No doubt the timing is ideal for Walsh....after Sligo's 2008 Connacht Championship the only way is up really.

But on the positive side, he is in place in good time, has a chance to do his homework on the club scene and put in a good tough pre-season. He has three knowledgable selectors too. Good experienced managers are not ten-a-penny at he minute so give him a chance before hanging him. I dont know how you it can be said he doesnt give a f**k for Sligo.....it won't be a stepping stone to anywhere if he doesnt do a good job for ye now will it?

He be wanting to do well for himself more than Sligo, personal satisfaction, if he does well and Galway come calling will he stay?

homework on what club scene? Eastern harps... no county get togethers until january aswell which means less pre season than usual. Has he got any coaching qualifications?

Its a disgrace he got the job end of story. He should never of got near it...  I think its going to be a disaster worst than jordan.

His reasons for doing well are irrelevant....if he does well Sligo will still benefit wont they? If he doesnt do well, the Galway thing wont come into it...if he does well, and the Galway job came up im sure he'd be interested. Are you sayin if it was the other way around a Sligoman wouldnt leave Mayo or Galway to manage Sligo???

You have made your mind up without giving the man a chance.....just dont come back singin his praises if he pulls a decent season outta the bag for ye. You're definitely nott a "glass half full" type are ya Sligonian  :D

Ladbrokes suspend betting on new Galway manager
20 October 2008

Following a flurry of bets on Michael Bond becoming the new Galway hurling manager, Ladbrokes has closed the book on the market.

Bond, who led Offaly to All Ireland glory in 1998 is expected to form a dream ticket along with Galway hurling legends Michael Coleman, Steve Mahon and Joe Cooney.

Commenting, Donal McCarthy, Ladbrokes Ireland said; "If Mr Bond is appointed Ladbrokes will be shaken but not stirred. The only other likely candidate at this time is Portumna's Bainisteoir, Jimmy Heverin, but Michael Bond started out at evens and following the sacking of Ger Loughnane we had to suspend the market only 48 hours after it was posted.

"His team of selectors is a veritable who's who of Galway hurling legends so we can see a very positive response to that from the clubs in Galway. The Bond ticket has a home grown look to it also which is what Galway are looking for this time around."

Mayo / Re: Mayo Club Football.

Jesus, can't believe that Corofin are favourites for Connacht  ::). Bookies obviosly basing their odds on reputation rather than form. They won a poor Galway championship. Either Mayo team should beat them

Its gonna be an insider anyways judging by Miko Ryan's comment this morning that a Galway native was his preference.

Of the two that have said they would be interested, Id prefer Heverin but as Sylvie said, Mattie Murphy has earned his chance to have a shot at the job. Whether he would go forward again after prior kicks in the teeth is another story.

Hurling Discussion / Where now for Galway hurling?

Now that Gerlock has been shown the door, who is the man to get he best out of this talented, if slightly watery, bunch of players? Two candidates from within the county in Heverin and Michael Bond. Bond (with Mike Coleman, Joe Cooney and Steve Mahon as part of his team) will get alot of backing, probably moreso because of the three legends lining up behind him. Heverin (with Anthony Cunningham) has the more recent pedigree with what hes achieved at Portumna.

Would anyone from outside the county touch the job with a barge pole at this stage?

Well folks, it official.......Ger is GONE! 26 votes for.....28 votes against. Could it have been any more slender.

So Michael Bond or Jimmy Heverin it is.......

Portumna won rather handily; Mellows started brightly but had three wides in a row. In their first attack Port' opened up the Mellows defence and scored a goal. Even at this stage it was pretty much gameover. Both Damien Hayes and JC were supposedly carrying knocks coming into the game but the former had a very good first half while the latter , even though like his teammates playing in third gear, was, well, Joe Cooney++. Port' are arguably stronger than ever this year and it will take a monumental effort from Gort (hopefully) or Loughrea to stop them; that semi' is next Sunday.

The real fireworks may come tonight when Gerlock will find out his fate. It wasn't looking too good for him over the last few weeks but according to McIntyre in the Tribune, he has made a comeback in recent days. Interesting times immediately ahead I'd say.

Who would be more likely to get the job if Gerlock falls? Heverin or Bond? Id imagine Heverin given Portumna's achievements in the last few years and Bonds inter-county inactivity since the late 90's. Or will Cooney, Coleman & Mahon swing it for Bond?
