GAA Discussion / Re: Joe Brolly

So, what can we do on the discussion boards to check the validity of the Sunday Times story that O'Neills has been outsourcing some of its manufacturing to Bangladesh and to implore the GAA to do something about it if true?

If this player returns, having turned over a new leaf, he should not be targeted by opponents nor by supporters. If he proves to be the proverbial leopard, then he should never play again. Let's hope he uses his considerable talent to play football in the spirit of the game.

I'm amazed that rte pundits, commentators and analysts did not see the mayo man recoil after the Tyrone player made contact with his neck. That's why the whistle went. It was a foul. Furthermore, there is no advantage rule yet. Anyway, two Tyrone men stopped after the whistle went. End of story.

GAA Discussion / Re: Can you help provide data?

I'm not simply recording match stats for reports. I'm working on what specifically happens inside an opposition half and how success or failure might be related to different levels of forward movement and teamplay. The quest is to find out if the freer scoring teams tend to be those that have worked on the details of attack running or if they are blessed with players who just know when and where to run, regardless of instruction. This is the first part of a lengthy study, I hope.
A turnover is simply when the ball is lost to the opposition during play.

Many thanks. I wasn't aware of it.

GAA Discussion / Can you help provide data?
August 12, 2013, 10:49:30 AM
Good morning all:
I am currently working on a project about scoring percentages and how they may be improved. There are many different ways to classify attacks and opportunities to score. I have based my data on clean possession in the opposition half of the pitch and the what happens thereafter. Most teams, other than those that are completely swamped throughout a game, will have clean possession in the opposing half between 40 and 50 times in a game and the % of these which are turned into scores is my focus.
Based on data from some 120 games over the past three years (male club and county, minor and senior) I have found that winning teams generally convert 28-45% of these into points, with 33% being the norm - and I count a goal as 3 scores / points.
To illustrate the balance of attacks and imbalance of scores, may I use the data from a recent club senior game.

Team A          46 attacks / 6 points / 7 shots (4 wide and 3 dropped short) / 33 turnovers = 13% score return
Team B          49 attacks / 17 points (3-8) / 11 shots ( 9 wide and 2 dropped short ) / 21 turnovers = 35% score return

I'm also looking at the % of unsuccessful attacks which finished with a shot that went wide or dropped short and at those attacks which were thwarted and the ball turned over before a shot was taken.

So, what am I asking? I would be very grateful if you could tag (record the same stats) for one game that you attend before the end of the season. You may have to become a loner for the duration of the game, standing in isolation and appearing to be a journalist, losing friends as a result. If you manage to get the figures please post them on this thread, complete with names of teams involved and playing level.

I usually tag the game in real time and collate them at the end of the game. Below is an example of how I began to tag a game between team R and team L.

R / T
R / W
L /PT
R/PT
L/S
L/W
R/GL
L/T
R/W
R/T
R/T

T for turnover, S for shot dropped short, W for wide, PT for point, GL for goal.

Thanks in anticipation of any help you can give.

Ten years from now might we be looking at a different game with team fouls and a 20m free being awarded after a limit has been reached?

Wasn't there a time when we all castigated the Brazilian Cafu for claiming to have been struck in the face and the blow had connected with his midriff? I cannot believe we are now copying that in Gaelic football. I'm sure there were at least three such incidents at the weekend. Anybody care to elaborate?

Bet won. £50 richer. Anyway, to matters brolly. I think it's time to support Joe and go a step further to start a campaign of condemnation against other unsavoury acts on the pitch, including taunts about family members (especially female), persistent nipping, standing on heels, stamping on toes and spitting. They all happen in our games and they have become the elephant in the room. And to those of you reading this and objecting because these are things in your idea of a man's game, I say feck off and play soccer where these practices have prevailed for generations.

Cavan / Re: Official Cavan GAA Thread
August 05, 2013, 02:43:32 PM
Was at the game and cavan appeared overawed. Calls made for impossible passes by forwards and, worse still, futile attempts by others to try and make the passes. When good footballers review some of the stuff they did on and off the ball (when cavan had the ball), they will cringe. It's a direct result of being affected by the enormity of the occasion and perhaps the pitch too.
Eugene keating was one of the guilty parties calling for impossible passes.

The black card is a wonderful idea for one simple reason. It will get us all talking late into the night and may even lead to the resurrection of the ceili house in the community. A great move by the GAA to keep us all engaged. Brolly and co. are currently paving the way with the trailer. Coming to a pitch near you in 2014 -BLACK CARD DAWN!

Oh dear; when will we learn that rules and common sense are two different things. If they were, we would have fewer economic problems for a start (eg common sense says we should redirect profits from the banking sector into the health service. The rules say we cannot and that bonus payments must still be awarded).
With regard to football, we all have to wait until next year when Sean's tackle will be met with a black card and, given the time of the offence, will probably result in his not being replaced. I counted no fewer than 11 instances yesterday where a passer's supporting run was blocked by an opponent. Next year that number will drop dramatically. We can complain all we want; fact is, the tackle could not be punished under the rules with a red card.
