That was an incredible Everton team he managed. Sheedy, Mountfield, Rathcliffe, Southall, Heath and Sharp (and later with the addition of Lineker). Very unlucky to miss out on the treble in 1905. I think tiredness got to them in the end. Always wondered how they would have done in the European Cup the next season if not for the ban. They had the experience of winning the CWC behind them (and I think they neat Bayern in the semi i that year).

Always remember his comment after the defeat to Clare in the All Ireland replay.
"We will take our beating now like men and we will move on." Summed up the character of the man.

Fair play to Tipp. Munster needs them to break up the Cork / Kerry duopoly. I remember reading somewhere a few years ago that they had targeted a Senior football All-Ireland by 2020. Good on them to keep at it.

Not on youtube, but listened to this last Saturday on RTE Radio 1 on Sean Mannion (Boxer from Rosmuc, Galway). A great listen.

Completely agree. When Keane kicked the ball away yesterday in the dying moments, all I could think of was the drawn hurling final last year and why Cork did not try to kill the game with a similar tactic, instead of White dropping it wide that lead to O'Donovan's equalizer. You don't win 37 All Irelands without a bit of a mean streak. Good luck to them.

GAA Discussion / Jubilee celebrations gripe
September 08, 2014, 03:37:06 PM
I wish RTE / GAA would pay more attention to this part of the day's proceedings.
I always look forward to it but it seems to become less relevant with each passing year.  I really wanted to see the Tipp team from 1989 yesterday - grew up watching them in their battles with Cork and Galway in the mid to late 80s and aside from English, Ken Hogan and Leahy,  the rest seem to have disappeared from  public eye for the last 20 years. Found it hard to recognise anyone of them (for the brief moment that they were shown). Does anyone know who the small fellow with the glasses was? (he was I think the last one shown before the camera cut off)
They also shunt them off to the corner down by the Davin End. Bring them out into the centre of the field and have someone like Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh present hem. That, from my recollection was how they used to do it many years ago.
I might drop RTE and the GAA an email and tell them to get their act together considering the next three teams up are Cork!!

would anyone know who the RTE commentator was for most of the 80's finals? I think it was George Hamilton from 1986 onwards but I could be totally off. Was it Jimmy Magee pre 1986ish or did they carry the BBC commentary?

Remember the 81 final very vividly - was the first one I watched in it's entirety (Actually not as midway through the second half
of the replay the old lad dragged me away to go hunting a bull that had broken into a neighbour's herd of cows and got back to see replay of Gareth Crooks equalizer). Saw Villa's winner in all its glory though.

The match v Crystal Palace scares me more that the Chelsea one. Away in a hostile ground against a team that have won 5 in a row. That will could be the making of them.

Who was playing, what year  ?  1988 - Cork/Meath replay
Who did you go with ? The Uncle
Do you remember anything about it ? Sitting in old Cusack - half time went to bathroom to find hundreds of lads just piss*ng up against the wall - urine flowing all over the place.
