VICTIMS' campaigner Willie Frazer will take part in a live webchat with News Letter readers on Wednesday.

The Co Armagh man, who lost his father and several other relations and friends to IRA gunmen during the Troubles, will answer readers' questions between 12.30pm and 1.30pm on Wednesday.

Mr Frazer is part of the Ulster People's Forum and in November last year confirmed he would run in the Westminster by-election for Mid Ulster.

Speaking at the time he said: "I intend to highlight the mismanagement of unionist politics by our current political representatives. I believe we have a number of MPs that are wasting the opportunity to represent the Protestant people on a national level."

GAA Discussion / Your Club Name
January 27, 2013, 10:21:16 AM
I came up with this idea after reading Stew's piece about asking for advice in naming a club in North America.  It would be great to have a thread which dedicates itself to the name of GAA clubs throughout he world; it can act as a vault of knowledge and can be always be updated. So simply name your club and where it is located and a short piece about why the club was named so.

Ill start it off.

1. Steelstown Brian Óg's GFC - Derry

In 2008 young Steelstown star Brian Óg Mckeever was diagnosed with cancer and later lost his battle with it. Brian Óg represented Derry under 15′s and under 16′s and was called into the Derry minor team before having to pull out due to illness. He captained the Steelstown teams up to minor level. Brian Óg had a huge influence upon every one who knew him. Steelstown decided to rename the club in honour of the committed footballer to Steelstown Brian Óg's GAC. Steelstown also retired the number 5 jersey in his honour

General discussion / Danske bank - a disgrace.
January 25, 2013, 08:13:14 PM
The following story is a disgrace. Incidently in the bank of ireland bank in spencer road in the waterside of derry there is a sign saying

' this branch is not suitablefor wheelchair users'     . Disgrace.

A disabled man was forced to make lodgements outside a bank because it does not have disabled access.

Michael Holden had to conduct his business in the rain outside the Danske Bank branch in Maghera, County Londonderry, as it does not have access for wheelchairs.

Two staff from the bank assisted him on the street with one holding an umbrella to stop him getting wet.

Mr Holden said the incident left him feeling "embarrassed and humiliated."

'Drenched'

Speaking to BBC Radio Ulster's Evening Extra programme Mr Holden from Saintfield, County Down, said while he was in Maghera he had to make some lodgements at the bank.

"I parked as close as I could to the branch and wheeled myself up to the branch," he said.

"It was pouring with rain and there was no obvious sign of disabled access, so I wheeled myself up and down the length of the branch and couldn't find a way in so I had to bang on the windows," he said.

Some of the customers in the bank saw Mr Holden and alerted staff to his presence.

He said: "One of the staff came dashing out and asked if she could help me, I said 'yes' I wanted to make a lodgement. She said 'I'm very sorry, there's no way in, we will have to transact your business here in the street'.

"I said 'you're kidding me' and she said 'no' and told me that the staff had complained to head office but that nothing had been done.

"I said that if that was the only way then that's what we would have to do."

The staff member then arranged for a colleague to come out and hold an umbrella over Mr Holden while he made the transaction.

"The staff were embarrassed and they apologised so many times. I was embarrassed for them as well as myself, people were walking past and looking at what was going on," he added.

"I was terribly embarrassed, it's humiliating. I was drenched to the skin. To think in the modern age that a disabled person can't get access to a high street service is just unbelievable."

Mr Holden is also not able to enter his local Danske Bank branch in Saintfield as it also does not have disabled access.

The Equality Commission for Northern Ireland has confirmed that Mr Holden has been in touch with them and they are aware of the issue.

Danske Bank have said: "We are committed to improving the accessibility of our branches for wheelchair users and, following works in recent years, the vast majority of our branches and head office locations are already DDA compliant.

"The work required to make each location wheelchair accessible varies according to the individual physical premises and street access and in some cases planning permission is required.

"In Saintfield we now have a temporary ramp, with a view to carrying out further alterations in the coming months. In Maghera, significant works are required to achieve DDA compliance and this work is currently being scoped out."

GAA Discussion / USFC - 2/6/27 - Derry v Down
January 09, 2013, 05:33:24 PM
Might as well get the first championship game thread up and running.............................

The GAA's Ulster Council has been urged to rethink Derry's Championship clash with Down amid fears of traffic chaos.

The match is to take place on June 2 - the same day as the Walled city marathon which will see Foyle Road, a section of Lonemoor Road and the lower deck of the Craigavon Bridge closed as around 1,200 runners take to the streets. Upwards of 15,000 spectators are expected to attend the Celtic Park clash, prompting fears that many fans will be caught up in traffic gridlock in the city.

A spokesman for the Ulster Council told the Journal that it was "aware" of the matter and that a final decision will be made on January 17 at a meeting of the Competitions Control Committee. He said that a venue change would not a be possibility but that a date or time change was being considered to avoid the clash. However, the TV schedule has already been agreed and the decision may depend on that.

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan, who plans to run the marathon, has called on the Ulster Council to address the concerns. "The clash with the Championship match is unfortunate as the huge additional volume of traffic that it will generate is sure to create headaches for runners, marshals, police and Roads Service.

"It will also be difficult for matchgoers to find parking spaces.

"These are concerns I will be raising with the Ulster Council.

"I would like to think that common sense can prevail and the Derry v Down match can be played on a different date or even the throw-in be put back by a couple of hours."

Meanwhile, the marathon organisers have reopened the event for new entries having filled the initial limit of 1,000 places.

Race Director Noel McMonagle said: "It's great news for any runners out there who thought the gate was firmly shut. Despite reaching the original entry target last week, the significant ongoing demand has persuaded the event organisers to offer a small number of additional places for the eagerly anticipated City of Culture event."

Limited additional entries will now be accepted on a first come first served basis until Friday at 4pm via www.athleticsni.org or at Foyle Hospice, 61 Culmore Road.

AC Milan friendly called off after racist chanting
A friendly between AC Milan and Italian lower division club Pro Patria was suspended after players walked off because of racist chants.

Milan's Kevin-Prince Boateng picked up the ball 25 minutes into the first half and kicked it into the crowd.

Ghana international Boateng then removed his shirt and was followed from Pro Patria's home pitch by both sets of players and officials.

There had been appeals for the abuse to stop from the public address announcer.

On his way from the pitch, Boateng applauded sections of the crowd, who then reacted angrily towards the corner of the ground from which the chants came.

It was quickly established that play would not restart and AC Milan's official website said other black players in the Milan side - M'Baye Niang, Urby Emanuelson and Sulley Muntari - suffered abuse.

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri told reporters: "We are disappointed and saddened by what has happened.

"Milan play for the right to respect all players. We need to stop these uncivilised gestures.

"We are sorry for all the other fans who came here for a beautiful day of sport. We promise to return, and we are sorry for the club and players of Pro Patria, but we could not make any other decision.

"I hope it can be an important signal."

Milan's organising director Umberto Gandini added: "It is so sad but we had to give a strong signal. Very proud of all Milan players for their decision. No other comments."

GAA Discussion / Ulster Colleges - Treated Fairly?
December 06, 2012, 07:10:18 PM
Now that county teams have the first say over their university players in the forthcoming McKenna Cup - Are there any point in them taking place in this uni competition. I have sympathies with McGrath and O'Rourke here.

Whats the point in going in with a limited squad against an inter-county team? It would be hard enough with a full squad as it is.

Sigerson is around the corner, why play 8/9 boys who you know will not be in your plans once the competition comes along?

What are big beatings going to do for morale?

I feel that certain county managers are being selfish, let the unis have them for the next month and if you think the player (s) is good enough then keep him in the squad for the NFL.

December 05, 2012, 08:11:53 PM
Just reading the text there, seems that aidan walsh has been excluded from representing his uni due to him doing two courses this year. This has been implemented by the the gaa higher education board.

How on earth can this be beneficial for unis? Why is such a rule enforced? It's got me!!

GAA Discussion / 'Pointless' GAA game
October 19, 2012, 03:31:18 PM
Bored as hell here in lecture here so gonna tell ye about my game.

Based on the show Pointless on BBC1 this involves naming clubs from counties. For example saying the county in question is derry and there are 3 people playing each person has to name a club in the county like so

...... Jimmy: steelstown
      Sinead: swatragh
      Sean: bellaghy

After sean answers it goes back to jimmy and so on. You have 10 seconds to give an answer or your out and you can not name the same club twice or you out too. The last person stamding wins.

Just beat a tyrone man there in the game and the county in question was........ Tyrone
