To quote Roy Keane in a recent interview :
Quote"Once a fella can pass the bloody ball we're looking for character."

Sadly that character was found wanting in a couple of the Utd. lads last night. I think they badly missed the likes of Neville to give a bit of leadership and drive. Also thought the way the team was set out tactically was not up to scratch either. For me at this stage it's long been established that Rooney needs a striker to play off up front, his tendency to come deep means he's not ideal to lead the line. Against a side like Milan you've got to give your players the best chance to shine, so play them in the appropriate position, i.e. Giggs on the left, Ronaldo on the right. What was Fletcher doing out there? Contributed very little. Should have played Smith, I think himself and Rooney are a great combination. Anyway enough of the woulda shoulda coulda stuff. Will be sorry not to see Utd. in Athens, was looking forward to the crack with my Man U mates over there. Still the chance of a double though, it's not all bad.

If Micah Richards has what Gary Neville has when he's 31 he'll have done pretty well for himself.

Touché!!!

Nice one, and very true also, even if I'm not a fan of the Neville sisters.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_feather

QuoteThe single White feather as a symbol of cowardice comes from cockfighting and the belief that a cockerel sporting a white feather in its tail is likely to be a poor fighter. Pure-breed gamecocks don't show white feathers, so its presence indicates that the cockerel is an inferior cross-breed.

The symbol is particularly recognised within the British army and in countries associated with the British Empire since the 18th century.

Looking at the where this phrase came from it's not one I'd use. Ideas of pure breeds etc. coming from so called aristocrats? If they mean inbreeding...

QuoteI think you misunderstand. The problem is that Harry won't accept a desk job, or a posting to e.g. Cyprus, or even a stint in the safest bunker the army can find in Iraq.

No I don't really EG, hence why I said what a life. Even if the guy genuinely wants to he can't go to Iraq, it simply wouldn't be tolerated that he be put in harms way, and in effect he actually would become a danger to his own men. Niether will it be tolerated that he resign his commission, for publicity reasons. So he will be convinvced to limp along for the period of his enlistment, and bow out gracefully I imagine? Later on he'll get the honoury generalship, like his old man and the rest of the clan.

Saw this story and had some laugh at it. I mean in fairness, what's the point of a soldier who can in no circumstances can be put in harms way? Is that not the point of the job on some level? This would have to engender animosity in his fellow troops, they can be sent to Iraq to face possible death or maiming, but a guy getting paid to do the same job can't be? And if Iraq was completely pacified could he be sent? Unlikely, as he is still a kidnap target. In fact he isn't safe in any theatre of war, his regiment are in fact his bodyguards. He really has no place serving as a soldier in that case. But I guess we always knew it was really a sham anyway. Now doubt he'll be made an honoury general and commander of a regiment instead, promote him out of harms way. What a life.

Like KM Litbarski Addias, although I think I might have had a really bad pair of tesco type efforts just before that....

Supersarsfields, the whole comment wasn't aimed at you, apologies if it seemed that way, obviously you did condemn the Munich comments. It was more a carry over from the previous threads about "funny" songs and some of the carry on with regard to both Utd. and the 'Pool on here over recent weeks.

I'm sure many similar stories can be picked out about incidents in other cities. The point of this story, and plenty of others, was people being singled out because of their Irishness. I'm a supporter too, and enjoy a bit of p!sstaking with my friends who support rival clubs, but there's a limit to it, and for me that's where people start living and dying, it's only a game at the end of the day. Also personally I stopped talking about "we" years ago, when it was made obvious "we" weren't really wanted - "we" are just "woollybacks" after all.

What I find completely laughable about it all is this "we" sh!t. Any of you would be likely to get a good box in the mouth on the strength of your accent alone in most of these North England cesspits. Grow the fcuk up.

And I laugh at people who complain about people who support a club refering to them as "we". Why the hell wouldn't I say we?
And as for the second part I've been over to liverpool many a time and never once received a " Good box in the month" due to my accent. Nor any of my mates.

a good oul riot never harmed anyone....oh wait, i forgot about Hysel!

And as for Slim, you were ( Rightly) complaining about Liverpool fans signing about Munich or about Smith and you come out with this crap. That's the bit I was on about glass houses, and you prove the point for me!!

Count yourself lucky then, I can relate many stories of my own and others expericnes of both Liverpool and Manchester, I've been attending spoorting events in both cities for over 15 years, but this recent beauty will suffice:

Group of Irish women on a hen night. Note I use women, not girls, these were mostly married and in their late 30s. At the end of a very eventful night, and not in a good way, they are queueing for a taxi back to their hotel. Just as they are about to get their cab 3 lads jump the queue ahead of them. One of the women, foolishly, sits into the front seat of the cab, and points out it's theirs. "Fcuk off out of it you Fenian whore" was used among other phrases. One of our heroes then proceeds to grab the woman by the back of the hair and belt, throws her from the cab, and then stands on her whilst asking do any of the other "Irish bitches" want to argue with him about it. Oh, did I neglect to mention the woman was also pregnant? I'll leave out the club of the jersey the guy was wearing, as it's irrelevant to the story. My point is the hardcore of the people who live in these cities don't give a fiddler's fcuk about you, you are not part of their "we", and you can see that on any of their discussions boards when Irish subjects are brought up. Then to come on here bandying insults and scoring points about events most of you know next to nothing about, and where real people died? Pathetic. I'm betting some of you aren't even old enough to actually have witnessed Heysel, maybe not even Hillborough? Well after those I could never try and take the hand about Munich etc.

One thread, "funny" footie songs, was already terminated on the back of this crap, but some people don't want to play nice.

What I find completely laughable about it all is this "we" sh!t. Any of you would be likely to get a good box in the mouth on the strength of your accent alone in most of these North England cesspits. Grow the fcuk up.

General discussion / Re: Shamrock Rovers Ultras

Not really interested in getting into the in's and out of Thomas Davis vs Shamrock Rovers, but the issue of the amount of space left behind the goals is a load of balls in my opinion. How many clubs in Europe play in municiple stadiums that incorporate running tracks? Having been to a number of games in such grounds I can't say it effected the atmosphere. You'd have to ask the players how they felt about it, but I imagine been out of range of missles isn't something they regret. For instance one club I'm very familiar with is DIF in Stockholm Sweden. They have been league champions 3 times in the last 5/6 years and play in Stockholms Olympic Stadium, built for the 1912 Olympics, incorporating a running track. Hasn't done them any harm, excellent atmosphere, successful. In support terms they are bigger than Shamrock Rovers in a comparable league, but success and the qua;ity of the entertainment brings fans as ever.

Hope he's turning a corner, good on him for sticking with it. Some of the "highlight" segments from the end of last season of games involving Carlton were truely horrific viewing from his point of view. Then again I imagine, like our own games, they can be very unfair - if the guys up the pitch aren't doing their jobs you as the last line of defense are always going to look like you gota roasting.

Rufus' directions are spot on. Been up a few times, trying different routes, and that is the best from Leenane. Excellent pics Mayo4Sam, spectacular views from up there alright, out to sea and down to the lake. Unfortunately never really got a clear day for it, they are fairly rare around there. Whatever you do Venter don't attempt to take her head on from Delphi, can be tempting, but it gets very steep, and turns more into climbing than hillwalking at that point - learned this to my peril one day, with a numbnuts of a "friend" leading the charge. Was fair tired by the end of that day I can tell ya! :)

Most clubs didn't have the political clout to get the rules bent for them to sign him.

Well as Rafa said "The rules are the rules. The law is another thing". Your right, UEFA/FIFA would only take one of the 18 or so major European clubs seriously in that regard, in that it wouldn't just be sabre rattling, they actual would launch a case in the EU wrt to labour laws etc. Look what happened with Cork City for example of the dual standards applied. The last thing they want is another Bosman case, which might invalidate their "rules", and weaken their control further. I think such a case is inevitable in any event.
