half of his wish granted!!
I think its great for the players. A chance to go  out and play against some of the best players in the country in a championship game. If the lads cant get up for this one its time for the viagra. Dont care where it is or when. Hope we bring a big crowd. Thought the crowd got behind them in Thurles when they were under a bit of pressure.
Really looking forward to it!!

Has he been lining out at Midfield for ye of late Seanie?? Would he have much of an impact around the half forward line or what is his fitness levels like?
I heard that Marrens knee is in poor shape. I dont think he is a likely starter. I think Coen will start when push comes to shove.

Sligo's Fifteen to take on Tipperary on Saturday July 11th. in Semple Stadium, Thurles at 3pm

P Greene

P McGovern
N McGuire
N Ewing

M McNamara
R Donavan
J Davey

E Mullen
T Taylor

M Breheny
A Costello
S Davey

D Kelly
E O'Hara
A Marren

Dont know how Mcnamara holds his place. Marren must have recovered from his injury. Suspect that the team wont line out in these actual positions come throw in.

I would go with:

Greene
Ewing McGuire Donavan
McGovern Phillips Davey
Mullen Taylor
O'Hara Costello Gaughan
Coen Brehony Kelly.

I would not have picked Davey for the last game ahead of Gaughan. I don't get this talk before the Galway game of his great workrate. He does tend to go soloing forward which makes him stand out, however, I think Gaughan tracks back more and generally works harder. I don't know whether Davey will be out to prove selectors wrong in taking him off last day, maybe he will be wounded as Sligonian says. This remains to be seen.
I must say I also cannot see the reasons for dropping Costello.I know he made a few bad errors in the first half when running blind into tackles and losing the ball. I thought he worked very hard for breaking ball and got through a lot of work in the middle third. Many of our best moves in the second half were started by his possessions. He is the best man we have in the position for delivering quality ball to our full forward line. I am sure that if he had taken the free near the end that O'Hara managed to bomb up in the air over the end line that he would have looked for a shorter pass and tried to retain possession.
P.s. --I am only making judgement from the video of the game as I was away
Brehony is a good footballer but does not have the physical strength to play at centre half forward IMO. We are not blessed with individuals who are natural to this position and for me Costello is the best candidate.
For me McNamara cannot be near the pitch after his performance last time out. Misplaced passes with foot and hand added to a lack of intensity cannot be rewarded with a place for this game.
When will there be word on the venue? Hopefully it wont be somewhere way down near Waterford.
