Sunday ban expected to be lifted

The ban on Sunday football in Northern Ireland is likely to be lifted at an extraordinary general meeting of the Irish FA on Wednesday night.
IFA members voted 69 to 28 in favour of ending the ban last year, short of the 75% required to bring in a change.

Chief executive Howard Wells supports the abolition of the Sabbath ruling.

Reducing the Executive Committee of the IFA from 18 members to 10 and changes to other committees will also be on the agenda at the meeting.

The IFA is the only national association within Uefa to have a Sunday ban in place.

The sport's governing body in Northern Ireland wants to add the wording: "The association is neutral in matters of politics and religion and prohibits any kind of unlawful discrimination" to its articles.

Sinn Fein in Christmas tree row

A community group has objected to a Sinn Fein deputy mayor turning on Armagh city's Christmas tree lights.
The party's leader on the council said she was shocked to hear that the group has refused to allow councillor Noel Sheridan to carry out the function.

He has offered to meet the community group to discuss the issue.

Councillor Cathy Rafferty said Sinn Fein was informed by council officials that members of the group had objected to the deputy mayor's role.

"I am appalled at this development. It is a direct insult on the office of deputy mayor and on this council area, and I would expect all councillors from across the political divide to share my indignation," she said.

"This type of behaviour has to be challenged, unfortunately there still seem to be some who refuse to recognise the new political dispensation."

Mr Sheridan said he had been due to switch on the lights because the mayor was not available.

A community group objected to the SF member switching lights on

"As deputy mayor, I have at all times ensured that the integrity of the position has never been compromised," he said.

"I respect the office and the responsibility that the position places on me. Unfortunately there obviously those who are not prepared to do the same," he said.

A spokeswoman for the council said it did not wish to make any comment before it had seen Sinn Fein's statement on the issue.

"I want to leave Chelsea. Nothing can stop me from leaving now. Something is broken with Chelsea. The damage in the dressing room is big because we know now what happened and who caused Mourinho's departure. I know that Ronaldinho and Kaka are linked to come next season but even that won't change my mind."

Army admits 'not defeating IRA'

The Army has admitted for the first time that it did not win the war against the IRA.
The admission is contained in an internal document released by the Ministry of Defence after a request under the Freedom of Information Act.

The Army also admitted mistakes were made on Bloody Sunday, but only in how it deployed its vehicles.

The 100 page document analyses in detail the British army's role in Northern Ireland over 37 years.

It focuses on specific operations as well as providing an overview of its performance.

The document, obtained by the Pat Finucane Centre, points to a number of mistakes, including internment and highlights what lessons have been learnt.

It describes the IRA as "a professional, dedicated, highly skilled and resilient force", while loyalist paramilitaries and other republican groups are described as "little more than a collection of gangsters".

The Army admits mistakes over Bloody Sunday - but only in how it used vehicles during the arrest operation.

It concedes for the first time that it did not win the battle against the IRA - but claims to have "shown the IRA that it could not achieve its ends through violence".

In a statement, the Pat Finucane Centre - a human rights group - said the document "betrays a profoundly colonial mindset towards the conflict here and those involved in it".

"Loyalist violence and the links between loyalist paramilitaries and the state has been airbrushed out of this military history," it said.

The dup have been telling us lies this last few years it seems  ;)
