charlestown should beat knockmore, but history tells me that knockmore will try to stop charlestown playing football.

charlestown by 4pts

i woud not write Ballina off, however Ballagh seem to be incredibly motivated, mabye they have peaked too soon.

hardly that much of a shock, charlestown are a handy bunch, their biggest problem over the years that they were too much of a pure footballing side.

now they have a lot of help at midfield, and a target man up front.

I think as much as anything, it is a function of;

A) children of Irish and Irish american having exposure to numerous other sports, which get significant tv time, i.e. baseball, basketball, american football, hockey, etc.

b) the next generation of irish american kids, are products of parents who have moved out of irish strongholds such as the Bronx and Queens and are thus less likely to go to the likes of a gaelic park as often as their parents did.

It is sad to see, as gaelic park in particular served as not only a social outlet for new immigrants, it was also directly and indiretly responsible for placing thousands in jobs during the eighties and nineties.

The GAA in New York have the ability to change things around by mandating that each senior team , include at least five players who have come through the minor ranks, .i.e are american born, if this does not happen soon, the football will go down the same path as the hurling.

re: open draw

The q/finals are not an open draw, hence the fact that the losers of the Connacht and Ulster finals are up to play next, with the winners playing Sligo and Tyrone respectively.

I wish it was an open draw, then again I wish I was 6ft 6 and playing midfield for Mayo.

The official reason that it is not an open draw, is that it would be to difficult for scheduling purposes. I supose they couldnt ask the province to have finished their respective finals by mid-july. Oh wait a minute they have.

Dont forget there are a lot of not very sharp, narrow minded people running the schedules, with may I add a vested interest in seeing that the respective provinces maintain significant amounts of control.

The supporters desire for an open draw are not considered.

Monaghan certainly did not hold back. From a neutral standpoint, I thought they were borderline dirty on some occasions, more so than Tyrone.
