Wasn't the old system that if you were div 1, you were senior, div 2 intermediate etc and if you got relegated from the league you dropped down to intermediate. It was a good system in that while the championship was still the most important, you had to do well in the league to stay in it.

Quotewithout doubting the talents of our current young player of the year he has an awful lot to learn about corner back play and it doesent matter how many attacks he sets up if he doesn't have the Skills of a corner back

I have to say I'd agree with that to some extent, a lot of our defenders spend too much time attacking and can be a bit prone when attacked by a good forward. Heany, Higgins and Gardiner are all great at attacking but seem to occassionally forget that their main job is to mind the house. While it's inspirational seeing Heaney scoring a point now and again, there aren't too many full backs who do it. Maybe he'll be better suited when he moves out to the 40.

Don't know why they couldn't have incorporated the two pitches, the regulations for soccer pitches is 100-130m in length and 50-100m wide while it's 130-145 and 80-90 for GAA pitches. Seems to me like one pitch properly designed would have been ideal.

I do think it's wrong for Rovers to get seemingly preferential treatment as regards tax write-offs and grants - tough shit if it was run by a shower of thieves - the club should have been allowed to go under the same as would happen to any small business and/or club.

However, it seems a bit late for the GAA to be taking this to court when the thing is half finished, they should have gotten involved a lot earlier.

QuoteInstead Mickey made the crucial and arrogant mistake of deciding '04 was not his affair, and as another wise man once said, those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

If Mayo had won the all-ireland that would have been a master stroke but as they lost it's a crucial flaw..........what a load of bollix. likewise with the whole hill 16 thing, if they had lost then that would have been the big mistake

Good win for Knockmore, hopefully a few of those lads can push on to the senior team and get us back to the top.............

Missing a few in the backs too, John Finn, Peter Butler, Peter Forde.........Pat Holmes just for his performance in 96 although i guess 97 took some of the gloss off that one

Good article from O'Mahony, I'm sure he realises the enormity of the job ahead.

Anybody hear yet when the first get-together with the players will be??

With Mayo at 16/1 for Sam and Galway at 6/1 for Liam, you'd get a return of a grand or so for a tenner on a double if they came in......

Would obviously be a long shot but both have top new experienced managers and neither are too far away from the top at the moment. You'd kinda expect both to come up a little short this year but it could be worth a punt nonetheless.........

As regards the double bounce question, I don't think the drop kick is a foul; a few years ago Liam MacHale did a couple of "basketball bounces" trying to get the ball under control i.e. not taking the ball into his hands while bouncing, and it was later discussed by the RTE "experts" as being legal.

Also, if you bounce the ball and are then tackled and drop the ball, this would be a free under that interpretation.

True, we were on the "easier" side of the draw but over the past 3 years, we have beaten Tyrone (best team in the country at the time) and Dublin (rightly or wrongly they were highly fancied) as well as Galway and Laois in the chapionship. Not to mention having beaten all of the top sides bar Armagh in the league (i know it's only the league but you still have to win the games).

So while we are a defender or two and a maybe a forward away from a complete side, i think that if the players around the middle of the park beef up a little and one or two lads come through, we can be a match for any team in the country within 3 years........i'd be confident enough to say that John O'Mahony won't leave the job as Mayo manager without having won an all-ireland

If it's an underage team you're coaching, one of the most basic skills in defending is simply knowing which foot your opponent kicks off (let's face it there aren't a huge amount of two-footed players around) thereby knowing which foot to block on and also trying to push him out on to his weaker foot.

Great news. Looks like a really good set up.

There will be a lot of pressure on the team to deliver now but I hope that we can be patient and give them the time and space to get things right. With the players we have and some of the U-21s from last year there is surely the talent there to finally win Sam. Hopefully this announcement will prolong the careers of any of the older heads that were contmeplating retirement.

Best of luck to them.........Roll on 2007

QuoteIt is also possible to fist the ball with the same hand the ball was in, also as long as there is a clear striking action.

Is that true?? I remember being taught that it had to be a two-handed operation

GAA Discussion / Re: Joyce and Donnellan Retire

Two great players alright, looks like only Donnellan has retired though and I'd say he might be back yet.

Maybe they can both make comebacks when galway hit the first round of the qualifiers next may.................

Would be a good line up alright. The post on mayofans wasn't exactly from an iron cast source but the poster there isn't one known for talking sh*te so probably on the mark.

Will be interesting to see how he gets on. Personally I think we need to give them time (3 years minimum) if they are to achieve the ultimate goal. It's very hard to change things like physique overnight but at least both O'Mahoney and Lyons have All-Ireland winning experience and as far as I know they're not carrying any baggage relating to any particular clubs/players.

Best of luck to them, roll on Championship '07 and to Pearse stadium.............
