GAA Discussion / Re: Jack O'Connor Article
April 27, 2007, 10:33:00 AM
Didn't they ridicule Jack O'Connor for this article in the Tribune this weekend.

They pointed out how Dublin kicked far more times than Kerry did during O'Connor's tenure.
Pointing out that it was a bit rich him pointing the finger.
Even holding up the great Seamus Moynihan to illustrate their point. For one of the finals he made one kick pass for every 15 handpasses.

GAA Discussion / Speaking of grass roots!

If I were the GAA president I wouldn't get the groundsman to let the grass grow to ridiculous levels on All-Ireland hurling final day. This would allow both teams to play to the best of their abilities and not hinder the smaller, faster teams abilities.

Also I wouldn't wear a conspiratorial grin when presenting the cup.

But Jayo bounced the ball twice for the goal!  :-[

How can people let this go! It was only 12 years ago and already the records have dropped the asterisk next to the goal.

GAA Discussion / Re: Limerick introduce new tactic

Speaking of diving.... I thought it was interesting at the weekend that the referee gave a free against Mark Kerins for over carrying when he attempted a Klinsmann. I say fair dues to the ref for calling it correctly. Tipp ended up getting a goal from the free.
I hoped in that situation that his manager would hold his hands up and say it was a poor attempt at a dive and tell his player not to be diving (or at least diving that badly), instead Loughnane was complaining that he should have got a free. Dissapointed in that.

Just read the report in the Tribune.
Apparently the scoreline flattered us, with 3 of our points coming when the game was over  :-[

GAA Discussion / Cork team announced
March 07, 2007, 05:00:56 PM
Cork team announced:
CORK (SF v Dublin): P. O'Shea; E. Sexton, M. Shields, K. O'Connor; N. O'Leary, G. Spillane, A. Lynch; D. Kavanagh, N. Murphy; S. O'Brien, D. Hurley, K. McMahon; J. Masters, D. O'Connor, K. O'Sullivan.

Just the one change with Nicholas Murphy coming in for Alan O'Connor.

Hopefully they'll be able to maintain the form they showed against Tyrone.

'95 is only 12 years ago but these days would you ever see a corner back go up to a referee and plead the case for an opposing corner forward.

Grant me O'Lord a hurlers skill

With strength of arm and speed of limb

Unerring eye for the flying ball

and courage to match whate'er befall

May my stroke be speedy and my aim be true

My actions manly and my misses few;

No matter what way the game may go

May I rest in friendship with every foe

And when the final whistle for me has blown

And I stand at last before God's judgment throne,

May the great referee when he calls my name

Say, you hurled like a man, you played the game

Hiya Cusack,
As you say I seem to have got it wrong that Masters could not kick with his right.  :-\
I also doubted Kevin O'Sullivan and Dermot Hurley, both of whom were mentioned in the Tribune as playing really well.
Not only that but I wasn't giving Cork much chance of winning, not too mention handing out a hiding.

What chance Hurley and O'Sullivan making the chamnpionship team?

Surely Sexton will play as a half back swapping with Lynch?

I have my doubts about Hurley in midfield. For a big man he never seems to win much clean ball. Also he wouldn't be the most mobile of midfielders and might struggle against a team that plays the short passing game. Of course these views are based on a very limited viewing. Can any of the new Cork posters confirm this?

Oneill asked about the corner forwards... Were you not watching Cork's march to the McGrath cup/ Munster double last year? Masters likes to be handed the ball. Neither having the physique or the speed to win his own ball. When he gets it, if he is given an inch on his left he can swing it over from the right hand corner flag. Can not kick with the right. Entrusted with the free taking, he can have good days but 45s are outside his range.

Kevin O'Sullivan has been knocking on the door for a while now racking up scores for his club and the Cork juniors. He's big enough but seems to struggle at this level.

Masters isn't suspended. Same for Nicholas Murphy.
They got 2 yellows versus Donegal and were back on the pitch against Kerry.

Noel O'Leary was the only one to see the line against the kingdom.

Rumour has it that the triangle shape that passes for a GAA logo was made up for the same reason.
In the olden times a Celtic cross was good enough for a logo but money talks....

Hurling Discussion / Re: Hurling Thread
February 20, 2007, 05:01:10 PM
"Well Gerald McCarthy has the envitable task of getting to Cork boys ready for another go at liam. I would guess that we will see some new faces to try and freshen up the panel and team, that has been going along time together. Opened their account against Offaly with a decent victory."

envitable ? Do you mean enviable or inevitable? If you are saying enviable, I presume you are referring to the foundation of experienced hurlers he has. Still Kilkenny showed he has some problems to sort out. And the way he has started by moving his full back to full forward strikes me as a strange way to go.

So perhaps not enviable but inevitable   ;)

Pity to see him go alright.
He seems to have been around forever but was still on top of his game.
His hairstyle, even now, isn't one I'd copy.
The article in the tribune will be good motivation for waterford.

My main memories are as follows..

As a dominant full back for the football minors. Every attack seemed to founder on him. It was like he was playing the opposition single handed at times.

Dominating Pat Fox (?) in his debut season at senior. Being handed long range free duties in his first season. Narrowly missing out on a first all-ireland in a game where a few of those long range frees went astray.

Being tried at centre forward during the years when Cork were struggling and excelling there, in the league at least. (Can anyone tell me what year this was? circa 97?)

The build up to the 1999 final the speculation was about the key battle between Corcoran and Power. I'll always remember Corcoran catching the first ball over Powers head. I don't think Power got a puck that day.

Being shifted to corner back the following year as Offaly were getting an edge. (Can't remember was the problem that he just couldn't handle the size of Hanniffy or were Offaly just running the legs off him?) He certainly wasn't a corner back at that stage.

His reaction to Dinny Cahill's comments about him being washed up.

The goals against Waterford.

His point from the right corner against Kilkenny.

The amount of ball that he handled against Galway.
