GAA Discussion / Re: Riot at Tyrone club match
April 17, 2007, 11:15:01 AM
QuoteI thin kthis may have been his revenge for Dromore club getting away with hitting the referee after being defeated in last years county final.

It was a county semi final...and the referee wasn't hit but he was shouted at as he left the field and had to make his way through a scrum to get to the tunnel so it didn't look good. You can't put any blame on Mickey Hughes for calling the match off, our games should have no place for people who come onto the field and elbows another player in the back of the neck. If a referee feels that a player could get seriously hurt then he has every right to call the game off.

Quotelawnseed, your argument would be that bit stronger if the incidents didnt actually happen.....

The voice of reason. Tyronnies in denial . who'd have thought it.

I don't think Lawnseed would be too pleased to be called a Tyronnie..

Heard who the Ardboe mentor that came on to the field and chopped the Dromore FF. Absolutely no surprise to hear his name mentioned, as he was one of the most trecherous full backs to play the game. Should have received a lifetime ban for one particular attack that left a Carrickmore player within an inch of his life a few years back. Also heard that there wasn't any supporters involved, the referee received no abuse, there was no indication that anything would kick off in the second half, but that both teams got stuck in after the break. Both teams should prepare themselves for a season of away games.

Are they expecting our seniors to travel 1.5 hours to Aghyaran on a Friday evening (possibly longer with traffic in Omagh at evening rush hour) and then for the reserves to travel to the same venue at a seperate time. I know putting together fixtures is a tough job but that is taking the piss. If they want a round of league games for Friday week they should organise Round 9 of the fixture list that would have Dromore travelling the 35-40 minutes to West Tyrone.

Quarterback...you'd be safer editing that post to remove the referees name. Think it was Mickey Hughes that mentioned in his annual report last year that refs get abuse at games, in club notes and online!!! Best wishes to to the Killyclogher lad you broke / dislocated his ankle in the reserve match. Not a pretty sight to see something like that.

Good article in todays IN from Paddy Heaney. Apparently the IN received a bit of guff from the listeners of the Steven Nolan show about failing to dedicate front and back covers of the newspaper the day after the north beat Sweden in the soccer. The editor of the IN Noel Doran was asked to come on the radio to explain the papers scant coverage of the event, despite the papaer giving a full match report and mentioning the result on both front and back covers, the unionist powers at the BBC deemed the coverage unsatisfactory. The BBC then sent TV cameras around to the IN offices to get Noel Doran to explain his papers position.

I didn't know this had happened but again gives further proof to the attitudes at the BBC for the largest spectator sport in the island. Paddy Heaney makes a very valid point that why doesn't the BBC make representations to the New Letter who refuse to carry any Gaelic Games coverage and to the Telegraph who give scant regard to GAA. The IN does a very good job in covering a large spectrum of sports, but it's sports coverage is unasshamedly focused on GAA. It's a pity that the other papers, and in particular the News Letter, wouldn't at least attempt to acknowledge Gaelic Sports.

There is a possibility that come May Armagh could be in Div 3 and Donegal could be League Champions. What a situation that would be. But you wouldn't write of Armagh in that game. If Limerick find their range like they failed to do against Tyrone, Donegal will still get a good game on Sunday.

GAA Discussion / Re: Donegal v Kerry

Donegal looked very good and very fit. They look Championship fit in March which is no bad thing but you wonder will they be tired come later on in the season. Donegal should press on now and at the minute they are the form side and should be getting a League title come the end of April. After a bring start Kerry faded but with a few of their players back and a bit more training they'll still be there or there about.

That's a massive turn out at training. But don't forget Errigal is a parish of 4 chapels and 4 primary schools. Should the monolopies commission not move in here and break up this massive business  ;) Just thinking of our own parish where we have Galbally and Donaghmore in the one parish, each with its own primary school, chapel and senior football clubs. Probably the strongest parish in Tyrone, eh RRHF. Carrickmore and Loughmacrory in the Termonmaguirc parish (Creggan as well). Does anyone know of any other parishes with a pick as strong as Errigal, with 3-4 primary schools to choose from?

QuoteWhy, were they all being played in grounds where the church provided the parking facilities?

The final round of fixtures in all divisions were to take place at the same time to prevent any team having an advantage i.e. knowing scoring average etc. So with the church asking the GAA to move the Donegal game to the Sunday then the GAA had to compromise and move all games to the Sunday. The GAA wanted all games under lights on a Saturday evening and Donegal County Board were working hard to have the lights up for that time, but they should have known that there was mass on that evening!!
