One of the McEnaneys.

:D

If there was a poll on here there is no doubt that the large number of Tyrone posters would ensure a win for Peter Harte. Mind you I'm not saying that he wouldn't deserve it.

The consistenly excellent displays from Darren Clarke are worthy of a mention though. His free taking was excellent, while also scoring from play in every game also. I think that his final tally was 1-36 making him the top scorer in the division. Not forgetting Paddy Keenan, who until last Sunday must have a hump on his back from carrying the Louth team!

Just some of the genuine greats of the game that I know have done a turn for either our club or county down through the years include, Mickey Sheehy, Joe Kernan, Aaron Kernan, Vinny Murphy, Paul Finlay, The Banty (before he went to the dark side). None charged for their services, were all offered a few quid to cover expenses but none sought it.

I am aware of a current Kerry Star who will charge big money for doing the same as Mickey Sheehy and this guy was not one of the greatest footballers of all time!

Aaron Kernan was the one stuck out in my mind, he came to the club to present Minor Championship medals to the lads and brought the Andy Merrigan Cup with him. He was best man at a wedding the next day and should have been in Cross enjoying a few pints, so we promised to have him out of there before ten. He happily stayed until after 11 posing for any amount of photos with a smile on his face. Gave a very inspirational speech and couldn't have been more obliging.

Kieran 'Jap' Finlay, former Monaghan GAA star and Father of current Monaghan player Paul died today after an illness.

He was a stylish forward in same mould as his son. In 1979 the Monaghan team won the Ulster championship for the first time in 41 years with a defeat of Donegal. In the final Kieran Finlay scored 1-09, which was a record in an Ulster final for 20 years.

Paul's man of the match performance on Sunday was one any father would be proud of. RIP Jap.

nice respectful post. RIP

A great family man who gave them great support and was an inspiration for Paul. Never smoked and was mindful of his diet, fought the good fight but went before his time. A good guy, who loved a song and was fond of a game of golf. I sincerely don't think anyone was expecting him to go so quickly.

His performance in the 79 Ulster final was his crowning glory and something I know he was very proud of. A performance that puts him in the company of Frank Mc Guigan and Oisin Mc Conville, nothing shabby about that now!

My deepest sympathy to all the Finlay family. RIP Kieran "Jap" Finlay

Delighted that Dublin won. I love their brand of football and they have been involved in some great games in the last few years. However does anybody else think that the current trend of getting keepers up to take frees and 45s has to be looked at by the GAA authorities. When you consider how long it takes each time for the keeper to make his way up the pitch to take the free it wastes a lot of time. If an outfield player took the same amount of time over a free the ball would be hopped.

Straight answer - No!

Has a keeper ever won the player of the year?! He has to be in the running surely?

delighted for cluxton and alan brogan. fully deserved after years of being nearly men.
+1. 2 stalwarts who deserve this day. Although Cluxton didn't have his best day in terms of kickouts, there was a 5 min spell in the 2nd half where Kerry must have won 5 or 6 in a row, a couple kicked straight to Kerry players.
+2 I thought that barring that period he had a good game. He has set such high standards from his kickouts that we all notice when they don't go to plan. Its not as if its the first time he has went straight down the tunnell. Have you seen the players bar? He probably just wanted to get in for a free (and well deserved) beer  ;)

There is also an excellent Dermot Earley exhibition in the GAA museum at the moment. I don't know how long it is there for, but I was impressed with it when I saw it during the week.

Was Joe enjoying a few glasses of vino with lunch again?

Also, I wonder what the hairdressing budget for the Sunday Game is!

Surely if you call your team St Mary's or St Brigid's you should listen to him and act accordingly.

If your team is called O'Donovan Rossa's or Wolfe tones or Pearces should you adjust your political outlook accordingly?

I was thinking the exact same thing. Do Castlebar Mitchels or John Mitchels (Liverpool) club members have to be pro-slavery, do members of Granuailes in Australia have to become pirates or members of the Sinn Fein club in Australia join the political party. Do Cormac McAnallen's in Australia have to support Tyrone? Do Clonmel Commercials have to become businessmen.

Yes to all the above.

What do Crossmaglen and Nemo members have to pro ?

I'm away off to become a carpenter and marry a woman who is already in child to another man so!

What about the lads from Annaghminon Rovers or the Dreadnots? At what age are you too old for the Dundalk Yound Irelands or Eire Og in Carlow?

how do clubs afford to pay this kind of money for insurance, then club supplies and managers.no wonder clubs are in trouble

That's just the cost of property and public liability insurance, there is also the cost of the player injury scheme as well. It is all needed and the injury scheme is good, most players and supporters have no appreciation of the huge overheads that clubs face every year before a ball is even kicked/pucked!

Looks like I am stuck so. Serious ball of money to find every year. Thanks for the replies.

No worries, as I say, we tore into it last year, with no success, so I know where you are coming from. If there is anything else on such matters don't be afraid to ask, very well versed on them al!!

The current scheme is an improvement from the arbitrarial method of applying the "hirers insurance" pre 2009. In our instance we do at least know that we are covered for all eventualities. Three areas where this scheme could be improved:
1) Introduce a risk assessment scheme that gives your discounts ie. those clubs who have their premises properly secured, alarmed, trip hazards removed etc, get discount compared to those who leave barb wire about the place (just an example)
2) Rate clubs based on previous claims history. If we have a break in and 10k worth of damage/loss incurred, should we pay the same as the neighbouring club who has similar facilities and never had a claim? The correct answer is No, we should bear a greater cost at the scheme renewal in 2012. Doesn't work like that at present though.
3) Although I'm guessing that a certain club in Cavan has yet to pay their renewal for 2011, they are not on their own! An instalment option would be very handy to clubs, most of whom are struggling to manage a monthly cashflow. Instead, the bill sits there and sits there until you can build up the funds to cover it/the county board satarts naming and shaming.
Just some possible improvements.

You are right about the excess for property claims 5Sams. No fear of any claims going for a few O Neills balls being nicked from the shed!

I'm pretty certain that the GAA scheme is mandatory and that you can't go off get a quote in the open market. What facilities does your club have and I can advise you further?
Its a community pitch with a GAA and soccer pitch. Club house, meeting room, car park and a small training pitch. Some "homemade" flood lighting on the training pitch. Also a small covered stand beside the pitch.

As mentioned, Willis administer the GAA club insurance scheme. You will have been issued with the property and public liability insurance at the start of the year. Ours is currently just short of €6k this year, as we have community centre and bar. The insurance is graded based on your facilities a) no property b) dressing rooms c) dressing rooms/stand/hall d) club with bar rural e)club with bar urban. Your club falls into either category b or c. As for the "community pitch" I would be very surprised if the whole grounds are not vested in the GAA, as they have to be in order to receive funding for developments. I assume that you did receive the property and public liability renewal from the county board secretary at the start of the year? If you don't like the price there is nothing that you can do, we made several representations to the county board about it last year and only concession we got was more time to pay it.
