Laois / Re: LAOIS SENIOR FOOTBALL 2016
March 06, 2016, 08:22:33 PM
Was at the game today. I would say between twenty and thirty Laois people at the game which was disappointing!

To the game itself. Very poor in our middle third, half back midfield and half forward! Not tracking runners, poor passing and some not giving the proper pass! Their goal game as a result of us kicking the ball straight to them! In our forward line we had no plan. It was depressing ! Conor meridith was probably our best player! A few of them need to improve big time if we are going to stay in this division.

A few footnotes: I herd from two people at the game that the team travelled up on the morning of the game, pure madness . Not saying this is reason that we lost but it's so amatur !

Did Evan O Carroll get a bad injury? I read that he had to go off after 33 minutes?

Finbarr, like everyone Im gutted about today , However giving out about the management is not the way to go! this management is the most professional we have ever had. If they went you would see how bad things can get really quickly!! The team that played today should have been good enough to beat Kerry! The players have to shoulder the blame, they were the people between the white lines. Just a couple of things to note, From looking at Laois over past few years our strength and conditioning is not up to inter-county standard. This starts at 14 not when they come into a senior set up! Also people are raving about our development squads which in my opinion are a joke most years. Also how many hurlers do we have that can hurl both sides. Cha is the only one. Today is a wake up call about where we really stand in the pecking order!!

Laois / Re: Divisional teams in the Laois SFC

Great idea, I would go one step further and have a third team called mid laois. This team would pick from Timahoe, spink, park ratheniska, harps, borris in ossorry etc, north laois would be courtwood, vicarstown, kilcavan, o'dempseys, the rock while instead of south laois I would call the final team east laois and pick from barrowhouse, crettyard, ballylynan. I know the last two are currently senior but I think this should be reduced to 12 and maybe even 10.

I have to agree with this. We need to stop fooling ourselves and work hard. In the short term, we really need our u21 team to reach a leinster final. This grade is neglected and this is a shame as we have a chance of competing at this grade. A successful year at u21 would do wonders for the senior set up in the long run.

I have never seen curly play, but has he given 12/13 years service to Laois like ross? Also we has been one of the star forwards in the country over a ten year period. Its a disgrace that munnelly never got an all-star. also he basically carried us to a 1/4 in 2006 and 2012. I rem my father saying that curly would not play with laois in 1985 (some things never change with laois players!) and laois would have won with him playing, cant rem ross ever letting us down on that front. Having potential like curley is one thing but delivering on the big day is another thing altogether. In my opinion Ross did that for us in championship football which is why I think he is our greatest. People might think im mad but the period between 2003 and 2012 will go down as one of our better periods by Laois standards.

Can't see Ross making the first 15 next year. His pace is gone. I'd rather see him retire and be remembered as the best forward Laois ever produced. Id have meradith in the team. New manager or Not  the forwards will be much the same as laois year and to be honest there isnt much wrong with that.  We might get Kieran Lillis to commit who would be a great option at centre back.

My team would be: Broady , Booth/ Paul begley, Timmons, attride, strong, lillis, begley, Quigley, JOL, Donagher, Meridith , Paul Kingston, O'Carroll, Donie ,Shiels/O'Connor/Walsh/ Evan Costello

Laois / Re: Underage hurling tournaments

Lads, we have to up our game with the underage, I think after a few relatively "successful" years at minor we were becoming complacent thinking the work is being done- clearly from last weekend it isn't.

One wish that I have for next year that there is a big drive on for the U21s. This is an age group that Laois should target to do well in. WE had a decent minor team in 2013 plus this age group has a better potential to bring players through to senior level.

This time tomorrow our neighbours could be in an all-ireland final. Was this years team underrated?

I would love Leo Turley along with conway and Higgins as selectors Plus John Sugrue as physical trainer. To me that would be an impressive set up. I see Eamonn Breen in the running, Is he the Kerry wing back from 1997?

Leo turley mightn't be a bad one, did great stuff with Leixlip and Blackhall gaels plus he is a passionate Laois man.  Spoke to a few Meath and kildare lads and they rate him highly.

High Fielder: We can blame the county board on alot of things but not because of  no championship in mid July. Any county board across the county cant fix games in July due to the qualifiers. Instead we have league games which by their name are games!! Most clubs don't want championship in July or August as many of their younger players are in America or the older guys with families are on hols. Even if the county board fixed championship for July it still wont stop people going on J1s. In fact I think the structure of the championship is one of the best in the country.

As for the "meaningless league games" its up to the clubs to change this attitude- Maybe a sanction of conceding two games gets you kicked out of championship. Its about time clubs in this county got their house in order. I live outside laois and the clubs around me have the same problem as those in Laois however they seem to just get on with it.

Unlaoised- That was in the championship that we beat Monaghan!!! Got to the 1/4 that year and lost by 3pts to the dubs. At the time laois supporters were complaining about our style of play and it was an embarrassment when less than two thousand laois people went to look at  the 1/4 final.  That was a great summer as we got to play, Carlow, Monaghan, Letrim, Meath and Dublin.  Three years on look at us now.- out before July.  I just couldn't understand the negativity at the time and I have been proven right!!!

great post unlaoised. about time someone on this site got a bit of perspective !! We have plenty of young good footballers, We just need a good manager to get the best out of them. Remember we beat monaghan in 2012 and look what they have done since with the exact same team!!!
