ya im thinking it does smack of desperation. bar the lads who have already been on the panel and development squad its too late for the rest. unless the club player in question is exceptionally talented, driven and determined i couldnt see how the step-up could be made in mid summer. nigh on impossible me thinks. itll probablky take a couple of years for the weights to kick in with the younger lads but the drive and passion missing in salthill, well thats attitude and im no psycologist so i dunno how that would be got back, but if it is then it can make up for a lack in physical strength.

however if you have 2-3 years good weight training under your belt,  you would probably have more confidence to throw yourself into 50-50 situations and maybe with that confidence could come agression ala the dubs and meath the last day.

see d brady has considerably beefed up these days and he seems more aggressive for the last couple of years then previous years. many of the lads could follow his example.

well that a totally incoherent post, sorry about that!

clearly "minutes" is a typo.

but there are some refs in mayo who the typo could apply to! ;D having said that id never be a ref. a dirty job although they do get paid per match. paltry figure like €40 or something. the only ones in the grassroots to be offically receiving anything!

GAA Discussion / referee's fitness

just saw this in the paper

"Their training includes a physical fitness test. Each must complete 3,200 metres(eight laps of the track) in less than 14 minutes. He must also cover a 45-metre dash in less than seven minutes and a 200-metre dash in under 32 minutes. These are conducted annually at four or five different venues and reaching the targets is mandatory."

jayaus with targets like that il never become a referee!

GAA Discussion / Re: Square Ball.....
June 05, 2007, 03:26:54 PM
as far as i know, (if one of kevin mcstays columns in the mayo news is to be believed), its the ref's call for a square ball, the umpire has no right to call it, but you will often see the umpire help the ref to make up his mind. he in fact has no right to do this. the ref must make the call despite the fact that he may be 50 yards away when forced to make the call.

its simple rule. the umpires should call it, they are on the spot. no need for video replays or the likes.

Did anyone see the Meath fan on the Hill with the 1/2 bottle of vodka?
The camera man wasnt long changing the shot when he realised what it was :D

indeed i did, split my sides laughing! i remember when younger being afraid to smoke in the hill or old canal in case the cameras caught it and the mammy saw it on the box!

in fairness it was a wet miserable day. maybe he needed it to warm his cockles!

pretty good game alright lads.

geraghty should be suspended for his antics. dublin paniced in the last few minutes. wild kicks at goal a few times but entertaining fare none the less.

what was the deal with the 4000 emty seats? did the rain scare people off? did they stay in quinns?

anyone at moy davitts burrishoole?

bit of an unexpected result? tho i hear the great colm mc swung things in the end?

is it true? (sorry im abroad!)

ah if it is then mayo are screwed. do the honorable thing johno - resign the dail seat!  ;) the way things r shaping tho i dont think he'll be tainiste!

what would be better for mayo, an all-ireland win or a taoseach and tainiste from mayo?

i know what id take.

it may be a blessing in disguise.

johno now wont be elected and will give his attention to mayo. clearly he didnt over the last few weeks.

having sent out teams during the league with kilcullen, kilcoyne, AOM, Campbell et al all doing fairly well, he reverted to the 'dublin' setup!

strikes me as if he doesnt have faith in the younger players. heaney was flying out the fieldn early season, oh i know il put him full-back again! heaney even said it himself in the paper tha he doesnt like to play there.

im not going the second guess the messiah, but some of the selection and positional decisions are questionable. (i know i just contradicted myself! :P)

in fairness the loss of Bary moran, mc Garrity, T mort, McDanger is massive, i feel, the wrong people were in the wrong places.

heaney might have been left at mid-field with Harte. leave kilcullen in FB with K Higgins and O'Malley either side of him. A higgins and devenny either side of nallen. nallen probably would have managed at CHB and maybe use Billie Joe in the 'Colm McManeman' role of break winner round the middle. he did this well last year. also with T mort on the 45 there wold be a bit of beef round there. let dillon float with kilcoyne and leave c mort and a moran inside.

well thats my tuppence worth. im glad im not in johno's shoes. its a bloody hard job to keep the people of mayo happy!

you can still get all the big soccer matches through 'rojadirecta' using a sopcast on broadband.

just checked all my settings made them as green as possible and im getting nothing from rte.

ah well!

I know about Sopcast, PPMate, PPLive and so on. I generally watch ESPN Asia/HK or Star Sports' English language premiership coverage through those programmes, which are compiled on MyP2P.eu.

What I was talking about was that Setanta's coverage was also available through that site and those programmes late last summer, but it was pulled within two weeks of the start of the season. Is Setanta's coverage still available on "rojadirecta"?

ah right, sorry my mistake. no i dont think setanta is available through rojadirecta

Galway just seemed hungrier for it on the day and kept knocking back Mayo players in the tackle.

ya hungrier by far.
tis a bit sickening to concede a goal so easily so early in another big game.

i wonder are any lessons being learned in the mayo defence at all?

lord only knows who we will get in the lottery!

seems ye'll be in the quarters now fairly handy. deserved the win no doubt about it.
