Boxing, rugby, athletics world/European champions but don't give me the Irish soccer team as Ireland's greatest sporting achievement.

Ireland 1 England 1
Ireland 0 Egypt 0
Ireland 1 Holland 1
Ireland 0 Romania 0
Ireland 0 Italy 1

Fcuk me.

As Roddy Doyle memorably put it in 'The Van'

"we beat England 1 all, lost to Egypt nil nil and drew with Holland"

GAA Discussion / Re: AISF Aug 23rd Tyrone v Cork
August 20, 2009, 02:44:30 PM
I think this Cork team has been overhyped, they are still essentially the same players that have folded in major Croke Park occasions over the past few years, i don't think it will be any different this time tbh unless they get a blinding start and put Tyrone on the back foot. Other then that they will have to hope that Tyrone take the foot off the gas at some stage - as they have tended to do on occasion this year.

A comfortable win for Tyrone.

General discussion / Re: Ships that are tall

I wasn't commenting on the event in itself really, rather on the completely over the top commentary by the local TV stations on the importance of it and hyping up the numbers attending. I didn't run down the event nor did i mention freeing ireland. I'm perfectly entitled to juxtapose this with their coverage of any other event without some snotty c**t telling me what thread i should be posting in.

Was not in any way disrespecting George Bests memory rather the incredible hype which BBC & ITV generated about his funeral which turned out to be a damp squib.

Can't understand this shite at all. It seems to just be an excuse for Beeb and Utv to big up 'ar wee province' and make like Norn Iron is cosmopolitan. They were claiming that they were expecting a half million people to attend!!  Pile o' w**k.

The same oul bollocks was wheeled out at George Best's funeral with outrageous claims about the number that would be attending, of which about actually 10k turned up. Same for the NW 200 which has an annual attendance of 250k according to the local press. Laughable. The coverage by the 2 ni stations in relation to certain events stands in stark contrast to their treatment of GAA. SMS.

Thought that was a great game today, didn't think ther was too much to complain about either team's behaviour though it may have been different if you have been at  game as you can see much more of the off-the-ball stuff than you can on TV. You have to hand it to tyrone, when the chips were down at halftime they produced the goods, 6 points unanswered. It'll be a great game between them and Cork hopefully.

Gormley was good as was McMenamim and i thought Harte was good when attacking. Can't defend to save his life though. Same goes for Jordan, he was on the back foot today and was completely exposed. Kavanagh and Doyle were great for Kildare as was there midfield. Tyrone have serious problems here but the way they adapted in the 2nd half was impressive. O'Neill, Dooher, Penrose and Mulligan esp 2nd half were good also.

Kinneavy is a complete clown, in this and only in this is he consistent.

I'm sure British [as in people who live in Great Britain] republicans object to taking any oath to a monarchy. Equally i'm sure any British Catholic would not be overly happy with the present constitutional arrangements in Britain which bars them from taking certain posts because of their religion.

As you rightly point out the Irish constitution, which as you say, you don't live under, has a discriminatory clause which needs to be updated to reflect the make up of it's people which is increasingly secular.

Perhaps you might be better to try to change the constitution you live under first and when you are successful you can take the campaign international. With such a track record you are sure to prevail. I'm tempted to quote about motes and beams etc but since i'm sure you could hardly see the keyboard when you started the thread i'll not bother.

By the way nationalists and republicans are not seeking a United Ireland nor do we want 'NI joined with/taken over by the Republic' [your quote].

We are seeking a RE-UNITED Ireland!!  ;)

Watched a bit of the Beeb's coverage earlier, it was laughable the way when a paramilitary band went past the commentators started talking about something else. At one stage Monkstown YCV were passing and the commentator [it was either Clifford Smyth or Walter Love] started talking about them and when he went to name them he said 'Monkstown er ah um flute band'. It's a disgrace that a publicly-funded body can broadcast this and ignore what the essence of what 'orangefest' is  -  the UDA and UVF kick-the- pope bands, parading through our streets to lead an organisation that is dedicated to bigotry and sectarianism.

This was on the BBC national news today. Cringeworthy.

This should be on the WTF thread imo.

EG spot on with your observations as usual.

Perhaps though [in order to stop you descending into Fearonesque behaviour of opening multiple threads on a single theme] you should change the thread title to include ALL the modern-day parties who honour statues of Irish gunrunners who imported guns from Germany in order to undermine the government of the day and at a period when it was clear that a war was inevitable. Then again I suppose the Kaiser wasn't that bad an aul spud.

If you cannot follow my logic I'll give you a couple of clues. The statue in question sits on the driveway to Stormont. It wasn't unveiled by Sinn Fein.

Hafta agree with Maguire on this. Derry were played off the pitch that day but it was more that we were tactically outthought and not as motivated. Certainly a very disappointing day for derry but i didn't leave that match thinking Monaghan were a dirty team.

I think they are getting a worse press than they deserve this year, they've a couple of players who stray over the line, i know personally i wouldn't last 5 minutes with Dessie at his antics [i reckon i'd take him with me  ;D] but it's no big deal. Most teams have a couple of these. They can do whatever they want and i won't care as long as we win!

Anyway I bet Sat's game will be a blinding game of football! Doire abu.

The GAA should tell the GPA to go f**k themselves.

A number of points.

1. Do players not have to pay to become members of the GPA? If so, how does the GPA square the fact that they would have to pay fees to benefit from any GAA funded aid schemes (be that educational or health related). With any non-GPA member (but still inter-county player) not benefitting? The point I'm getting towards is the GPA's stance of pay up your fees or no help is forthcoming.

2. Who the f**k do they think they are demanding everyone else make sacrifices for them and them alone?

3. How much is Dessie Farrell on? And that weed Cusack. How much would they be siphoning off the top?

4. What part of "if you don't want to play or train, don't, no-one is forcing you to" do they not understand?

The next document the GAA send to the GAA should consist of thjese 2 lines!
