GAA Discussion / Re: Armagh V Cavan
February 03, 2008, 08:09:13 PM
I have to say Stephen looked the part, and Tony made ALL the difference.  Stevie Mc D is a confidence player when it comes to frees, and as soon as he misses one he is TOAST for most of the rest of a game.  It was a brave (if blatently sensible) move to introduce Tony, if only for free taking duties, and it is the first time in I don't know how many years that a switch on the line has made such a matchwinning difference.
Ok, the original line-up was constrained by club committments, but all the switches seemed to work.  Even if Philly Loughran was not wonderful in the middle, when he came on he released Gareth O'Neill to go into the full forward line, and his high fielding released Clarke for the confidence-building point that will kick-start his season and bring Sam back to the Orchard.

Sorry, got carried away, but we had a lucky debutant manager once, and that worked a treat!!

GAA Discussion / Re: The value of a quote
January 15, 2008, 03:56:43 PM
I'm sure most of you know, but headlines are written by sub-editors in nearly all cases, rather than by the journalists themselves.

Subbies are looking for a catchy, pithy headline which, hopefully, relates to the story it is headlining, but most importantly, which fits into the space they have available for it.

Journalists may take issue with the headlines to their stories  after the fact, but have little control over either them, or the prominence/ position of their story on the page.

I know this comment is not really about quotes, but I hope it does shed light on (apparently?) misleading articles in the papers.

the worst thing about it was I fcuked the irish news in the corner until about 15 minutes ago, when I read the joe kernan piece.  this is maybe why Paddy Heaney gets paid for his thoughts, and, if there is a God, young Donny will never have to.

It is not funny and it is not clever. But it is racist in the stage iorish sense, and why the Irish News keeps publishing it is not so much a mystery as a sin.

GAA Discussion / Donny Doherty diary in the Irish News

Maybe I should not be giving this glipe the oxygen of attention, but what is the craic with this pile of absolute trite tripe.  Who gives one shiney shight about the musings of this moran and his "Gah" family.

Two minutes on this board would have unearthed 20 more interesting contributors than this would-be columnist, and I hope his next submission is edited down to the interesting bits, which would take up a hell of a lot less space than the heading and that already-annoying cartoon.

If this is the Irish News getting down with its Gaelic-playing/ loving fanbase, please have a wee rethink.

i know it is easier to ignore it, but it could actually have been a good idea. (maybe it is Fearon weedling his way into a regular slot outside of the letters section)

Funny how he was playing then.  Surely he would not have gotten away with playing while suspended.  you would think, just maybe, he didn't get a straight red after all.  And if he didn't, should we not have played him anyway, in case it annoyed you.

thankfully I didn't come on here looking for sympathy, and certainly not from a Bridge man.  Were we not supposed to play Stansfield then? Didn't get that memo.

Yes, Stanno and Stevie were all we had up front first half, and he made a few vital contributions near then end.  we went 10 - 6 down after the sending off, then came back to 10 each, and had the beating of them at that stage as they completely shit it, but we lost our composure in the last 10 minutes, took 4 or 5 wrong options, and the rest is history for another year.

Not sure if there were any Championship scores on here, but Cruppny drew, and Killeavy were bate by maghery 0.12 to 0.10.

Joke of a referee, gave Maghery a point early on that was DEFINATELY wide, booked three Killeavy men in the first half for very little, then put Karl O'Hare off at the start of the second for handbags at best.(2nd yellow)

The most bizarre incident happened about 15 minutes into the first half or less.  As fhe game was stopped for a Maghery free around the right corner forward position, Maghery's wing half forward walked off the field - subbed as everyone on the line thought, but he wasn't limping/ visibibly injured. and didn't look annoyed in the slightest to be called ashore so early.
The Maghery number 18 jogged on, and straight down to hit the free, with his left, straight over the bar!

Then off the field he jogs, to high-fives all round, while the still-non-plussed half forward returns to his place on the park!

Never mind english football, this is American gird-iron, and not an eye-brow raised by any of the officials, despite, as you can imagine, a wee bit of clamour from the Killeavy team and followers. - Blood substitution apparently - but with no blood, and not even a pretense of injury - maybe nothing untoward actually did happen, and Dixie/ Maghery was playing within the rules??? but there is something wrong somewhere - amidst all the sour grapes

Great win by Killeavy over Granemore - even though it was expected by all accounts - Paul Watters scored the goal that eventually split the teams in the end.  Stansfield was not needed, thankfully, and Killeavy can hopefully build on this to go on another good run.  Happy heads round St Moninna's tonight.
