GAA Discussion / Re: Qualifiers Round 2
July 20, 2008, 07:28:48 PM
This evening's draw has thrown up some very interesting ties:

Donegal Vs Monaghan - Two very hit and miss sides as of late, can both be great on their day or equally bad, I reckon home advantage may just give Donegal the edge - HOME WIN

Tyrone Vs Westmeath - Tyrone are very rarely beaten in Healy Park and even though Westmeath are the only side to have given the Dubs a decent game so far in the Championship, I can't see them turning over a Tyrone side who are still more than capable of winning SAM this year - HOME WIN

Limerick Vs Kildare - Don't really know what to make of Limerick's win over a Meath side who really didn't seem interested in the Championship this year, I think if we're all honest, with the exception of Limerick fans, did we expect that result last night??? On the other hand, Kildare had a real close battle against Cavan and managed to come out on top. Again, home advantage may be vital here. HOME WIN

Laois Vs Down - Two teams who would have had aspirations of provincial glory this year. Laois were lucky against an average Wicklow side who couldn't' score a goal for love nor money. The flaws in the Laois side were exposed by Wexford but after their disaster today, were Wexford slightly overhyped??? Down on the other hand had two massive battles with Tyrone before eventually squeezing past them in extra time, but seemed somewhat in awe of Armagh in the Semi Final. Two teams with alot of potential and if they both perform it could be match of the round! HOME WIN

Whatever four sides are victorious next weekend certainly won't have it easy in Round 3. Kerry, Mayo, and Wexford already in the hat and should Fermanagh win the replay next weekend, adding Armagh into that draw really will make for some interesting Round 3 clashes

THE RACE FOR SAM BEGINS NOW!!! GOOD LUCK

Anyone know how many of the football qualifiers can be shown live??? As far as I know, TV3 have got first pick on the game they show but I'm not sure how many RTE can show. You would think that Monaghan/Derry will be live, hence the 3pm TI and then at least one of the 7pm matches, if not two!

All-Ireland SFC First-Round Qualifiers Draw

Limerick v Meath

Longford v Laois

Kildare v Cavan

Offaly v Down

Louth v Tyrone

Tipperary v Westmeath

Donegal v Roscommon

Monaghan v Derry

Very surprising that with the exception of Monaghan Vs Derry there aren't really any matches that stand out as ones that could go either way. Would expect Donegal, Westmeath, Tyrone, Down, Cavan, and Meath to win. The Longford/Laois and Monaghan/Derry matches could go either way imo. Anyone know how many of these matches will be shown live???

My apologies for that mistake and thanks for correcting me on that  ;) ;) ;)

Dubs have got their work cut out against Westmeath, level scores going into the second half, is there a shock on the cards???

Whoever drops out of todays semi final matches, there is massive potential for some cracking qualifier matches. As far as I'm aware the rules are pretty much the same as last year, teams who have already met cannot play each other again and teams coming out first are given home advantage as long as their ground is up to standard. So the teams in the draw tonight are as follows, if memory serves me correctly lol!!!

Tyrone, Derry, Donegal, Monaghan, Meath, Roscommon, Kildare, Tipp, Longford, Kildare, Cavan, Limerick, Laois, Louth, Offaly, plus the losers from todays two semi finals Westmeath/Dublin and Armagh/Down

What about this for a qualifier draw???

Tyrone Vs Derry
Meath Vs Westmeath/Dublin
Laois Vs Kildare
Cavan Vs Roscommon
Monaghan Vs Limerick
Donegal Vs Armagh/Down
Longford Vs Louth
Tipperary Vs Offaly

From a neutral point of view, were the unlikely to happen and both the Dubs and Armagh to lose today, that would make tonights draw even more interesting

Anyone know if the new deal to cover the GAA live this summer will have any effect on what games Setanta will show or even worse will Setanta still have the rights to show the Sunday game transmission on it's channels to subscribers like me in the UK??? Certainly hope not!!!

Just wondering if any of you know what the situation is regarding Setanta's coverage of the GAA this summer, ie the provincial championships and the All Ireland Series. For people like me in England, part of the attraction of subbin to Setanta was that we got to see the GAA over here, something that we never had before unless we went to the pub!!! So if anyone can shed any light on this matter, it would be great.

Here is the e-mail I recieved from Setanta:

Thank you for your e-mail.

We have had no confirmation of the GAA no longer going to be viewed on
Setanta.  When we have the relevant information we will inform our
customers.

If you have any further enquiries please do not hesitate to contact us
on 08712 00 33 22.

Yours sincerely

What makes me laugh is that i emailed the gaa before the first two qualifiers were played. The email was regarding which of this weekends matches wouold be on live, and the reply i got stated that contractually, RTE weren't allowed to show more than one match live on ANY given saturday, and that a decision would be made at a later date. Now, what logical reason is there for RTE to not show the Laois V Derry match live as they had planned to, as well as showing the two hurling qf's. They've done double headers from different grounds before so why not this time???

Fans that can't get to Breffni for the match are now gonna miss out. Had RTE stated at an earlier date that the match wouldn't be live, I'd say that the turnout at the ground would have been close to capacity, not saying that it won't be.

RTE are a joke, plain and simple

Dunno what's going on with setanta.com at the minute but if they're schedule is anything to go by, they aren't showing EITHER of the qualifiers live tomorrow, surely this must be a c**k up somewhere???

I'm kinda hoping that you's are right about it being Laois Vs Derry live next weekend. I've managed to get every weekend off work from now until the end of the championship but it would be a bit of a journey for me from london to kingspan breffni and it would cost a fair bit as well lol!!! The only thing is now that the hurling qf's being postponed until next saturday, we may not see any football live next weekend. Just like to pass on my sympathies to the mcgarry family and fair play to the gaa for having the sense to postpone the matches

RIP Vanessa and i think eveyone's thoughts are with their families at this time

So RTE have confirmed that they're showing Galway Vs Meath this saturday but have they confirmed which game they will be showing on the following saturday, as there's no mention of it on RTE or any other websites?
