Interesting comments from Prenty in the Mayo News. Do I detect a little threat to future Connacht finals at Hyde Park there?

From Mayo News

Connacht GAA Council Secretary John Prenty said that the council had not been informed about any protest planned for the game. "We haven't been informed about a protest. Hopefully it will take place outside the ground and not inside, because there are games to organise. We're trying to bring events into Roscommon, not take them out of it," he said.

If ye bred ciaran mac with cora now wouldnt ye have some throughbred of a free taker or better still imagine if ye bred ciaran with conor

Ciaran McDonald was a mighty player but strangely enough he, too, had problems with 45s.

I would be careful about laughing about Mayo freetakers because one of these days they'll surely stick a pile of them over the bar from every angle. Probably against Ros. They are clearly developing their own version of Dutch total football only it's total freetaking – every player at anytime can be the freetaker. Even the subs running on the pitch are likely to take a stab at sticking one over. And in my opinion, that's not only innovative, its impressive.

Looks like the Mayo county board decided to take the scenic route before they've even entered the qualifiers.

Whatever happened to that cherished concept of the perfect Connacht final: Galway v Mayo. It only seems like yesterday when the good denizens of the more westerly parts of the west bemoaned the one-hat Connacht draw, which has every now and again resulted in an imperfect provincial final. Indeed it has mystified many how the Connacht Chairman has been unable to pull a second hat out of his hat and keep these two great rivals apart until July. Does he not know that Leitrim, Sligo and Ros are only upstarts and unable to fill McHale or handle the Salthill air in Pearse? And London? Well, don't mention London. Ruislip almost witnessed slaughter on a scale that has not been witnessed on the Banks of the Thames since Queen Boudicca burned the town down two thousand years ago.  Now after getting the fright of their life from the likes of London and New York, it appears neither Mayo or Galway are even fit to show up for a Connacht semi-final clash with the other. This is very disconcerting and there won't be a sacred cow milked in Connacht for the rest of the Summer.

Certainly had Collins nailed that last free and put London 3 up, game was all but over. Collins was a sweet freetaker at underage, too. I'm sure Sligo lads will remember him from five or six years ago in the Hyde. I'd still expect a very different Mayo the next day.

Well done to our neighbours in longford. Fully deserved and great to see a team which doesn't get into finals too often lifting some silverware.
Last time was well over 40 years ago and it was a Barden who did the lifting that time also.
If I remember correctly, there only one league final at the time- no divisional trophies and Longford beat Galway, the All Ireland champs.

That was a victory that inspired some country and western songs about the blue and gold. Congrats to Longford on their victory today.

Slade= Merry Christmas
Mud= Lonely this Christmas
Dr Elmo = Grandma got run over by a reindeer.

Not to be pedantic but I think "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" was first recorded by the Irish Rovers.

Well done to Naomh Bríd. Nice bit of vision by Frankie with that last free. Thought he had a great game and took some hard knocks. Kill will feel themselves very unlucky but once play opened up, Bridgets had more firepower up front.

Fianna Fail will be back - probably after a stint of FG and Labour - because at the end of the day the people are Fianna Fail. We have been a one party state for so long and when FF mess up they still get elected, forgiven, with the usual comments "sure if the other crowd got in they'd be just as bad." The people are FF and the people are idiots. It was the farmers with land who were out with big brown signs pointing down bohareens only cows had ever been down before, proclaiming: "Development Land". Then you had every Tom, Dick and Harry who was now suddenly a building developer, bogman Donald Trumps, throwing up ugly housing everywhere, with their American names: Crystal Hollow and all that shite. And the farmers who sold the land - their own fathers had broke their backs on - were buying property in Florida and New York and Portugal, enjoying the status of having an "investment property". And because they were stupid, they overpaid there, just as the wannabe developers overpaid them. You had county councils getting money for every useless house that was built and so planning permission was granted without any thought of the consequences. You had local chambers of commerce, local newspapers, local politicians, priests and other lobby groups campaigning for soulless hotels to be built in some of the most natural scenic wonders in the world and if you dared try and stop it, you'd have been shot. There was uproar in Roscommon when Taisce stopped a big ugly hotel being built near the shores of Lough Key after Roscommon County Council granted permission. Thank God. That Canadian Company - Newfound Consortium went bankrupt recently - and we'd have been left with the whole place destroyed and a big ugly heap of concrete shite for future generations to view. Unfortunately this country is full of cowboys and they don't care what they destroy - whether it be a prehistoric monument or our children's future. However our cowboys are the Blazing Saddles type compared to the cowboys out in Europe and when they rode into town there was only one winner. Their stupidity was laid bare for all the world to see. They actually succeeded in doing what the likes of the racist Punch Magazine was never able to do: makes fools of Paddy on the world stage.

Since when is Roscommon in the midlands

Traditionally it isn't but in reality its as much midlands as Westmeath, sure Tipp and Cavan should be considered the Midlands too, but we tend to refer to the Midlands to the Midland counties that are in Leinster.

Well that's what I meant,I always think of the midlands as Laois,Offaly,Westmeath and probably Longford.

Its one of those your both right times, with Athlone being more or less the middle of the country, South Roscommon and East Galway are closer the middle than Laois.

Anything West of the Shannon is the West - you can tell once you cross over that natural boundary that you are in a different place altogether. Sad to see that the Champion is no more but its days looked numbered once many of it's "top" writers moved over to the Roscommon People. Although many never even read it in the old days because it had an unrepentant FF ethos. The Herald was always the leading newspaper in Ros, anyway - although it had its share of interesting editors too.  That said, the strategy of local newspapers is very foolish. Their websites are absolutely cat. These newspapers should be setting up local portals that are updated constantly, with information online that is not available on print, not just a half-arse effort to upload some of the print content (several weeks too late) in the most badly formatted way possible. They should be creating engaging experiences for their web savvy readers so they can start to sell advertising on them. They should be seeking ways to get their content on every new platform, where consumers are looking for news, sports updates, properties, and what have you. You'll see more and more newspapers - both local and national - going out of business in the years to come. But the news lust of readers won't go away.

And to get back on topic, congrats to Sligo. They least they deserved after all the county brought to the championship this year. The atmosphere in Castlebar on Connacht final day was something else and the supporters were very gracious after a devastating loss. Few would begrudge them adding some silverware from other All-Ireland grades to this.

Mayo 4-09 Kerry 1-07

One lad scored all four goals. Surely should be a legend in Mayo for that feat alone. What was his name again?

Willie McGee

The very man. Will Mayo bate Ciarraí? Yes if they have Willie McGee.

Two more names added on Friday - The list now stands at:

Mick O Dwyer
James Horan
Denis Kearney
Anthony Mc Garry

County Board may add other candidates if they feel this list is not up to scratch. It looks like Micko is in the buck seat.

By any chance, would that be the same Denis Kearney who is currently manager of Castlerea St Kevins in Roscommon?

Yes. A Carracastle man.
